Tuna Salad: Do you use anything special?

As I was putting together a tuna salad yesterday afternoon it occurred to me that there are so many different ways to make it. At the first opportunity I went to a site that I often use for recipes and found that there were many, many recipes for tuna salad. I usually make mine with mayo, pickle relish, boiled egg, chopped onion, and either minced bell pepper or celery. On the site I visited I saw many variations with ingredients I would never have thought to use in tuna salads such as cinnamon, curry powder, and a variety of fruit. My question for you is do you make tuna salad in the traditional way or do you use some surprising ingredients?

i make it like u do. sometimes i will add a little mustard & a little sugar. it gives it a little different taste. my grandmother use to put apples in hers but i didn't really care for them. i love tina fish especially if i have a fresh tomato to stuff it in.

I will add fresh diced tomatoes directly to my salad if I have them on hand, AL. I learned it from a friend's mother a long time ago.

that would be good. i love tomatoes. i don't like left over tuna & the only drawback to adding the tomatoes i would want to eat it all at one time & not have leftovers. lol

I usually use mayo, mustard, boiled eggs, sweet relish, salt and pepper to make mine. My sister uses everything I do but replaces the relish with chopped up black olives. She also puts a little bit of oil and vinegar in it as well. It taste okay I suppose but I like mine better.

I really do not add anything special to my tuna salad. I just use the tuna and add some miracle whip, onion and some dill pickle to mine. My husband likes boied eggs in his.

I can eat it without the boiled eggs, stephcjh, but I prefer it with them added.

Generally, I make tuna salad with chopped sweet pickles, chopped celery and Miracle Whip. We do, however, like it made with chopped dill pickles and ranch dressing.

Hmm...never tried it with either dill pickles or ranch dressing, newtondak. Sounds interesting.

I had started making it one day when I discovered that I had no mayo, and that was the next closest thing I had. We really liked it, and if you get the low-fat variety, it makes for a pretty healthy sandwich!

I've never made tuna salad not sure why but I do like to mix all those ingredients together and use it as a filling for sandwhiches.

I sometimes substitute lemon tahini salad dressing in mine in place of mayonnaise with some diced red onion, black olives and celery. The dressing gives it a little more zing than just mayonnaise, and it's healthier and lower in fat.

I normally do mine pretty much like you do. Every once in awhile I will take a pouch of tuna and mix it with some ranch dressing and lettuce and eat it on bread. It is an interesting change of pace. I do lots of things with chicken salad, but I am not to adventurous with tuna salad.

Another thing you can do with tuna is to make tuna patties - similar to salmon patties. Drain a can of chunk light tuna (I prefer the canned in water variety) and mix with 12 crushed saltines, a small amount of chopped onion, and an egg and mix together. Form into patties and fry in a small amount of oil or in a pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
