Ohh the back breaking work  email this discussion to a friend?

As a lot here know I do a LOT of gardening of veggies, fruits, and flowers etc. I also have my own composting container. This is a bin is all. See attatched photo. It is a 30 gallon bin I think. I have to add to it and turn it with a pitchfork by hand. It is a lot of hard, back breaking work, but man the compost sure helps the plants all thrive very well. Do you do your own composting? Do you have the tumbler type of barrell or old fashioned like mine? Do you just have an area where you throw stuff to compost on it's own? What all do you ad to your compost pile/bin?

I love the idea of a compost bin. Where I live at I can not have one. But I sure think that it is a great idea. Has to save you a lot of money. Once you get it going I mean! Sorry that it is back breaking work.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 225 in grandpa bob  4 years ago

It does not save me money actually.
I never used compost in my garden till I started making it myself.
I love it though, even though it's hard work.

I don't compost, but my neighbor behind me does. And I and to theirs.
They add any kind of food products.
They have a hole dug in the ground where they add.
Then they remove it from their and place it in their garden.:)

I also avoid twigs bigger around then my
pinky finger as they take forever to compost.

Your right, they don't add meat. Veg., potato peelings, and they
do a lot of canning, so I'm sure there's stuff from that.
I'm not sure what they mix with. Sorry. ...:)

Even though I am not very capable of doing the work myself any more I make sure all of the fall leaves go into the compost pile. One of these days I will have enough energy to make a vegetable garden and enjoy the produce i get from it.

I have a compost area surrounded by wooden pallets, so that air gets in. I put eggshells, vegetable peels, grass, leaves, dead house plants, coffee grounds, and tea bags in for sure. Just no meat, milk or fat. Everything else.

I knew someone who did this compost thing and it amazed me to know that one could do that and it would help the plants to grow however, I'm not knowledged in that field but I'd sure loved to learn! What is put into the compost pile? I can't wait to see the responses on this one!! Cool topic Grandpa Bob!!

Leaves, grass, food scraps. paper shredded, most food except bone, meat, milk, cheese, feces. Mostly anything can be added as long as it decomposes easily.

Shredded paper? That's a new one, never heard of that and we have loads and loads of shredded paper all the time because I'm so careful to not let private information of ours get out. Cool! I'll start one and it'll have a lot of paper for sure! lol Thanks Grandpa Bob!

Aw Bob, you sure work hard. I have a compost pit too, but I simply won't be able to manage one as big as the one you have. I have simply dug a pit in the earth, and I dump the kitchen waste in it. The weeds are managed separately. This is only for kitchen waste. And you are right, it makes excellent food for the plants.

Cheers and happy mylotting

I have never tried composting, it sounds as if it would be smelly and attract flies! I plan to look into it more this winter as I plan next year's flowers and garden, though. If it's back breaking, I won't be doing it with my bad back, though! Sounds as if you're being rewarded for all your work with those lovely vegetables.

I just have heaps for my compost. One of them is contained within some scrap wood which makes a square box and I layer old cardboard boxes on the top to keep out the sun, but the one on the veg field is simply a heap. I don't even bother turning that one. When it's time to rotovate the field I just spread it over and the rotovator turns it in.

I do have worm bins as well though, where allot of my kitchen waste ends up. I'm constantly surprised at what an excellent job the worms do of making fabulous compost, and I use that when I'm potting things up by hand.

I'd love one of those tumbling composters for next to the house. My Dad has one and I keep saying I'll make one but just don't get around to it.

I chuck everything on the compost or in the worm bins, food scraps included. I know that isn't recommended in the gardening books, but it's primarily to avoid attracting vermin and I have no problem with them as I have a large property and any that do appear are dealt with by the cats.

I also add the chicken and rabbit bedding to the compost, as it needs a little time to rot down before it can be added to the beds.
