mylotters do we need more rules and regulatins and self appointed inside cops here than we already have? I have read several
disucussions berating us mylotters from all doint the same discussion or similar ones, one person says that because the poster is using the same subject he is breaking rules even
though the topic is different and the discussion is all worded'completly differnt. now this is nit picking am
I wrong or not? Your take on this.

Hiya Hatley,
I have actually participated in a discussion today about this same subject, IF we are speaking about the same discussion, I have to say that the user who posted this concern about reporting someone who is using the same subject just different wording.. had a concern with it being the SAME USER just recreating the same discussion. Now that is if we are speaking of the same post.
There are so many of the same posts out there that it gets confusing.. don't you agree?

The "rules" do say that one should not start multiple discussions about the same topic. I think it makes sense that one person should not start 6 discussions about the same thing.

I agreeif the same posteris actually just repeating word for word the same discussion then yes it is wrong, but what I am getting at is that many people seem to think that you are posting the same discussion only you are not as you are talking about a completely different aspect of this topic, and your discussion is not at all like the first one, so why whould you be penalized for that. I have done this and mylot has never ever deleted any of my discussions. i am just saying these couple of posters are nit picking.

Hello, Hatley!
In fact, there are lots and lots of users creating the same discussions, with the same Topics. I believe that I have seen at least ten discussions with the "What's your favorite color" and "what your favorite Ice-cream flavor". And I have seen at least ten discussion aswell complaining about those members who only create discussions like that. In fact, everybody should give it a check in the FAQ before creating a discussion to be able to tell if they are or not breaking the rules. Why not check it out?
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

Afer being here for almost 2 years I have seen many, many similar discussions. Usually the people who complain because they, for some unknown reason, think they have copyright if theirs was first and that is difficult to tell. However if it is an obvious copied discussions (almost word for word identical) then that is a different story and should be reported as plagiarism.

If you look at the discussion guidelines, it does ask that members help out in finding blatent rule breakers. And one of the "rules" is that they don't multiple posts about the same things.
That being said, I don't think the MyLot powers that be should be (and probably are not) concerned if two or three or even six people post about the same topic. Since the number in the corner telling how many members there are now is over 138,000 I am sure that there can be two people posting on the same topic at the same time. But even if it's not at the same time, even if there already is a discussion on the same topic, you might have a different perspective and might ask a different kind of question to get the discussion rolling.
Besides, everyone has different friends, so discussions might not be seen by everyone.
I'm sure the folks who own and run this site want good discussions going. At one site I visit regularly, there are dozens (and sometimes it seems like hundreds) of discussions on the same topic. It doesn't hurt anyone.

Glad I could be of assistance, Hatley. Thanks for the best response.
I really cannot believe that the self-appointed police are making such an issue about this. Truly, at 2 other sites where I spend most of my time, there are dozens of articles every day about the same topics. I would think that it would actually HELP the site to have that many things show up in search engines. Wouldn't you?

Hi there,
Believe it or not, I have tried to research a discussion before I've started one and nothing would come up. Then as soon as I posted it, a whole list would come up and say simular discussions.
I would have been happy to respond to theirs.
As a matter of fact, seems like someone else commented on that very thing, they couldn't find a discussion and as soon as they posted it a bunch came up.

I didn't know that it would be considered breaking rules. I
don't know what the rules are anymore! I'm getting to the
point now where I'm afraid to say anything for fear that I
might get "pulled over" for unlawful myloting! I've been here
1 month and I just want to respond to intelligent discussions.
I am guilty on occasion of starting some discussions about
asking for help with things that I didn't understand when I
was a newbie, but I've quit doing that now because I see that
the senior members of mylot don't like to answer the same
questions over and over. I can't say I blame them and I'm
sorry. I am trying to be the best myloter I can be!

i guess almost all the discussion here are similar in some ways..maybe some members here confused of the copy paste thing discussion and the similar type ones..which they think are copying on ..i think the admin knows how to deal with it ..and as a mature individual here ..i think we dont need any additional if thats what you mean here since we ourselves can pose as one..

I think if the discussion is based on your own views and opinions then it shouldn't matter. Take execution for an example, I can do a discussion on whether I agree or disagree with it, another person can do one on it and how it affects other would be criminals, another could do one on the best type of execution and still another could do one on the criteria for executing someone. They all have the same basic topic but from different viewpoints.
I can see someone complaining if a discussion is exactly word for word identical to another discussion...that's just blantant copying and should be reported.

I've seen these newbies with their posts on rules
and regulations and they do get on my nerves.
Hope they realize their discussion on rules is not
a real discussion, since it doesn't offer a question
worth answering and has been posed by at least 100
other more worthy members.
All new members go through the self righteous phase
and try to tell us veterans of Mylot how to play the game.
The nerve!

I don't make that much of a deal of this issue since I do know the numbers involved in all of this. Unfortunately I got misunderstood by a couple of members, but I think it got cleared up. As long as the discussion isn't a complete rip of someone elses discussion I'm fine with it. There is also a time issue with discussions as well. For instance I answered two different discussions on String Theory in recent hours. The discussions themselves were more than a year apart from each other, but showed up in related content. Things like this happen all the time on mylot and its nothing to nitpick or (maybe gestapo) over ;p

It's totally wrong. People have been running around saying you copied me- blah blah blah. All the crying is getting annoying. There are many users and sometimes discussions get repeated but in different wording. I could have seen one discussion from my friend but maybe I have never seen the original. You may get whole different perspectives from one discussion and not the other even though the subject may be similar. So you can't always tell when you are writing a discussion that it has been done before. Different people have different friends here so you may have seen one discussion but not the other. All this crying just needs to stop if you ask me. :)
One more thing though- there have been NUMEROUS repeat discussions on MYlot about the site itself but noone ever says anything about those. Are those exempt??

Hiya, Hatley! Some of these people apparently don't look at the bottom of the page to see: myLot population: 138,490. And that number is increasing. So, do they think that each person who starts a discussion is going to be able to find the 138,491st or 138,492nd unique topic about which to write?
Unless someone copies my discussion and uses it as their own, I don't see a problem with it. Odds are there will be something different - either they'll list it under an entirely different interest (there are many overlapping interest areas) or they'll have different friends than I do or whatever. It's still different, they'll still get different responses than I do, etc.
I think THEY are the ones doing the nitpicking, not you, quite frankly.

you are right hatley. who has the time to check thousands of discussions to make sure they are not posting the same subject?

My Take on this Hatley is that they are picking up on the wrong things here and not watching the real Rule Breakers which I keep coming across so I just give up with this Site, as they are loosing money by paying the big Cheats on here and nit picking on silly things
But hey who are we? Only the Members that are trying to point things out and being ignored, I have been here from the Start near enough, and the Site used to be wonderful, then bit by bit the trolls came here and all else started happening.

Hi Hatley,
When the topic and well as content is entirely different, I guess we have not leave it alone and stop identifying it as the same to the old one!
but, I have seen a lot of similarities this time and members complaining that their post were copied!

I guess, because of the so many posts or threads here, others no longer noticed that what they are starting is already similar to others. Better that the admin will have an automatic filter wherein if the posts is already similar with the rests, it should no longer appear.

I believe it is not against myLot's guidelines if we start a
discussion under the same topic but with a different angle.
So members starting discussions about topics which are already
started should not be persecuted. I think what myLot is against
here is spamming, that is, just copying and then pasting the
same discussion just to make more money.
Have a nice day!
