Congress wants to increase the federal gas tax $0.05 to $0.10 per gallon to pay for new bridges. My suggestion would be to remove all projects that are not building or maintaining the highway system and make them a user fee like the highways. This would remove Bike Trails, Walking paths, hiking trails, horse trails, and related shelters. It would also remove all mass transit aid and make the uses of those services pay for them and not the driving public. ATV and Snowmobile trails would still be covered because they pay the tax when the fill up.

Look there is a dirty secret about the gas tax. It is more than what is needed to maintain the roads and build bridges. That account is in surplus. So, what is the problem? Gas tax revenue can not be used for any other purpose than transportation, so they put the surplus in a special account and spend the interest it earns as they please as a part of the general fund. I learned this while an independent trucker when Senator Dole wanted to increase numerous taxes on truckers, to include fuel. This caused the AMERICAN TRUCKING ASSOCIATION to research the tax. One of the things that came out is the gax tax collects more money than needed to maintain the highway system, but the surplus by law can not be spent on anything else, hence the convoluted account the surplus goes into.

Dwight D. Eisenhower the father of the Interstate Highway System did it with 4 cents a gallon tax on gas, and that was back when gas was about 20 cents a gallon. Now gas is at 4 dollars and their 18.8 cents is not good enough for them. It has nothing to do with bridges because the Federal government has enough money to repair all the bridges, it has to do with increasing the price of gas. More you have to pay for something less you can us it. Using that very simple logic the federal government will actual get less money make because less gas will be bought. Some in Congress want to mirror Europe which has very high prices on their "petro" because of taxes. This forces people to live in cities and take mass transportation. Under mass transit the government can control you. You can only go were the government will let you.
