Prayer in schools

There is a lot of debate in the West whether it is right to pray in schools or not. Some Christians argue that all should pray even if the school is not Christian schools. Whereas others disagree. What is your opinion about the issue. Why do you hold onto the position? I have my position which I shall express as we discuss further.

When I was in elementary school in the 60's grad 1 through 6 we have prayer every morning and there was not anybody that had a problem with it. Maybe they just didn't say anything, but I knew all of the kids and graduated with most of them. The prayer was what we did and read some Bible verses. We all went to church. I think there should be a time for prayer, not for the whole, but for the ones that want to pray. If you dont' want to pray, that's okay, too.

I'm a Christian woman, and I do not believe that everyone should pray in school. I remember there were times when I would use the moment of silence to ask God to help me make it through the day, or sometimes I would even go to the restroom to pray. Not everyone is a Christian. Someone else may have a different belief, and you can't force your religion on someone else just because you think it's right. Becaue I know for a fact, I would not let someone do that to me. Having prayer in schools would not be fair to all children. There are so may kids who are raised to beleieve differnt things. If I want my daughter to have a strong faith in God, that's something that my husband and I, church, and the people we surrond ourselves with can help her with. When she goes to school, it should be all about learning. Not religion. I respect everyone's belief, whether I agree with it or not.

thanks for the wise comments. I think as you said that imparting Christian values in an explicit ways in school where others disagree with us will be unfair. So I largely agree with your view. Given BR!

Yes, there should be prayer in schools. Especially for the students and all whom have a role to play in school. I know that it is mostly needed nowadays..

But what do you suggest for non-Christians and for atheists? I wonder if Hindus would one day tell the Christians to recite their gayatri mantra here in India. I hope that does not happen. Speculating such situation I am afraid when Christians in the West say that all should pray in schools.

I believe we all have a God given right to speak our minds. If you don't believe in prayer in school then it your right to state that. The same goes for people that do want it in schools. However I do not believe in the way most people pray. My prayers are very private and are strictly between God and Me. I don't pray for others to hear me. I learned a long time ago the strongest prayer you will ever pray is in your thoughts. You can lie to man or God with your words but you cannot do it in your thoughts. I honestly don't believe God pays all that much attention to what we say. It is too easy for Him to just look inside us and see for Himself the truth about us and how we truly feel. If the kids in school really want to pray they can in private and no one can stop them. At the same time I believe all kids where ever they are have the right to express their opinions. We all need to practice at keeping our nose out of other people's lives.

Well, I believe in prayer. And I am a Christian. I however has problem with the idea that prayer be made compulsory in school. Cos in schools there are all sorts of people. In the US if prayer to Christian God is made compulsory, then in India prayer to Hindu God should be ok. But this Christian in the US will have problem. I believe prayer is important, but let us not insist it for schools owned by the state. That's my view. Anyway, thanks for the comment.

I don't believe prayer in schools should be compulsory either. I was raised Christian but a lot of kids in school were not and they have every right to follow their belief the same as anyone else does. There are people that are doing the best they can with what they have to work with in all beliefs. When it is all said and done who knows, we may all be right and then again we may all be wrong.
