Oh no!!! the electricity is too expensive. We only used it for emergency but for the whole duration of the cold days, we never use electric heaters all the time. It would kill our budget for electric bills. My mylot earnings would not be enough to pay the bills. Am sure those of you who have lots of earnings can use this heaters when you are in your desk top typing. But It would be wise enough to save all we can in this time of crisis. Just curious to hear your way of saving this cold winter days.

Well we have petrol heaters in the building I live but if its a cold day and we are out of petrol, since we are all college students in this building we might use some electric heaters for some time to save money that would be more (nowdays) for petrol... In my hometown at home we use gas heating which doesn't need refueling so we don't use electric heaters there...

Oh!! that is cool.. You are lucky to have a house built in like that. We are living in an old house built in 1960's I think? we are just renting it anyway.

well I think it's one of the two cheaper ways for heat... the other is using some pipes under your house floor and you get hot water (+hot water to use it for bath) from an electricity provider and at least in Greece costs around 30-40 euros (around 60USD) extra in the electricity bill... But the pipes should be placed when the house is build and I think its quite expensive but it gets its money back in a period of time... Well don't know the exact name of this way of heating in English :P

The cold winter climate at my place is most effective for about one month only between December and January and the temperature never goes below 10 degrees celcius. So, no acute necessity for heater here in winter. Thanks for your discussion!

Please find from my profile that I am from India and that too the eastern state 'Orissa'. So I have a tropical climate here and average annual temperature is 29 degrees celcious with about 19 degrees variation in both sides! Here, summer is more painful than winter and people are affected often by fatal sun-strokes in summer season! Winter is the most enjoyable among seasons here in all respect. Thanks for your nice comments!

i use electric heaters because all of my utilities are included in my rent. I don't get an electric bill.... and gas is way too expensive. I'd rather have the electric bill than the gas bill

wow!! you are lucky that your utility expenses are covered in your rent. Ours is not. We have to pay separately. We don;t know also how much is the gas now for heater.. am sure it is so high than last year. Stay warm..

We use an electric heater in the kitchen, we use the fireplace, but our house is big and drafty, so the back part of the house doesn't get that warm, so I have to run a heater in the kitchen area so maybe some of the heat will go towards the bedrooms. They can use alot of electricity if you use it all the time.

oh!!! so aside from using fireplace using wood, you also use electricity? I thought all the heat of the wood stove can give you heat in your house? well, anyway, we do use electricity also sometimes in the dining room..to make our feet warm while we are eating.

Winter is not cold here. It is October and yet our temperatures are still in the 80s and sometimes 90s. It will get a little cold, but not enough to need heat really. We'll just keep the air conditioner off and it'll be fine, but right now, we are still using the AC. Here it's only ever really cold in February though.

We have an all-electric home. Several years ago, we put gas logs in our fireplace in our den. We use them more than turning up the heat. Usually, a tank of gas will last us all winter, and it's already paid for, which is good. Our light bills are kept down because we usually shut off the bedrooms and living room and dining room when we turn on the gas logs. We would never use electric heaters. They would eat us out of house and home.

Electric heat isn't as warm as we like it. And we got tired of bringing in wood to have a fire - too messy. So we decided after many years to install the logs. And we haven't regretted it at all. Our house can be toast warm!

Hi Bebs, Yea, we are using electric heaters and it will be my second winter here and I am like you, I don't like this cold weather! We want to save of course but this season, I guess hubby set his mind already that we are having an expensive bill! I am hoping I will learn something how to save some, since it's not good to imagine those money spend only for the bills!

Hi Che, yea, I'm sure this winter is more expensive than last year. The oil price for heating keeps on increasing every year. This year might be worst. Maybe we have to buy at least few gallons for emergency use and use our electric heaters once in a while. We have lots of wood prepared for this winter, so, it would help to cut off our expenses for oil and electricity. Have a nice day.

Hello Bebs. I use electric heater to keep me warm when the weather is too cold, but I use it only when I use the computer, otherwise I don't use it at home.

There is only electric heater in our sleeping room. That's why we need to use it when the weather is getting colder. But we don't turn it on all night long. Only warm the room before we sleep and then turn it off when we will go to bed.

wow!! would the heat stand until the morning? how does it feel in the middle of the night? I could imagine that, when I used socks to warm my feet and used thick clothing when I sleep.

Here in KY electricity is still relatively cheap. We have a heat pump which is backed up by an electric heater if it gets too cold. We had to turn it on today for the very first time. Which is funny because day before yesterday we all still had shorts and T-shirt on. It sure got cold quickly this year.

no i dont think so there are electric heaters in my house, the heaters here run on gas and i tell you even this expensive for us. last year when we were new to the house and germany i was not knowing more about it and we use to keep the heaters on all the time but at the year end we recieved my bill and and we have to increase our limit and have to pay more and it was just a shocj for us. but it is really cold in my house and we need heaters everytime. but now this year i am tryig to reduce the usage with more of warm clothings at home too and also i am just using the heater wherever i am and hence trying to reduce my bills let me see how far i can save.

oh!! that's awful when you pay more than you expected. yea, this time of year, we must be wise in using our electricity. That is why we used logs/wood to heat the house because of the high prize of gas now for heating, we can't afford it anymore. It will consume our budget.

We don't use heaters in our house because we have central heat and it heats the whole house. We do have a heater in the shed tho that we used last year for our dogs when it was cold but this year since we only have the one dog, she will be coming in the house when it gets cold. We also use the heater in the garage when we work out there.

I use electric heaters. They are very convenient to put in the bathroom on cold mornings before the kids take a bath. They are no more expensive for us to run than the gas heat.

yes, electric heaters are very convenient but for us, it is too expensive if we used it often. We have small electric heaters that we can take it anywhere we are in the house but we just used it for emergency use.. or like few minutes only when it is really necessary.

We have always heated our home with electric and then about 5 years ago we went to th gas ventless wall heaters. This year we are back to electric due to the rise in oil prices. It's not cheap by any means but it is cheaper than gas right now! Stay Warm this winter!

You might want to do the math again on this. If you heat your home with gas or oil, a portable electric heater may save you money. If you stay pretty much in one room and that room can be closed off from the rest of the house, you can turn the heat down and use an electric heater to warm just the one room to a comfort level. It can save you money that way.

That is true, kerosene heater is less expensive than electric heaters but if we can use wood that is a lot cheaper or maybe no expenses at all. If we have logs we can just cut it and our oil expenses and electricity bills were saved.

Our house is heated by fuel oil which does a pretty good job. It doesn't keep my sons' room very warm though when it is really cold out so in the evenings and while they sleep we have a little space heater in there for them. That way we don't have to have the heat cranked way up in the rest of the house. If our room is chilly we just use our electric blanket for extra warmth and that has a setting to turn off on it's own after a few hours to save energy. When the boys get older we will get them blankets like that too so we won't have to use the heater in their room for them.

We never have electric blankets.. Good that I am living in a place where not so chilly like other states. We never experience temperatures below Zero. Our lowest temp experience is just 7-10 degrees. But for me it's too cold already. I heard that there are State which has below Zero degrees. That is awful.

When i got here in US it was already Spring but it seemed to be winter still. They said it was the longest winter. Because I am not used in a very cold weather our heater is one 24/7. I am not sure about the bill that my hubby paid every month. Now its fall and winter next, for sure our heater will be on 24/7 again. I was concerned about the bill too but my hubby said it doesn't matter as long as I am comfortable while inside our house and not just hide under our comforter..hehe.

In my room, there is no installation so whatever the temperature is outside it's just about that inside. So during the winter we have the heater on and out electric heater. The bill is higher but at least we are warm.

We do use portable electric heaters. Because this house is 40 years old, we only have 1 gas heater- and that's attached to the wall in the bathroom. So, the only way to heat this old home is to use electric heaters. Not only are the new ones safer, they heat twice as fast as any gas would. Plus, most of the new ones help cut electric bills in half. When you have gas escaping through tiny places in the house, it will take more to heat up the house- and that means a high electric bill.
