So I was supposed to start this discussion yesterday but I forgot. So I went to sell my books back to my bookstore and I was hoping that I would get enough to buy at least two of the books that I need. So I was so dissapointed because I was only able to sell one of the books and it was for $9. I was so sad at that. And then some of the other books that I had, like three of them weren't worth anything.
So I am thinking of just selling them to BN no matter what price I get, because I already want to get rid of them. I'm not even using these books anymore and they are taking up space. So what has been you guys experience with selling books back? If you haven't had any experience then you could just respond and comfort me while I wallow in my sadness.

I've had that very same problem at the bookstore. I buy brand new books and then those books are NEVER taken back at the end of the semester or only get you a few dollars back.
Because of that and the outrageous prices at the bookstore, I've started buying my books online and I've even sold some of my books online. I created an Amazon.com marketplace account and the books the bookstore won't take back, I end up selling online. I sold one book back the bookstore wouldn't take back for a bit over $12. I sold the book I used for my summer class and only lost about 50 cents. It's a great idea to sell them online cause you can set your own price and usually you can get the book to sell.

Yeah that is what I was doing before my first year of college but then I stopped and plus I owe ebay some money right now so i'm going to have to pay that first. But it's a great idea to sell it online. Because I can gain more instead of selling it back to the bookstore. Although there was one book that I got some pretty good cash back from it.

Providing the books aren't too damaged, you could sell them for almost the price you bought them for on ebay, as there will be people who need the books that you needed the year before.
And it's so easy to sell things on ebay as well, everyone can do it.
Or maybe you could just chat to someone in the year below in person before they have the chance to buy their books, and ask them if they will buy them off you.

Yeah but then some of the teachers don't use the same edition as the year before and stuff. I'll probably be better of selling some of them online on Ebay like you said. Happy mylotting!

Hello ayumitakashi.
That is such a bummer about your being unable to sell most of your textbooks. I usually saved the books that wouldn't sell. Are there any used bookstores near you where you could take them and at least get credit to get some free books with the credit?
I can remember always hoping I would get a bunch of money for my texts, and that never happened. Or they would say, "Oh we're not taking that one anymore."
Sorry this happened to you. Just remember, there are many great things in your future, once you have your education.

Yeah I think that I'm going to check if Barnes and Nobles online can buy it from me or I'll probably go to one in person. Yeah and I've had them say that exact same thing and I would just feel so sad because I was hoping to get rid of some of them so I buy the new ones that I needed. But I am always having such a hard time with financial aid or the books in my university but I know that I have to finish because i'm the one that will be providing for my mother and my younger siblings. Thanks and I hope that what you said about my future is true.

hi ayumitakashi it was a number of years back that I sold my college books and I did get enought out of them to buy most
of my next quarter's books. but I do imagine things have
changed a lot since then. I did keep some of the books that
I had bought as they were excellent text books to have
on hand.

Yeah. Not much has changed actually. Last semester I was able to sell two books and got enough to buy one. But I didn't buy any textbook because the next semester was the summer semester and I wasn't registered for the summer semester. But as soon as this semester ends I'm going to sell back my books as early as possible. Because sometimes they get too many books from students and then they don't need any more.

selling books is really very difficult or if you sell it you need to sell for a low price.
i was never selling most of my books and its still lying in my moms place as i feel some time might be usefull and we may need it and hence i have kept it.
morever i use to have my senior friends who always give me their books and then after finishing my semester i use to again exchage it for the next semester
and it really helped me.
and its also a very good idea to save money and also you can finish your studies too.

That's really cool that your senior friends would help you out like that. Right now the two reasons why I want to sell them is because they take up a lot of space and because whatever money I get I could use for something. But I don't really think that I may need it. There is one book that I liked reading and I have kept and I also still have my Pschycology book from my first semester because I liked studying it and would like to read more about it and maybe take some more future classes.

Well ever since I was in primary school, I'd always kept my books nicely wrapped and neat ( no scribbles,no writings, no stickers or highlighted text) So that when the end of the year came. My school always have a second-hand book sale at the end of every school year that carries on till the last week of summer holidays. Over there parents and students are welcome to sell their last year books and get second-hand books at a cheaper rate and save some trees (paper). And well I've never had a problem so I hope you feel better.

Wow that's a really good idea for the school to do. Parents are better off with buying the books and the owners are able to make some money. I wish my elementary school and middle school would have done something like that. But at the end of the year I would see all these brand new books in the trash and I would get so mad that they were throwing out books that weren't even used.

Yeah that's what I'm about to do. Although I owe Ebay some money so I'm going to have to pay that first and then I could sell it.

Currently i attend college online. My books are sent to me and included in my tuition. I went to a college 4 years before this and i still have my psych book. I've have thought about selling it, but i love psychology and every so often i like to read my psychology book.
Sorry to hear you didn't get as much as you wanted for your books.
Did they have markings in them?(such as highlighters) What sort of condition were they in? This might have an effect on what they offer you for your book.

Oh no. I never use highlighters in the books. And they were brand new. I just think that maybe they weren't using the same edition anymore or something. But I'll just try to sell them online or something.

In my case, I really cherish my college books. I still use some of them for references. I also gave some of them to my relatives and friends who need them the most this time. Well, I can't finish my studies well without them. They're really valuable to me.

They've been doing that at college book stores since I went to school - in the 70s. New editions mean the old ones are toast, in their minds, even if only one thing changed. (Or sometimes nothing, really.)
I don't know about selling text books, but I sell lots of books on Amazon. I got $35 for a cookbook that was given to me. Almost retail. (It was a big, thick book.)

Yeah it's really stupid that the old ones aren't used even though they are the same. I heard about a law being passed that required teachers to let students use old editions or something like that. I do hope that they pass it soon because this will help out so many students.

Yeah I could also do that but then I would have to make flyers and get permission from the school to post them around the school. I think I'll rather sell them online. Or maybe I could take some time to do the flyers.

Selling books back to the bookstore is one of the most worthless experiences I have had. Once, they were willing to give me 5.00 for a 120.00 math textbook I bought 3 months earlier, because a new edition was coming out. Typically I think they give you around 20% what you paid for if the edition is the same as next time. They won't buy back some of them either sometimes if a new edition has come out, or if a class is not using it next term. Its a rip-off, and I'm sorry you had to deal with it. I'm still figuring out how to afford all my books.

$5! That is just crazy. But I actually get a decent amount I guess. I got around $70 or something like that for one last semester. And yeah if a new edition comes out then it's not worth anything anymore. But I heard that a law was passed that students would be able to use all editions for a class and that teachers should let us know. But I haven't heard about it going into effect or anything. One of the books that I have right now is a math textbook with another package that it came with and I bought it for around $172. I am going to try and sell it again when this semester is over. Hopefully it gets bought if I'm the first one of the students to go. But yeah it's really hard to afford books now, I try to get some of them from the library. So far I'm going to get all the books from one class from the library which will save me a lot of money. Oh and one book from another class. You should try that as an option. Good luck.

Oh okay. That's really cool. I have younger brother and sisters but I don't want to keep them because they take up too much space. And by the time they are in college we'll probably be better off and won't have as much problem as I had buying my college textbooks.
