Sarah and the Supremes

In the latest installment of Katie Couric's interview with Sarah Palin, Katie asked Sarah besides Roe V Wade, what other Supreme Court decisions she had disagreed with. She gave a rather long, drawn-out answer in which she named one Supreme Court decision - Roe V Wade!
Initially I thought I shouldn't make too much of this; I mean, while there have been many famous Supreme Court decisions that most of us probably learned about in school, I could see myself drawing a blank if I were asked a question like this out of the blue on nation television. Granted, while I did wait by my phone for the call from Barack Obama that never came, I'm not running for Vice President of the United States, but what the heck - even as Governor of Alaska, what effect did anything the Supreme Court did really have on Sarah Palin? I first thought of Bush V Gore, but then I remembered the keyword "disagree", which she probably didn't. So, what's the big deal, what Supreme Court decisions would she have even given a thought to...

Governor Reacts to Supreme Court’s Decision to Hear Appeal
October 29, 2007, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today expressed disappointment with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to rule on the legality of Exxon Mobil’s appeal of the $2.5 billion damages award from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound.
It was like a kick in Alaskans’ collective gut, said Governor Palin upon hearing of the decision.
“It seems to be a case of justice delayed is justice denied,” said Governor Palin. “I believe this has gone on too long. We know that our price of fish and our coastal communities still have not recovered. I think we should invite the Exxon personnel to kick over the rocks on our beaches in Cordova and see first-hand the devastating effects of the worst oil spill in our history.”
The Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into Prince William Sound in 1989 when the tanker hit a reef. Hundreds of thousands of seabirds and marine animals died as the crude oil spread throughout the sound, and the region's fisheries were financially devastated.
“We have had 6,000 victims who have passed away who have never seen any real justice,” said Cordova Mayor Tim Joyce. “The spill tore the social fabric out of this community.” The case is expected to be heard in the spring.

Hmmm...it happened in her state of Alaska while she was Governor, she spoke of it publicly and it only happened less than a year ago... Am I overreacting here or is this a real, honest to goodness gaffe?

Yeah, she has her share of gaffes. I'm glad some of the negatives are coming out, hopefully it ends the whole celebrity status thing. I didn't like it with Obama and I certainly don't want it for the politicians I support.

When I first heard that question I couldn't think of a single Supreme Court decision period. I'm an educated person. I minored in law and I know of many supreme court decisions that I do and don't agree with. When I heard that question I really drew a blank so I can't blame her at all. It's just not one of those things that I keep in the forefront of my memory since it doesn't come up well... ever really until now.

Taskr, I think I've come to know you well enough and to know enough about you to know you're not someone who would impulsively answer a question without giving any thought to it and I honestly believe if you were in Palin's shoes you'd have remembered that case. It was less than a year ago and she obviously had strong feelings about it at the time.
However, I'd be quite willing to give her a pass since I can certainly relate to someone drawing a complete blank about something the know they should know about if she'd have just said that. I've quite frequently when discussing something or asked a question said straight out that I'd gone blank, that it was something on the tip of my tongue. By the way Sarah rather characteristically babbled on without answering Katie's question I have the feeling she just may have been thinking, "I KNOW that, I have to remember that case..." but it escaped her at that moment. She should have just said so, then when she thought of it or heard it pointed out in the media she could have made a statement the first chance she got about it. She could have made fun of herself a bit like lots of us do all the time and I don't think that would have made anyone think less of her.

I won't disagree with you that there are those from both parties who will take any opportunity to bash the other side. I'm glad you're not one of them but do I ever wish you'd give some pointers to Kennyrose...lol! What a piece of work!

Annie, people are just looking for reasons to think less of her. Any failure to answer that question properly would have given such a reason. You may have appreciated such a response from her, but those looking to bash her would have seized on any opportunity.

LOL I didn't even think of that one because there are so many other "famous" cases that I figured everyone knew about. I'm thinking that I read to much.

I didn't think of it either, Zephyr, and I also didn't think of all the ones I saw you write about in other posts, but neither of us are running for V.P nor are we the governor of a state where such an important case had originated. Also, as I told Taskr, she could have admitted to drawing a blank. That way she may have endeared herself even more to some of her fans and she wouldn't have done
much damage with her detractors.

Yeah saying she was drawing a blank would have been fine but, she went to school to be a reporter she of all people should know how to handle the press.
