Flash Drives Replacing Briefcases?

I read this claim in a recent ad: Flash Drives are now replacing briefcases in the business world. These tiny devices do hold an incredible amount of information and take up hardly any space. I can see where they would be much more desirable than even the sleekest briefcase. If you are out in the business world on a daily basis have you switched to using the flash drives rather than carrying a briefcase? Do you think that carrying a briefcase adds a more professional aspect to your appearance?

You know worldwise I don;t need to use a briefcase or a flash drive professionally and whilst I think that for most things a flash drive is fantastic I don't think that for the most part that they can do away with briefcases all together - there will always be circumstances where paper copies are needed and you cannot rely on computers always being functioning and/or available! xxx

I totally agree with you, mummymo! The flash drives are a handy little gadget that might have their place, but, as you said, there will always be a need for hard copies.

I have a couple of flash drives, but I also have a brief case (actually it was my son's but he did not want it) because not every place has a computer. I use them because I do not have a lap top and also for saving my novel on it. I think you can use both, depending on what the purpose is. It is certainly easier than carrying a whole bunch of papers around you, and maybe getting them damp in the rain. And it is easier to steal a briefcase, rather than a flash drive that you can put on your key chain, in any one of your pockets, around your neck, etc.
But carrying a briefcase does make you look more businesslike even if you hid your dvd collection in it.

I really like the briefcases, suspenseful, and I have one that I've owned for over twenty-five years. I would still use the flash drives sometimes because of all the reasons you have mentioned.

A briefcase is only as good if you have a place to put it and you never renovate your house. But once you renovate your house, you may have to store things in the basement. And if you have a lot of stuff, then you cannot put it all in the briefcase. You have to go and buy a file cabinet and they are not cheap these days, papers can be burnt or cut up. So I find a flash drive easier. I do have a box folder for my secret personal stuff and I do have my marriage certificate and birth certificate, citizenship papers and insurance, but I also put my cds on a flash drive just in case I lost them.

Thanks for the best response. About the flash drives, Iam getting them organized. I have so many photos that I need one just for that.

I think it's worrying that everything is starting to get replaced by machines, I know they save us so much time and are lifesavers, but are we really relying heavily on machines and technology too much? I mean we survived without the technology didn't we and I for one would much prefer to carry a briefcase around with me than a machine, what if the machine goes wrong or you lose the data, plus they become prime targets for robbers, like mobile phones which can be sold on! I hate laptops and would never carry one around with me, but that's just my prerogative and I am not up with the technical gadgets coming from a guy who thought blue tooth was something to do with whales! No give me a briefcase anytime you can keep your flashy flash drives.

At the time I started this discussion, wolfie, I had never owned a flash drive, but, thanks to my daughter, I do own one now. Of course it is something to worry about that we have become entirely too dependent upon machines. Like you, I tend to stick with the old way in most instances.

I love my flash drives. I find them terribly convenient as a means of carrying info...and I gotta tell you, I'm no businessman...
When I was commuting for work, I always thought bulky briefcases looked cumbersome and uncomfortable. By comparison, a sleeker briefcase looked much better.

If I were in business, Ms Tickle, I believe that I would prefer the sleeker variety of briefcase. On the other hand, as you stated the flash drives are so convenient.

Where I work, flash drives are definitely used. It seems working at home on a laptop is quite common. I get emails that have been sent at 10:00 PM.
I don't see briefcases at all interestingly enough. The thing to carry seems to be tote bags - leather or canvas, funky or plain. Also huge purses/totes. Maybe it depends on the profession since this is in the human services field.

There does seem to be no end to the ways people find to carry their things, whittby. I suppose it is up to the individual to decide .

I've noticed these little flash drives becoming an accessory on people. They wear them around their neck like life guards do with chap stick. I guess if you want to transport information from one medium to another its faster, but you can't be without the device that displays the information. Soon you see the "designated laptopper" among flash drivers. I do have a couple of them and I'll applaud their size for storing information.

I only recently tried using a flash drive, gitfiddleplayer, and it was given to me by one of my daughters. I love the fact that they can hold so much information.

Yes, worldwise, they are a very handy tool!
I even use mine to carry and transfer music, as well as documents!
And then I have another one that just has pictures, in it!
ps- and thank you for the best response you gave me on the post about e-mail !
