What do you think prisons or jails are like in your home country? Last night I watched 'Banged Up Abroad. Two English men tried to smuggle drugs from Venezuela to the UK. They were told the airport staff were bribed and so they couldn't possibly get caught. As they were about to get on the plane they were found out though. They got sent to prison for about four years and their sentence was extended to ten years. It was a dangerous jail with many prisoners owning and using guns. They got day release and so escaped, going straight home. What do you think prisons and jails are like in your home country? Why do some people smuggle dangerous and illegal drugs?

The prisons in the UK are like holiday camps, they get all their meals provided, a roof over their heads, tv, computers, video games, gym, it's a life of luxury and it is no deterrant at all, that is why the crime is so bad in this country because prison is seen as luxury not a punishment. Prisoners have it better than some of the old age pensioners who worry about putting heaters on because of the rising cost of fuel and bills and food! They would be better off in prison where they get hot food provided and its safer for them, crazy isn't it. But prisons are luxurious places in the UK compared to other parts of the world.

Hi Wolfie as you know I am 100% behind you on this comment and it really gets my goat that the OAPs and even younger working people cannot heat and feed their families properly and yet the people in our jails live this cushy life. The justice system here is completely wrong they punish the victims rather than the criminals in most cases but not all. Ellie :D

If I was an OAP and found I couldn't support myself I would purposely commit a crime and ask to be sent to prison, all my meals paid for me, roof over my head, heating and security 24/7 and company, even another crim, rather than looking at four walls all day. I would jump at the chance, no rent, no bills, no problems at all! I am surprised pensioners don't think this way, could you imagine! Demanding to be sent to prison, I definitely would! Thank you my friend, it annoys me too, is it any wonder the crime rate is so damn hard? The guilty get rewarded and the innocent are punished and they call that justice!

Well, I know the prisons here in the US aren't pretty. But I guess that's the point. Some places are better than others, I suppose, but I'm not planning to find out.

Prisons and jails in my country are full. We have so many felons that we do not have enough room for them all.

Here in USA we have Federal, State ,and local jails. The federal slammers come in four basic models: Super slammer where unibomber etc are sent, Federal Pen the next most dangerous get sent, Medium Security moderate dangerous and minimum security where white collar criminals are sent. States tend to follow that pattern but are not this nice. My local county jail is almost as big as a Federal and is very deluxe
