This happened to me last year Cinders. I was waiting behind to men who were getting very agitated with the machine and eventually left grumbling abut the fact that it hadn't given out the money that one of them expected. Anyway, when I got to the machine there was £50 sticking out. I took it and took my own money and then went down to the newsagent where I had seen them go to. I went in and asked the bloke that I had seen at the machine how much he thought that he'd lost. he looked at me a little quizzically but said "£50". I gave it to him. he thanked me and as he took his wallet out I saw that he was wearing a police officer's uniform under his coat. I was very pleased that I had been honest!!

Under jacket Cinders. Not under cover. LOL. I cannot stand deliberate dishonesty. If I hadn't found him I would have taken the money into the bank and referred them to the transaction before mine. Returning the money of course.

I bet in the end you were so grateful you had been honest. Just shows that you never know who is in front of you when you are at the bank or cash machine. He may have been under cover or something!!

We've heard about so many ATM scams. This would have scared me away completely. Please check with your bank to make sure you're not a victime of identity theft, please. If there's anything out of the ordinary, don't use that machine for anything!!! I guess you can tell, I went through all sorts of torture to straighten things out after my identity was stolen!

I will check my bank regularly. Thats one reason why I didnt withdraw any money!! I would have felt bad if I took the money, I would have gone to the bank on Monday and explained to them!!! I would hate to be part of an identity theft!!

The problem is that the card went into the machine. If a hoax was happening, they have your info! Please don't put off checking yur account, and alert the bank manager to what happened so they can check the surveillance tape before it's erased. Why not help to protect others? Good luck! I really hope it was just a glitch, not a theft.

I would have been a little more quick at the draw and got the money lol! No but seriously, I would have left it alone. Most ATMs are designed to take the money back into the machine if someone leaves it there, and the money is put back into the account. You never know if that was someone's rent money, or their last in the world. I couldn't live with myself knowing that could be a possibility, so I would have let the money go back into the machine. But if it was on the ground I'd consider it fair game!!!

Thanks for your response. I was too shocked to have grabbed the money but agree with you, I wouldnt have been comfortable taking it. If it was on the floor then its finders keepers as its harder to prove whose it was!!

I can't really say I would take it off the ground either. There is one time that I saw someone drop their money below their seat at the bar. I sat there for the longest. Here I was broke as I don't know what, on my mama tab, and here he is dropping money. In the midst of my buzz I decided to take it. I got all the way over with all intention to make my pocket that ten dollar bill's new residence, but by the time I put my hands to it, knowing I saw this man drop it, I knew I couldn't keep it. I arose, bill in hand, and told the guy that he had dropped the money. On the bright side he did buy me a drink lol!

I don't think there's much that can be done since the machine sucked back in the cash anyways. I would have wanted the money and be hitting myself that I didn't grab it faster.

It has happened to me, and I had to chase the dear little man down the street to give it back to him. Bless he had left his money in it. I must have given him a fright and a half cos I had my little girl in a pram then and I went thundering along the high street after him!

I didnt see anyone walk away from the machine, a bloke got into his car and some people were walking past the shops, so i couldnt be sure who had just used the machine plus I was shocked that someone had obviously walked off without taking their money!!! I was confused!! I bet he had a fright but glad in the end how you had been so honest!!

I've got one better. When I lived in Alb, NM. I went to an ATM. When I pulled up somebody had left their card in the machine, it said on the screen, "Do you want another transaction." I pushed the "No" button and out came their card. It was military and I called the number of their credit union, I didn't mess with their account but they should be thankful that I'm honest, anybody could have drained their account. I went back to that ATM about 2 weeks later and remarked, "I hope nobody left their card here again." Guess what, somebody did. It was the same situation, I don't know if somebody had stolen the card and couldn't get it to work so they left it or if somebody just forgot to get their card back. Either way, I had to call and mail it to their bank. Now everytime I go to an ATM I cringe to think that somebody has left their card.
