Hi everyone! Early this morning when me and my dogs are having our usual walk, my pets stopped by an empty block to do their business. I was hearing like puppies continuously barking and whining. And then I heard a voice of a lady shouting and telling the dog to stop and keep quiet. Then suddenly there was a loud sound like a hitting sound and then the dog would cry louder every hit sound I hear. I have the feeling that the dog was being hit so I tried to look where it came from and then I saw a lady inside their laundry yard looking down and hitting something with a broom stick. I know she was hitting the poor dog. I felt anger inside me and rage that somehow I wanted to talk to the lady and tell her to stop it but I can't just intrude into some other's business so I just stood there and stared at the lady. I was hoping that she'd see me staring and get embarrassed with what she's doing with the dog. My hopes were answered and she saw me staring so she stopped. I guess she was embarrassed. Hitting animals is totally wrong. Especially if they're our pets. We don't care for them and feed them just to hit them at some point. I feel sad for animals whose abused by their owners and I hate people who hits their pets. We can't help it if sometimes our pets gets stubborn or barks a lot. Maybe they need something so we just have to attend to them in a patient manner. I have never hit my dog. I love them like my kids. How about you guys? If you saw someone hitting their pet what will you do? What would you feel?

I have tapped my pet on the butt or on the nose but to take a broom and hit the pet. That is nasty. If I saw someone hitting their pet with a broom I would call the spca. The poor dog does not need to suffer. You know that this probably is not the first or last time. So there would have to be a permanent stop to it.

Sadly fellow lotter there is no spca in our country. I am a member of a kennel club and that is one wish we would like to have for the benefit of animals here. We notice that there is no definite law for the welfare of animals in my country. Well none that we really no of.

I never hit my pet. Hitting pat is really bad thing to do. Having pet means responsibility. Pet to to be care and love. If want to hit pet, then better don't have pet. I really don't like people hitting their pet. They are so bad people. They should be punished for doing that.

I agree with you that having a pet is big responsibility. It's the same responsibility of having a child but I think its much harder than taking care of kids. I don't know if in my country there are laws against animal brutality or abuse. I know in some countries people gets jailed for doing such things. Have a nice day!

I rarely hit Benji. He likes to go for walks but he'll find a squirrel and then he's deaf. So I'm running after him while he tries to climb trees. :) The most I'll do is say 'No Benji No', 'That's Bad, Don't Do That No More' or just give him the silent treatment. He knows when he's not getting attention he'll behave. The only time I can think of hitting him is when he tries to hump visitors. He'll be in an uncontrollable urge and you just have to slap his behind to remind him to move it. As for seeing the mistreatment of pets, I'll just do what you did hopefully, the person who punishes will ease down a bit. It's just hard to tell someone what to do when you don't know how their pet is and/or how they've been trained.

i used to have a dog in the past and i never have the heart to hit her... she is a pomenarian dog and no matter how annoying is she, i will never hit her... it is just so wrong to do that... like you say, a pet is still a living thing and they have emotions too... so it is just so wrong to hit a pet no matter how annoying they are... take care and have a nice day...

I don't tend to hit my pet. Occasionally, I'll swat at him with the remote, but I won't actually hit him. It's more just to startle him out of what he was doing. Often this happens when I have salad. He's obsessed with lettuce for some reason and sometimes he has trouble controlling himself when I'm eating it. I wish he would figure out that if he was a good boy I would give him some. The one time I actually did hit him was an emergency. He was trying to eat through the wires on my modem. I figured it's better that I hit him and he stop than he get electrocuted. He was so startled by this turn of events that he stopped doing what he was doing and didn't bother the modem for the rest of the evening. The next day I had the wires tapped down so he couldn't get at them. He was mad at me for a few days afterwords but got over it.

Hello iskayz, I did hit our pet dog just once for he kept on barking that night just like he saw a ghost and our elders told us that once the dog will bark that way that is one sign that somebody will die. So when I heard him bark like that I told him to stop for two times and when he did not stop I hit him for the main reason that by merely hitting him I might stop that bad saying. I felt so sorry after hurting him but I need to stop him from doing it.I love our pet, I kept in playing with him and everytime I arrive from work he is coming to me at once no matter what he is doing. Good thing he did not bark that way anymore. Maybe he doesn't like to get hurt too.

I think it's not good to hit pets, but maybe the lady in your story was just having a very bad day and couldn't help but do that to her pet because maybe the barking just makes the irritation worst. Anyhow, yes it's not good to hit pets, but like everyone else we are all human and we can't always control ourselves. But if that's a usual incident (hitting the pet) then that's no longer excusable. I can't hit my pet because I have a pet fish. Hahaha.. Anyhow, we have dogs at home and sometimes I can't help but hit one of them most specially if they don't stop whining in the wee hours of the morning regardless what I have done and given them. Sometimes you just really have to discipline your pet like you discipline your kid, you can't always be too soft on them because they'll just end up spoiled.

Oh gosh that is awful what that lady does to her dog. It makes me so sick to my stomach when people abuse animals. We get pets to love and care for them and boond with them not hurt them! I don't hit my dog ever. I usually just will raise my voice in a stern way when he has done something wrong, not yelling just the "I mean business" voice. But sometimes even then I feel bad because he will get all hurt looking and go hide. So then I cave and give him lots of love. So, I could never imagine actually causing physical harm to my pet. People like that should be punished!!!

I have never hit my pet. I still remember when my family had a dog when I was 10 years old, I believe I am the only one who don't hit it because I was very kind. But it often bit me and scratched in spite of my kindness. Now I believe proper punishment to the pet is necessary because it is not intelligent enough.
