Hello my fellow mylotters! This past weekend a good part of Chicago was under a major rainfall. We live in a basement apartment, and well we ended up getting some water in our family room, just in a small corner of the room, and we have carpet. Our landlord is awre and I know he will at some point replace the carpet and what not so we arent stuck with a mold infested situation..however, that wont be done overnight. Right now the carpet is basically dry, but there is still that musty odor, and probably we will still ge some amount of mold under there before he gets it taken care of. Does anyone know how to reduce the odor and/or help prevent or reduce the amount of mold we may get?

If you spread a lot of borax on it, after being sure it's entirely dry, and leave it there for about 2 to 3 days, you'll find that the odor is gone and the molds won't grow. Good luck!

Do you happen to know what combo of that and water that we would use. Meaning the amount. I tried to find your suggestion online and couldnt find it specifically for this use, but for similar ones, so I am just needing the "recipe" so to say...lol.

I did it with no water at all. That's why it has to sit there for a couple of days, at least. It absorbs the odors and the the leftover moisture. You can do the same thing with baking soda, too.

Sprinkle baking soda on it. It's cheap, safer than anything else and it will destroy the odor as well as most molds. Just sprinkle it on liberally and let it work into the carpet. Don't vacuum for full day, then if the odor hasn't totally left or if there's any sign of mold, reapply.
