U.S. army deserter being deported back to the US from Canada.  

I think it's right - some may disagree but sorry I've known too many people who served our country faithfully weither they agreed with the 'situation' or not, I am also the mother of a US military member who has served for 10 years now. I say if this guy didn't want to do what was required then he shouldn't have joined.

P.S. - my son has been deployed dozens of times, complained, Mom worried and stressed, but he did what he enlisted to do - serve our country.

I don't know what to think about this. I think I'd rather have their army deserters in our country than their murderers. I don't know why it takes us so long to extradite the criminals. Of course, by deserting he made himself into a criminal. My sister is being deployed again soon, and I'd be really annoyed if someone deserted and left them even more short-handed.

Yes, I think Canada should let him stay. If you don't believe in the war, you should not have to fight in it.

Well I am guessing that this guy joined before 9/11... so I can understand his fear but he signed up. It's not like people don't know that this could happen if they were in the military that they may end up in a combat zone. It's not like this guy was one of those men that were drafted. My grandfather was drafted into the army and fought overseas. He didn't run away. But if he had I'd say he didn't ask for the job, I couldn't really blame him for running. Some people may disagree with that, but that is what in my mind makes what this man in Canada did the wrong thing to do. I hope the military with show some compassion for the sake of his child but he will have to be held accountable for his actions.

I can see both sides of this actually...perhaps when he signed up he didn't believe he'd be deployed but stay in the US...at the same time whenever you join the military you take the chance of being deployed. Rather than run off to Canada I think he should have talked to a commander about the problem. If he was that upset and scared to be deployed perhaps he wasn't suited for battle. As I understand it, once you join your locked in till your times up but ppl with mental conditions including extreme anxiety shouldn't be out in combat anyways...it could lead to alot of accidents.

While I don't believe that it's right to be a deserter, at the same time, I think that some of these ppl that get into the military don't think it through. They think it's all about doing basic training stuff, getting more education, getting trained in a job and going to neat places like Hawaii...they don't think that it might also mean wars, dying and leaving those you love behind. Since the military makes it so easy and some of the recruiters actually lie to the ones applying, it only makes sense that when their faced with something like war, they end up running.
