Will the Democrats Get a Majority of 60?

If the Dems pick up enough seats in the Senate to have 60 then they'll become "filibuster-proof". I know it's a bit of a stretch and may be too much to hope for, but the way things are going for the GOP it certainly isn't out of the question. The indictment of Alaska Republican Ted Stevens moves that seat into the "in play" column at the very least and many other GOP Senators are vulnerable at best including N.C. Senator Elizabeth Dole.

Other possible new Senate Democrats could include Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.) and Al Franken (MN). Many people seemed to think that once the Democrats took over the majority in both houses of Congress in 2006 that would mean they could push through anything they wanted but it doesn't work quite that way. Even 60 in the Senate isn't enough to guarantee the ability to override a Presidential veto without a little help from the Republicans. Gee, could we get to 67...lol?

There is hope! The dems are rapidly gaining control of congress, and the greatest examples of corruption are Republicans -- another reason to vote otherwise. We casn hope, and talk it up among our friends, and try to get people to see that we need to turn this disaster around now. Otherwise, how much hope is there for the US? Great societies -- far greater than ours -- have fallen when corruption takes hold. I doubt that we've ever had more corruption than started when the election was stolen from Gore!

Thanks. I've been adamant about getting some change in place, to the extent that my Secret Santa gift this year was a calendar that not only makes fun of Bush; it counts down until he's gone.

"Gee, could we get to 67...lol?" Maybe if McCain keeps lying, people will get fed up and vote the other way. Wouldn't that be nice? Hey...don't you think it's ironic that all the talk of off shore drilling, and now look what's floating in the Mississippi, yet we haven't heard much about this. I just read this morning that the boat, barge whichever is still leaking oil into the river.

Do you really have that much faith in politicians Annie? I mean, regardless of what party they are aligned with, the current senators running the show have done a horrible job. Hillary Clinton voted for the war in Iraq. Obama had no reservations about voting in favor of Bush's illegal wiretapping. The congress hasn't done much, but what it has done is support an unpopular war and unconstitutional eavesdropping. That includes the democrats. What we really need is to clean house. Of course, that decision can only be made by the senators who have already proven themselves both selfish and incompetent.

Believe me, Taskr, my faith is slipping and I can't disagree that both parties have been "disappointing" to put it very mildly. I was very disappointed in Hillary back when she voted for the war and even more so when she refused to admit she'd been wrong. Others in the House and Senate who I'd always thought a lot of had also disappointed me regarding the Iraq war but at least most of them did admit to having made a mistake. Obama really disappointed me concerning the wiretapping bill, I'm not afraid to admit that. That having been said I'm more than willing to give the Dems the benefit of the doubt if they increase their majority and therefore have no excuse to not get some things accomplished. I just hope too many of them don't turn out to be DINO's.
