Why is it that, the second you turn away.....

How come, you can stand and wait ages for your pasta to come to the boil in the saucepan but, the second your attention is diverted elsewhere, the water rushes up the side, forces the lid off and boils out all over the hob!!(I think that bubbling noise is really the pasta laughing!) Is this just a case of the 'watched pot never boils' - but an unwatched one.....

*laughs* very well said. Watched pots indeed never boil and the moment we divert out attention it spills!! So true!

Maybe they are emotionally traumatised and socially demotivated by not having our undivided attention and that causes them to vent their feelings by making a mess of the hob ...

That used to happen to me all the time. I learned a trick to keep pots from boiling over though. Add about a tablespoon of butter to the pot before the water starts to boil. For some reason the water does not do that foamy bubbly thing when it boils if you do this.

I do remember reading that a tablespoon of cooking oil helped but I didnt find it effective so maybe i'll try the butter... does it have to be real butter or will low-fat spread do the trick??

I am not sure about the spreads. I have always used real butter.

i cover my pot to let the water boil before putting pasta noodles in. and then when it boils, i uncover the pot and put some salt and a little cooking oil to it and then noodles. i let it cook uncovered for a few minutes according to its package direction.
