I just woke up and put my bedside lamp on and there were sparks. I have had this lamp for years and never seen sparks before. I have no idea what caused them or if they are dangerous. Can any one help me about this?

I'd unplug it straight away if I were you and not use it again until you've had it repaired. It sounds like you've got some uninsulated wires somewhere and it could cause a fire. Don't just turn the lamp off because the current is still flowing. Unplug it from the wall.

Yes I have unplugged it as I am a little concerned. I would not want a fire starting.

Maybe you could have your lamp checked out just to be safe. If this lamp of yours has been that old since you said you had it for years maybe it's time for a checkup. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Yes it is very old. I do not remember how many years I have had it but it was a present from my brother at least 6 years ago, maybe longer.

This is extremely dangerous. It could mean that there is a problem in the wiring in the lamp. Maybe it is just old and needs replacing, but I would definitely dispose of it and get a new one. It could cause a fire at any time. It is possible that an electrician or someone who knew what they were doing could fix it, but I would definitely not use it any more in its current condition.

Any time an electrical appliance sparks it's dangerous! You need to either get rid of that lamp or have an electrician look at it because a spark can start a fire, either inside of the lamp itslef, or nearby. Don't take chances!

I have unplugged it even though the lamp was switched off. I am looked at the wiring and cannot see anything wrong.

Yes, it is dangerous. Your details are a bit sketchy, but the most probable case would be that the insulation on some wires has worn off and unisulated wires are touching each other. Stop using the lamp with immediate effect.
