Entrance Examinations on schools...

Hi everyone! :D First of all, I am not trying to offend anyone in the educational field or pinpointing any educational institution. This is only my insight. Just thought about this recently: Schools have entrance examinations for new enrollees. What is the true purpose of these examinations? Of course, the initial thing that comes to mind is that schools do this because they want to find the intelligent students to have them study in their institution, gauge a student's abilities, or try to limit numbers of students. But what if the sole purpose of entrance examinations is to try to select the intelligent students and not to accept those who did not pass the exam? Then isn't it contradictory to what a school should be? Schools are supposed to educate yet they choose only those who pass the exams, who by the way are actually easier to teach. A great educational institution does not choose students depending on their academic abilities. They can educate any type of student. Then it would just be up to them to let those who perform well graduate from their institution. Opinions? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts and insights. :)

That's a good point. It does make sense on some big universities that they accept on those who pass their entrance examinations. I could just speculate but I think they are just all about the money. Most likely, they'd think that if they accept real good students, it may give their school recognition in the future. It is really unfair for those who really wanted to learn but they can't. There are others schools who aren't particular with entrance examinations. The tests usually comprise of high school subjects just to test whether they're ready for college or not.

Really? That's too bad. He might have a hard time dealing with work. He could just be very stressed and nervous at that time but under such conditions, crab and wrestling are pretty common words. He must be a special one. It may not be too late for him to learn. Let's just hope he steps up after realizing he needs improvement.

Good point. Education is truly for everyone and if an institution intentionally does not do it, then they don't deserve to be called an educational institution, or even a school. By the way, I just saw a contestant on a local variety show. He just graduated college. Man, I don't know if he's too pressured or there's something really gravely wrong with the educational system. When asked to spell wrestling, he wasn't able to do so. He said "w-r-a-s-l-i-n-g". Much worse, he can't even spell crab!!! He started with "c-a-r-b", then changed it to "c-r-u-b" when asked to. No offense to that person, it's just the truth. He may be too stressed out but spelling the word crab is just plain and simple.

Well, most of the school that I known that is having an entrance exams are those in the private schools.. They are very strict about choosing those students who can enroll in their school.. The reason of this is because they want to maintain and improve the name of their schools and the achievements that they get... I am agree with you that schools must educated students and not choosing only those intelligent students but no matter what we say that is how they view about education... For them, they just think the reputation of the schools and not the service that they give to those people who would like to study in their schools.. But for those some public schools/ government schools, they used the entrance exam to know the abilities of the students so that they can rank them according to the students ability.. If the student got a high percentage in the exam then automatic she/he will be in the star section or the first section.. I don't believe that schools need to do this kind of policy because it is bias.. I know that only first or star sections have the best teaching given by the school but for those who are in lower sections they were not treated the same as in the star section.. There is really have a bias.. So, I think the educational institution I think don't do exactly what they need to do to have a good education to all students...

Thanks for your insights! :D I also dislike that star section system. Good thing our school does not implement that. I've studied in one school from kinder to college. Since our college course was new to the school, they tried to implement the star section system for the two sections. It feels nice to be on the better group but I feel that it degrades those who are on the other section. The intention of the college may be to gauge the learning abilities of the students so they can teach us according to our comprehension and needs. But still, I think that system unintentionally does some damage to the student's self-esteem.

Schools are also concerned about money. If you take in a student who can't make it you are spending money with out getting a return. Exams also serve to limit the pool of candidates. If you have to select 400 ou of 10,000 you give an exam to determine who has the bes chance of being successful.

Well if an academic situation is too far above a students head they are not going to suceed. They are just going to end up frustated and really turned off to education. I think if they are close to passing they can get tutoring and take the test again. They have to know what they are dealing with and have to understand the concepts being presented to them. People have to have an ability to comprehend to get into a good college.
