Consumerism--let's buy everything we want and not think about the consequences..

I am being facetious, of course. But here's what I'm getting at--We all know people who just keep buying and buying and buying "stuff." They may have little houses, or they may have big houses. Either way, their houses are filled to the brim with "the newest thing" that everybody wants. And there's no way they can use all these items or take care of them--there just isn't enough time in the day. How do you feel about people simply spending money to obtain all the material goods that they want for no other reason than because they want them?
P.S. Don't get me wrong, I like to shop and have things also. I guess I just feel there are limits (like space, money, time to use items, etc.)to what we can realistically own and get "good" from in a lifetime.

Yes, I knew this lady that did that very thing, she was always buying stuff, stuff she didn't need. It was things that she just wanted because she could buy it. I couldn't believe what her daughter in law told me, she passed away about a month ago, and they had to go thru all her things. Her daughter in law said that when they were dividing her things between her, and the lady's daughters, they got to the last 15 or 20 items she said she had to stop, she couldn't take anymore, there was way too much stuff. Even now, they aren't finished, the lady had bought three houses in the town that we live in, and they are still full of stuff she had bought. She even built on two rooms to her house and they are full of stuff. I don't think she hardly used anything she bought, she just stored it up in her houses, but she did keep journals of everything she bought over the past years, kind of like an inventory list. I guess she just liked to shop, I don't think she had any limits to what she bought or thought she needed. Now its all left up to her family to figure out what to do with it all. I've seen some of it, and its not cheap things, fine china, expensive dishes and jewelry, and stuff like that.

This is quite a story, of this woman who owned 3 houses and filled them with a bunch of stuff that she bought and did not use. The most interesting part of your story, walijo2008, is that she kept the inventory list of all the items she purchased. I mean, what was the point in that? Well, she was a real shopper, that's for sure. Thank you for telling us this fascinating story. People sure are interesting...

Yes, she was a real shopper alright. Her daughter in law said, that the stuff she had wasn't just crammed into these houses, they were all put up very neat, stacked in closets and stuff like that, she was a real organized person. The list she kept were in white binders and she said they were on a shelf lining one whole wall, 50 yrs. worth of stuff she's bought. I couldn't believe it myself, I never knew anyone like that, she had in there what she paid for it, when, and where and how she felt when she bought it. She loved miniatures, she's got hundreds of miniature doll houses, all decorated with little miniature furniture and people in them, its something else to see, all expensive stuff too. My husband said that she just had so much money that she didn't know what to do with it. They said they still aren't finished looking through everything, I think they are going to end up having an estate sale.

we don't need to buy stuff we won't need,it is sometimes not right enough to own something we won't even use.in some degree, it is a kind of waste.we had better avoid these behavours,to save money and energy to some useful and meaning things, creating some good that can satisfy the needer.

Hello jzjqdkd. I agree that it's best not to buy items we don't need and won't use. We can save money and the earth by buying less. Even so, each person is entitled to have a good life and have things they want, I guess I'm talking about doing that in moderation.

Hello jillhill.
Yes, it is each person's own personal decision. I was trying to get at the idea of materialism and how that affects the community and the globe. Of course, it is to each his own. But now that we have the research regarding global warming, perhaps people might take a look at how everyone is affected by their choices. I always appreciate your responses. Take care.

Hi PearlGrace, It is a very materialistic world that we live in today. I go without until I have saved up for a certain item that is needed and I don't care what Mrs Jones next door has as I recently lived without carpet for over two years before I had saved enough to have the hall stairs loung and landing all done together. I got a new TV because the old one broke but if it still works I do not replace with the latest gadget at all. Don't get me wrong though I would love a laptop and the most up to date computer but there is so much more to life than these items. We have got a Wii which my son wanted and I used some of his Christmas and birthday money to get it but it only gets used about twice a week or when I first got an indoor bowling and pizza party with friends. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi ellie333. I think it's very important to buy things that bring us joy and that help us live contented lives. We should have what we want. I just think like you think--we don't have to be so materialistic and get EVERY SINGLE thing we want, simply because we can. Your Wii sounds really fun! I've got the laptop, but no Wii! Take care. And huggles.

pearlgrace I love to shop too ,but only for things I can
afford and really need.some women are shopaholics and cannot
stop shopping. they buy so much stuff they never even use
it then have fifty pairs of shoes and maybe can only wear
three or four. Nobody should been a lotof stuff they dont
need or use just to be shopping. this is a waste of time,
space and money. Better to leave some of that money in a
savingsaccount, much better.

Hey Hatley. Yes, I can window shop for hours and don't need to buy a single thing. But there are those who just want to shop and shop and shop. I'm with you, I'd rather have money in the bank any day than be shopping when I really don't need anything. Thanks and take care.
