What features do you like for your timepiece?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions 4 years ago

I want to buy a wristwatch. I have not had one for awhile. I use the clocks wherever I am and my car digital clock. But sometimes I'm where there is no clock and at work, I'm always going to the grooming section to see their clock. It will take me some time to be able to afford a wristwatch, but I want one.

My husband hates wristwatches. When he has a clock, it's attached to his belt and/or in his pocket.

The features I want with my watch are underwater capable, since I shower and swim with it on, and either glows in the dark or a button to push that makes it light up. I want simple with numbers, not digital with 40 features. I bumped one one time and I had the temperature for three days before I could get the time back. I like my numbers a pretty good size, too. I don't need inside numbers for a 24 hour clock, but if it comes with it, I'll take it.

So what kind of timepiece do you like? What features do you like on it? Do you want digital or analog?

Well I usually just use my cell phone as my clock anymore. I guess that is sad to say. Because watches do make mice jewlery items. I don't know if it is a feature. But I had a watch once where the numbers were done as Roman numerals. I thought that was classy.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

I would say Roman Numerals are a feature. Yes, I have noticed people popping their cell phones when I ask them what time it is. Take care and thanks.

i too miss my wrist watch. i like one that is bigger on my wrist and fastens tight so its not moving around. i had one about 5 years ago. was interchangeable with a black, red, and green camo. was perfect! i like the basic ones with all the hour numbers on there. i like all the minutes to have markers too. i think i have to use my first mylot earnings on a new watch. i have been without one for almost a year and i still look at my wrist for the time and sometime i still try to adjust it on my arm..lol have a great day

You made me laugh, you even try to adjust it? That's wild. I'm afraid I'll ask people for the time after I get one. Thanks and take care.

I also don't like watches, I find they make me hot (go figure.) This has been the case for a number of years - like 15 or 20. I just use my cell phone as my clock if I dont' have anything else.

I know, that's more than a watch.

I don't know if you boycot walmart, but that's where we get the roomie's watches she prefers analog with large dials - but she's visually impaired after all.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

No, I don't boycott walmart, I don't use it any more than I have to, but I'm not boycotting it at the present time. I usually get my watches from Kmart. With my current finances, I need to find one at the Dollar store!

There was a time when I couldn't wear a watch, drove me crazy until I loosened them up. Also when I lived in a trailer with wall to wall carpeting, I couldn't keep one running with all the static electricity in my body.

I don't have a cell phone. That would be another bill per month that I can't afford. Even pre-pay would be a problem right now.

So your roomy has similar taste in watches as me. Thanks and take care

myLot reputation of 99/100. ElicBxn (24656)  4 years ago

Well, all the K-marts are gone here - we have Target and Walmart. I do know what you mean about dollar stores.

Yeah - well, at least the roomie has the excuse of being visually impaired.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

The Dollar stores here charge only a dollar. I have paid 24 dollars at Kmart in the past. But with all my money spoken for and then some for bills, I might be able to round up enough bottles if I could get one to work for a dollar store for a dollar. That's what I meant.

Unless I buy divided or bifocal glasses, I'm visually impaired for close-up, too. But those things made me seasick and I don't think they really helped my reading. With occular rosacea (rosacea in my eyes), it's hard to get good prescriptions for me because every day the swelling in my eyes is different. My Father had this plus diabetes. He also had 5 pairs of glasses. He used to look at the calendar in the AM and try on all the glasses. Whichever one he could see with the best that day was the one he wore. Some days his eyes would change by noon and he'd do the calendar eye test.

I'm not considered visually impaired because they can get my eyes to 20-20 with correction and one some days even 20-15 or even 15-15, but that is for a brief moment in time. They know this, they check my eyes every time and I could have had 5 pairs of glasses by now, too. I'm often 30-20 or 20-30 when I go in. Take care.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ElicBxn (24656)  4 years ago

I think the watch the roomie has cost about 10-12 at walmart

I haven't seen watches at the dollar stores around here, but I honestly haven't looked.

The dollar store thing, I was trying to make a joke, a few posts later, I don't think I succeeded.

Until you got to the non digital I would have recommended a casio G-shock as they are indestructible, which is what I need and look for in a watch. I'm just so bad at smacking watches against things by mistake or dropping them and I live in a very rainy country so need something at least semi waterproof.lol

Another thing I like and would look for is a alarm feature as it is so handy when on holiday as you don't need a travel clock so it's one less thing to pack or worry about.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

I wear the surface of the watch on the inside instead of the outside of my wrist. I tend to smack my outside wrist on lots of things and it damages the face of the watch a lot. So we both like the waterproofing feature. Thanks and take care.

You're in a good mood, aren't you? I suppose I could do digital if no fancy stuff and it met the rest of my requirements. Thanks and take care.

I have an Anne Klein bangle bracelet watch. It has a nice, large round face with white background, black hands, and big black numbers. I can see the time without putting my little reader glasses on. The bangle bracelet part is sterling silver. It opens and closes around my wrist with a hinge. I love it. If it ever breaks I will order another one exactly like it.

I have gotten many other watches over the years, and 2 or 3 of them are quite beautiful. However, the numbers and faces are so tiny, I cannot see the time on them anymore. So, I never, ever wear any of them. I don't really know the difference between digital or analog. My watch takes ones of those flat, round batteries, I think it's a CR2032 or something like that. I've got to have a watch for work, to make sure I don't go over on time during people's therapy sessions.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

What an excellent discription of your watch!

Analog is when you have the numbers painted on and the hands go around to tell the time. Digital is when dots light up to create numbers (digits) and there are no hands or painted numbers.

You like your numbers larger for the same reason I do. I like the face round and not oval, too. Oval faces confuse me and distort time for me for some strange reason. If I can't see the watch without glasses at night or if it distorts time, I won't wear it either.

Thank you very much for your reply and take care.

i am scared to buy a watch i bought a watch spent a lot of money on a watch and it was suppose to be 14 carat gold all of a sudden it started changing color and it got worse and worse to it back to the store they did not back there watch that they said was gold i have not bought a watch since because they flat out lied about this watch if i buy another one it be a cold day hell these jeweler lied.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

I buy cheap watches, around 24 dollars. They come with a money back guarantee in writing. I can't wear expensive ones, I'm too hard on them. Kmart stands by their watches in my area.

If I were to buy an expensive watch, I would ask around and find out who the real jewelers are in your area. We have reputable ones and shady ones also. If I had paid a lot of money for a watch (ever) and gotten burned like you did, I would be very upset, too. It would be a long time before I tried again. It's just that I'm outdoors a lot and I know the general time from the sun, but not very exact, so I need something that's with me unless I can find a really good outdoor clock and then I'd have to stop whatever I'm doing and go look at it.

Thanks for your caution on jewelers, I hope we've both helped someone today. Take care

I still go for the good old analog watch. I just admire the craftsmanship of the analog timepieces. My Seiko kinetic wristwatch has been with for almost ten years now and it's a trusty gadget and accessory to have. It doesn't have much features in it aside from its luminous "hands" which glows when you're in a dark place but I like principle behind how the watch works. The movement of your hand is what "fuels" the movement of the gears of the timepiece so no batteries needed. All you have to worry is when the gears would wear out. Given the quality of Seiko's craftsmanship, I'd say this watch would still have a long way to go.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

Movement wound watches are really cool. My Mother bought one for one of my brothers and unfortunately someone asked him to help them break up a cement foundation. The watch ended up being "toast" after hours of doing that. She had paid a lot of money for it, and she was upset. After that, she only bought cheaper watches for us. Unfortunately, by the end of one year, I need a new face glass (I believe they are called crystals, maybe) because mine is all scratched up. I even wear my watch with the face on the inside of my arm to try to protect it and it only slows the scratching down. We're very hard on watches. I work cutting brush and bushes that include thorns and pickers at my house. I'm trying to reclaim an overgrown mess that used to be a garden.

Every time I watch Antique Roadshow on TV, they seem to have one antique timepiece. Often it is a clock, but sometimes it is an absolutely beatiful analog pocketwatch. The craftmanship is amazing. Especially in the 1800s and before. They really worked hard to make a masterpiece.

I'm very glad that your watch has a long way to go. I buy such cheap ones that every month past a year, I'm excited aboutit still working. I bet your Seiko will last a long, long time. I wish my lifestyle went better with a watch. I find movement wound watches facinating.

When my husband retires, he wants to build analog clocks as one of the many things he will do in his workshop. Thank you very, very much for replying. Take care

I like a big clear face so it is easy to see but not too many features as such but I being a female really likes the sparkly ones with a bit of bling around the face...

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

Bling is cool, bling is fun. So do you like diamond bling, glitter bling, etc?

myLot reputation of 99/100. lilaclady (22666)  4 years ago

Oh diamond bling would be lovely but i settle for glitter bling..lol.

If I was your Fairy Godmother, I'd grant you a diamond bling watch and ring, and necklance and they'd all match. Have to keep up with the other Fairy Godmothers.

I only want a watch that's big enough to tell time. If possible, it should have a digital panel somewhere too just in case I read the hands incorrectly. Nowadays, many watches also serve to make a statement. There are so many fashionable watches out there that I'm always tempted to buy the ones the sparkle and look good over the ones that are plain and dull. But I guess at the end of the day I just want a watch that's reliable enough. It should be water resistant and made by a reliable company. I'd love to own an IWC or something similar just so that it has a good resale value.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 2 out of 176 in sharing opinions  4 years ago

I would love a watch that would be a good investment, too. But I am very, very hard on watches. I scratch the heck out of the glass on the surface of the watch, esp. if I wear one like everyone else. I tend to wear mine on my wrist with the face underneath the palm of my hand and if I'm wearing a long sleeve shirt, underneath it to protect it for as long as I can. At the end of the day, I just want a watch that tells time, too. Look at it this way, we don't have to worry about someone sticking a gun in our faces to steal a big name brand watch when we have something only worth looking at for time. Thanks and take care.
