Do you believe in destiny or freewill? What about dreams that come true?

Over the past year I have had some very disturbing dreams that have come true. I don't want to get into any details of what they were and how they came true but they did. Some of the dreams were so far fetched I thought there is no way this is going to happen only to find out that yes it did happen. It brings into mind the question does free will exist and if so much how much of it do we really have? Is there certain things that just are destined to happen and there is nothing we can do about it. It makes me wonder if these things happened because I made them happen because of my own fears or if it was just my subconscious telling me what my conscious mind didn't want to admit. In either case it made me wonder what good would it do anyone to know if something was going to happen if you cant change it from happening? Have you had any similar experiences like this? What are your thoughts on this?

I don't know if the page I recommend to you will be useful or not. But it was mighty useful for me. It is basically a transliteration of a dialogue between a Hindu religious Head(By the way the H.H in the article stands for His Holiness not by Hindu Head
) and a Disciple. You can check it out at
http://www.advaita-vedanta.org/articles/The_Riddle_of_Fate_and_Free.htm
If you don't believe in reincarnation, maybe you might have some trouble understanding it. But if you do check it out, tell me what you think of it.

Very interesting subject, setting aside reincarnation, The dreams might just be my subconscious mind showing me the results of what I have done in the past and how it is going to be manifested. So my freewill is do I keep doing the same things or do I change to have a different future past the one that is to come by my previous actions. I will have to think more on this concept. Thank you very much for your reply.

Hi there. Very rarely do I have dreams actually come true because mine are just too farfetched. However, I'm sure I've had at least a couple come true in my lifetime. I'm sure they could come true depending on how down-to-earth they were. Without knowing your situation (what kind of dreams actually came true for you), it's hard to determine what actually happened there. I don't really believe in destiny other than the fact that we choose our own. Every person chooses his and her own because we have complete free will. We've been given this gift of being able to choose to whatever extent we want. What we choose (using our free will) determines our destiny. I don't think there are predetermined things that are destined to happen as you mentioned. I believe God sees all things and already knows what going to happen, but He's given us free will to choose what we will do. He allows us to live our lives how we want and doesn't try to control them. He knew your dreams were going to come true, but perhaps it was because of something that you chose in your own life. (Once again, it's hard to determine since I don't know the exact situation.) God wouldn't put His hands on our lives to control them because that would completely spoil free will. I hope that makes sense. Good discussion. It's nice to think deep sometimes. Your post definitely helped. I hope you find the answers you're looking for. Take care.

Thank you for the reply. Still it seems to me if something happens or is going to happen than to what extent do we really have free will other than how we handle it.

I wonder the same thing at times. I have to ask myself, "What could I have done to prevent this?" Or "What can I do to cause this to happen?" I think what we're aiming at here is, how can we control our surroundings and how can we say what goes? Of course, we wouldn't want to do this for everything, but I definitely understand your ponderings. Thanks for the comment.

I believe in 'free-will' but not as a total free-will.. after all we don't choose where we are born, etc.. I think our life and all life is made up of choices.. our own and all choices made all through time before us.. The bible does say that some are destined to find the rescue of Christ in this life.. and some are not! I think God can 'destine' some things in our life.. for his purposes, or in answer to someone's prayers, or our own.. But I don't really see our life as being planned out in advance by God (or ourselves).. What I believe is that the creator could see all possibilities, of all things, from the 'beginning', then he set out to do all things in order to bring about the best possible 'end' result.. When people followed 'the gods' it seemed there was a lot of belief in human destinies being planned out by 'the gods' or maybe just one of them.. A lot of times, those destinies seemed a bit painful, whether it was a great conqueror inflicting pain, or some sad irony that seemed to bite a more common person..
- I do however believe in dreams! As you've said as a putting of things together in our subconscious or even warnings from our sub conscious.. I also think we have what I think of as high spiritual dreams, which have a deep spiritual message, or even ones that are from God... I also fancy myself a bit of a dream interpreter and will sometimes go on Yahoo Answers and see if there are any dreams being asked to be interpreted and spend a fun day doing that..

...anytime I happen to write 'free-will' I always have to put the ' ' marks around them.. because there really is not free-will! as there's too many interrelated factors.. or that is to say our lives intersect with so many others, including not only the line of lives before us, but all of human history. I think it would be impossible to have total free will. What we think of as 'free-will' is likely just the ability to make choices.. But in this world of imperfection, 'free-will' itself is imperfect..

Thank you for the reply, I do have to say you are right about the outside factors we might choose the right thing to do every time but with all the other factors outside of that it doesn't mean that it will be the best thing.

We decide our destiny before we are born into each life....Free will always exists and its up to us to NOT see it as so black and white since it isnt and it IS connected to our destiny...Dreams..well thats a topic all its own..and yes I've had many a dream that has come true but every dream I have and remember is connected to my life be it a solution to a current situation or a warning or mental note of something to come in the future..thats what MOST (but not all) dreams really are about...its our deeper us helping our waking us if that makes sense.

My sister believes the same thing that we decide our destiny before we are born, or at least in what phase of our life we will have to deal hardship the beginning the middle or the end. Thanks for the reply.
