This afternoon I have been at the charity event which was organised to raise money for a work collegue and a friend of my neighbour who was killed in an accident recently, she supported Cancer Research all her life so it was organsized to raise money for a memorial bench for her and he rest to go to Cancer Research. Well I have uploaded a pick of my friend with her head shaved and then sprayed pink but upon responses will upload more as it would be good to see her with hair and also they put her in the stocks to shave it. A great day was had by all, I won a joint of beef in the meat raffle and the total raised so far is £1046 which is being added to all the time. I personally wouldn't have shaved my heade but it certainly did raise some money, you have recently shared crazy things that you have done for charity so today I will ask you all what is your favoutire charity and why? Also what do you think of the pic. Ellie:D

Hi Ellie.
I think you took a very good picture! Your friend, Wendie, is very brave to have her head shaved to support Cancer Research. Good for her!
Congrats on winning the joint of beef in the meat raffle. Fantastic!
I am not sure that I have a favorite charity but I do have a special place in my heart for domestic violence programs. I've worked with many victims of domestic violence and used to volunteer for such a program many years ago when I lived up north.

Ellie,
Your poem is quite powerful. You must be thrilled that it is posted in Women's Refuges in the UK. I have no doubt that it is inspiring to the women who come to the shelters. You should be proud. Well done. Thanks for sharing it with me and other myLotters.

Hi PearlGrace, I wrote this poem a few years ago which is now on the wall in womens refuges in the South West of the UK and if it helps just one women see that she is being controlled and not her fault it is good so it has a place in my heart too, I have helped a few woman myself to get out of situations. Here is a copy.
My body may be battered and bruised
From you no more will I be abused
Inside I am strong
What you did was wrong
Today I'll start to sing my song
Life you see still goes on.
Freedom is the gift you've given me
It took this event to make me really see
Just how joyful freedom can be
You may have thought you loved me
What you did in fact was control
I've now taken my own direction
It might be a winding road ahead
But now i'm relaxed at night
I now sleep in my bed
My body may be battered and brusied
But bruises heal. Time to heal yourself
I'm still your friend, I still care
Release your bruised heart if you dare.
ECH 2000 (c)
Wendie did do a great job today though, I admire her for being so brave.

St. Judes Childrens hospital and the ASPCA. St. Judes takes care of children with cancer, no matter if they have money or not. Many families come from all over to there. The families are put up so they can be close to their young one. It doesn't cost one cent if you can't pay. They have also been known to take adults in to treat as well.
The ASPCA, is for animals that have been abused or abandoned. They rescue them, give them health care, and food and try to find homes for them when they are ready to go to a home.

Hi Moondancer, I think this hospital does an amazing job as it is very important for the families to be able to stay close to the children. It is good too that someone looks out for the animals. Thanks for sharing. I have uploaded different pics of the day in some of the other responses if you want to see the before and after pics. Ellie :D

We sponsor a child through World Vision. My kids wanted to sponsor someone who would be their little sister, we found a little girl Melida De Jesus, she lives in San Salvador, we send her letters and she just had a birthday. We plan to buy her a goat for Christmas so her family can have milk and cheese. One day we plan to go and see her so the kids will know that one life can be touched by a caring person. The pic looks cool, a bald head always looks good with a little color on top.

Wow what a brave lady!! I am afraid i wouldn't have the guts to do this! She's obviously really committed to raising money for the cause, which is fantastic and something to be admired, she should feel really proud of herself! My favourite chairites are macmillan cancer research and help the aged. I am a student nurse and eventually want to work with the terminally ill, an area which deals predominantly with the elderly. I really enjoy caring for the elderly and think that in general they are not given enough attention, they have a whole lifetime of knowledge and experience to share with us and a lot of people find it difficult to be around them, which is sad!! So, for these reasons (which probably sound quite strange!!) they are my favourite charities!! well done for your part in the fundraising ellie and i hope you enjoy that joint of beef!! xxx

Hi Munchkin, I agree I love chatting to elderly people, I used to spend hours listening to my nanas stories of when she was younger. In fact earlier in the week myself and my son went to feed the ducks and there was an old boy with his dog sat on the bench and my son (4) were chatting for ages about planes and trains. It was lovely. He told me he visited the park daily for company bless. So many just shut themselves away in their homes or are unable to get out, so a great job you do Munchin
. Wendie done a great job too and there is still more money coming in. Ellie :D

Aw what a sweet story! older people have so much to give, they've generally got time on their hands and love telling their stories, which are usually entertaining as well as teaching us things about the past and what went on before we were born! More people should definitely make time for them, it's wrong that after working all their lives, possibly having fought for this country and everything else some are shut away alone with noone to talk to! You're little boy will have made that man's day! I hope the fundraising total keeps rising! xxx

A great deal of respect to Wendie for doing this for such a good cause!
This week the largest charity for the research in cancer in Holland is collecting money door to door. I allways give to this charities because I have lost a lot of dear family members to this awfull disease. I try and contribute to any charity that has been approved by the government and certain organisations that proof they actually use the money that they collect for the causes they say they collect it for.
I try to allways contribute to at least the cancer research, dissabled children, cystic fibrosis and heart dissease research.

That's fabulous Ellie...I'm glad they made a big fuss of the whole operation...it sounds like it was lots of fun. Was your friend the only one to get her head shaved? We usually get a heap of guys doing it but they don't make so much fuss. It's a common occurrence here when there is collecting for cancer research.

How wonderful that your friend went through with it Ellie! I have to say it was certainly worthwhile to raise such an amount and everyone involved should be very proud of themselves! I am afraid i am one of those people who just cannot have one favourite charity but several, there is NSPCC and NCH both Childrens charities, Cancer REsearch, , Shelter for the homeless and of course the ones run for our local hospice and Scotlands Childrens Hospice along with many more that I help when I can , which isn't very often at all these days! xxxx

I'm answering this from notifications Ellie so I haven't seen the pic yet. But fantastic. She must be so pleased with her efforts and for such a worthwhile cause too. You had some success there too and didn't get anything shaved or cut! My favourite charity is probably The Salvation Army. I'm not a member, but I think that they do so much good. Especially with the homeless. Now those stocks. That's not where the mouth washing is going to take place is it? LOL.

He, he, now that IS an idea LOL, yeah lets put him in the stocks too. Have uploaded a couple of pics in the other responses, one of Wendie with her beauitful long hair before it was done and one of her in the stocks with it cut but about to be shaved, yikes. So will up load another here also. The Salvation Army I think are great too, I did in fact go every week when I was younger and when I came out of hospital after I ruptured my spleen they were fantastic and really helped me a lot and came to see me as I couldn't walk properly yet either. I always used to by the Young Soldier, you don't see them out and about so much now though, very worthy cause. I try to help the homeless too through Shelter. Ellie:D @gemini_rose (16264)

It sounds like a good day was had by all and a lot of money raised for a good cause! It was nice that you won a little something too. I would never shave my head for anything, just not something that I could do but I commend anyone who does, my hubbys cousin recently did this to raise money for douglas macmillan when his mum was dying from cancer. He had really long hair, he is 17 and a bit of a heavy metal fan so it was a big thing for him to shave it all off!

Hi Gemini_rose, Oh it was an excellent day and yes a lot of money raised and still more coming in too which is fantastic. There are lots of before and after pics now within the discussion if you want to take a peek, I think it is great when people do do this but I personally choose to give time or money and support where I can. hi ellie.
my favorite charity is greenpeace. i am a volunteer and attend theri activities whenever i can. no i don't join protests but i do donate cash monthly to the organization. i also encourage friends to sign up and join forums so that they themselves will be aware of the things that they can do to save the environment. as for crazy stories, well i did have my hair dyed red to create a "buzz" in recruiting members. not really a big deal so to speak.
anyway, what you did is really great and i'm sure everyone in the event appreciated your efforts.

I am not sure if I can do that kind of sacrifice to help others? I probably do other things in order to help not shaving my head. I am helping others too not specific charity because we don't have a lot of that in my country but.. I also do things to help others.

Took me a while to repond to this cos have lost a few close people to cancer i would probably shave my hair for it it probably wouldn't bother me. I'd probably have been making tshirts and sashs and stuff for the day or organising something rather than being the one shaving my head. Shes very brave and kind to have done it though and thats a fantastic amount of money to raise. I have a few favourite charities cancer research being the main but also christies hospice and pendlebury (childrens hospital)and rspca and bornfree etc. I'm a big softie so i usually end up roped into whatever charity even someone else is doing. When i was younger i used to do stuff every weekend for BWDSA (disabled supporters association) butthen i went to uni and didn't have the time. Now i have the time but not the money lol

Hi Mands, Sorry that you have suffered loss through this terrible disease, I don't know many people who haven't been affected in some way by it which is why I think Wendie done such a great thing and more money is still coming in so the total will probably be a lot more. I tend to give time and money and will donate items too but don't participate in head shaves other than to help on the day. Thank you for responding as it was a difficuly subject. Huggles. Ellie :D
