Pistol Packin' Granny makes robber CALL POLICE ON HIMSELF! |

| Yes, it is true. At least one punk is mighty embarrassed. Probably no gang will have him anymore. Here's the story. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi... I say it is true that God created man, but Smith & Wesson made them equal. What do you say. | | | | | |

| | Wonderful. It's always horrible when theives pick on anyone, but especially the elderly. I'm so glad she was able to turn the tables on him and, hopefully, teach him a lesson. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, the politicians who do not allow elderly ladies like the one you mentioned to be armed, are partly responsible with their ignorance for what happened. | | | |

| | We had a similar case here in Arkansas in the 1980's. In that case, granny had to kill the intruder as he tried to choke her to death but did not know she had a gun. What makes the story memorable is that the police gave her a loaner firearm while the ballistics test was done on her gun. You see, she complained that she would be unprotected if they took her gun so they helped her out. | | | |

| | Well said Gregory! A 17 year old burglar. A bold granny - a gun! All of this makes for high drama. I bring up my kids with the values that will make them help granny cross the road. I suppose at that tender age of 17 someone should bawl out the parents; at least take them off relief! | | | | | | |

| | Hello Red, Good for Leda for protecting herself! I share Leda's hope that 'nabbing' the young, unnamed assailant will be the end of the 'burglary ring'. Though, I will admit that I wish the news coverage had been more comprehensive. There are so many unanswered questions. If this is to truly be a learning opportunity, then I for one would like to know how the young man gained entry to Leda's home -- did he surprise her, or was it the other way around? Did he make any attempt to prevent Leda from moving about the home freely? How was 85 year old Leda able to go get her gun? Did she talk her way into gaining access to the bedroom? And, why didn't he run or attack her before she forced him to make the call to the P.D.? Based on the info provided, it seems like 'the burglar' wasn't demonstrating predictable, criminal behavioral patterns. I have to hope that the kid really was a burglar, and not a local kid dropping something off for her from his parents, delivering groceries, or some similarly innocuous circumstance. No harm, no foul -- I guess. I just wonder what the Associated Press reporter was thinking when he or she submitted this account. So many relevant details are ommitted, and the compliant 'burglar' is presented as timid as a lamb. This kind of atypical story is comforting to read, but how closely does it parallel reality? More importantly, would reading this kind of a marshmallow presentation lull another senior into a sense of complacency about the potential dangers of a home invasion? If I had my way, this story would have the following ending: Based on the very real need for firearms self-defense training, the N.R.A. and the Pennsylvania State Department on Aging have joined forces to offer Seniors a firearm and personal safety training course. For more information, contact your local Senior Citizens Center or Office on Aging at 555-555-1234. Yeah, I know -- wishful thinking eh? It's just that our Seniors are so very vulnerable. I really respect and appreciate that Leda is capable of taking care of herself. Yet, how many of our sage elders are no longer able to do as Leda did? | | | | | | |

| | I've known healthy intelligent people in their 80's who are actually quite dangerous to any criminal when it comes to defending themselves. Particularily women. Oldsters know any jury sympathy is going to be with them and they are old enough to not care what society thinks. They just are not going to put up with some punk stealing from them or pushing them around. As to what happened. I thought the woman came home and the punk thought she was harmless and could be ignored as long as she did not go near the phone. So, she just calmly went and got her gun. The rest is history. I suspect we don't hear more stories like this as so many editors are liberals and don't want to encourage people to own firearms. | | | |

| | Hello Red, Agreed! There are many healthy Octogenarians who are very capable of defending themselves. I hope that it didn't sound like I was lumping all Seniors together as disabled & decrepid. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Yet, there are a great many Seniors who are targeted because of physical frailty and decreased mobility. Personally, I think it's terrific that the story did indicate that Leda was using a .22 caliber. I'm guessing that it was a stock .22 which held either 11 or 15 rounds. An inexpensive, lightweight, semi-automatic option that can certainly get the job done. That's the kind of info I can see as being very helpful in a Senior training program. By the time we get to be Octogenarians, we will all lose some level of muscle tone, so a heavy 9mm or 45cal can be too heavy an option to use, particularly for a petite, older woman. Geesh, I don't even like to shoot Hubby's .45, 'cause it's way too heavy, meaning that I'd have to sacrifice accuracy to the kick, and I'm of average build. Thanks for the follow up on who might have startle who. I was guessing that you had seen or heard more coverage of the story than just this posted article. As for hearing or not hearing more stories like this, I'm kind of surprised that the MSM picked it up at all -- especially since it happened in Pennsylvania. It just seems too tempting for a 'clinging to her gun' reference, doesn't it? I'm surprised that it hasn't been plastered on the airwaves. Or, maybe it has, and I've just missed it, since I've been kind of out of the news loop recently. | | | |

| | Yep... yet there are people who would say that we have no business owning guns. If more of this happened the crime rate would really go down. | | | | | | |

| | I actually think the reduction in crime rate from honest citizens owning guns is why so many lawyers, judges, and police are against backing up citizens using firearms to protect themselves. They don't want to lose work. | | | |

| | LOL Good for granny:):): I'm afraid not all bulglary cases might be this easy to take care of but at least granny did take care of this one:):) I agree that smith and weston has it's benefits, but it can also get people to be overconfident which can be dangerous... then again , everything has its drawbacks LOL | | | | | | |

| | True, firearm ownership does come with serious responsibility. Then again, so do automobiles which every 2 years kill more people than America lost in the entire Vietnam War. Iraq war = about 4000 killed. Killed in automobiles? About 40,000 each year. Put in perspective the price of firearms ownership is worth the cost to keep the nation free. | | | |

| | I'm not worried about the ones that are responsible and careful with their firearms, but with the many more that keep showing responsibility is an alien thought and concept LOL I'm a bit divided in this subject - although I'm very proud of granny :). The thing is just being able to buy a firearm is nothing - not even in terms of defense. Having a firearm and not even know how to use it is a dangerous thing, and I know a few... In a perfect world, I would be the first one in line for the right to have one. It makes sense. But it's not a perfect world. Cars certainly are bigger killers, but hey they do have other uses. Firearms on the other hand only have one :) That said, I agree with you, in principle. | | | |
