Found items - what would YOU do if you learned who lost them?

A recent discussion by Grandpa Bob brought this question to mind and he gave the go ahead for me to follow up on it. Now, his item, while pricey, isn't necessarily an "item of value" as other things might be. So, this doesn't necessarily apply in his case. If you found something of value and didn't find the owner in the immediate vicinity, you would probably keep it, as would I (unless its value was rather extreme - I would then go to the police or post an ad). But, lets say in the days following the find, someone posted a "LOST" ad or a poster in the local market that described accurately both the item and the location it was found, so you knew you had what was once theirs. Would you contact them to tell them you found it? Or would you keep it because you liked it and believe in "finders keepers"? How would you justify keeping it if you did? I think it's an interesting thing to see how people think with these things. So, I thought I'd put the question in your laps. Wanna tell me how you would deal with it?

I do agree with you about the coffee mug that Grandpa Bob found. I do think he even went more than out of his way to see if anyone lost it. As for the item of value. I would for sure try to find the rightful owner and if I saw where someone lost the item and they did prove it was theirs I would hand it over to them without a second thought. I would also hope that if I ever lost something of value to me whether or not it is worth money or memories I would hope it would be returned to me as well.

Well thank you very much again friend. I think I would always have second thoughts returning a found item actually. especially if it was something I really needed or wanted. Hahahaha! But I would reluctantly turn it over I feel. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

well, I'd probably contact him. "finders keepers" isn't applicable anymore with that kind of situation. someone's looking for the thing that you knew you've got. and what's the reason for you not to bring it back? am I right? It already happened to us. my dad is a tricycle driver. one of his passengers left her mobile phone into my dad's trike. dad went home to tell me that he found a cellphone, and was thinking if I want it or will we sell it. I feel sorry for my dad to think of that way, really. and so I told him that, I don't want to use that phone where in fact, it isn't mine, and I know how it feels to lost a cellphone because it already happened to me for so many times. and if ever we'll going to sell it, I don't want to use the money for our own purposes. I don't want to use the money which came from a bad act.. and so he apologized to me. what we did was to wait for the owner to call us. and so she did. and then there, they met into some place and thank my dad for the good thing he did.. it was a wonderful feeling to do such good things. even material things can't give the feeling that we felt that time. and I am so happy that we've help someone which we really didn't know.

hi jerzgirl if I found that my item was being posted I would return it to the owner, as anything else would be theft and my conscience would not let me alone with this. I would definitely return it to its rightful owner, explaining about how at first you did not know who had lost the item so now that you do you want the right owner to have the item.

Good question Jerz! Well I'd like to think that if I lost something of value that someone would let me know and return it. But, in the real world it is very doubtful! So I just try to be careful not to lose anything of value. I have lost bracelets, earrings, etc. I get upset when I lose things, but I know that no one is going to return them so what is the point. My bf found a bracelet on the bus a few weeks ago. It was very nice. It had little gold hearts on it and they went up and down around the bracelet with a unique sort of swirl between them. It is a beautiful piece. I looked at and said that I felt bad for whomever had lost it because I'm sure it meant something to them. He said he wanted to sell it. I hate to say what happened next! All I can say is I'm feeling very guilty right now because as I write this I'm looing at that beautiful bracelet shiny really pretty on my right wrist-ok I know I'm sorry, but he was going to sell it!

I dont want to pick anything from down if it is not my property as for me everything is not favorable for me.. i mean many good people are suspected now a days even if go and do good to some people they look at us as if we are the robbers, if i returned some lost products to the people they would just suspect me if it was a purse and if the money was missing so i feel instead of getting into trouble i can mind my own business ..

I probably would've left it with lost and found in the first place, however, I would contact the person and return it. Now, when I am walking around my client's place to get the mail, I sometimes find things, I've found some change - in my pocket. I've found some small animal toys, to my client. I found a bike - I left it. I did look around for the child it belonged to, but I ducked into the office and told them about it. EVEN if it had been big enough for me to ride, I'd've done the same. Now, on my client's patio is a big yellow ball with a happy face on it. There is NO WAY anyone can normally get onto the patio from the outside - and this silly thing is smiling in the window - I don't know how it landed so perfectly - but it must've. I've left it there because I don't know which child's it is, and frankly they are lucky they didn't break anything when it landed in there. So I look out and smile back at it sometimes. I found a necklace once in the street - nothing hanging on it, the jump ring had broken. I had someone look at it tell me it was worth only about $20 buck and decided to keep it. I did, however drive past that corner nearly every day and I looked for any signs, I would've returned it, but as it was I got about 10 years of good use out of it myself before the links started pulling my hair out. OUCH!
