They took my arts and crafts shows off DIY!  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 13 out of 4,081 in watching television 4 years ago

Why is it, if I like something, they take it off TV? I know I like unusual things, but this is ridiculous! Christmas is coming and people need to learn crafts in this economy. I was watching Creative Juices, Carol Duval, From Junky to Funky, and one where they search the US to find crafters. There was another one, too, only on Fridays, this woman and a friend had a workshop and they made all kinds of stuff. Every day between 12 noon and 2pm Eastern Time, I watched craft shows. Now only Martha Stewart Living is still one. That was such a beautiful couple of hours of my life every day! I have a rough time learning from books. There is always a discription I don't understand and half of the still life pictures aren't all that seeable. These shows were great! I could see how they did things. I could see if I had the skills and materials to start a project.

Please respond to any of the following: Have they taken any shows off TV that you liked? Do you watch craft shows or DIY? Have you learned anything from a TV show that worked well in real life for you? Are there any other craft shows that I might be able to watch? Have you watched craft videos? Are there any good craft videos or DVDs out there? Thanks and take care

there are a lot of craft videos on youtube that you could probably watch. we dont get craft shows like that up here - i do remember watching carol on tv but we do get martha up here but her shows are mostly cooking. any craft ideas i get are from books (from the library) or from websites that sell stuff.

I wish when I read books, I could get it, but I can't. I got a horrible virus from Utube that pretty much crashed my system from a link from a discussion here. So I'm not crazy about going to them again. If I was sure I wouldn't get creamed, I would go there. I understand there are lots of wonderful things there. Thanks and take care. Our library might have how to videos or DVDS, hadn't thought of that until just now. Thanks and take care.

I would occasionally watch crafts on DIY. I also learn much better by seeing a new project actually done. To read and then follow the ideas can very often lose me in the shuffle. Have you tried to email the programming coordinator for the programs in question and see what's going on or if new programs will be added before Christmas? Might be worth the effort, ya know.

I could try. I was hoping other people were watching some of them and would write, too.. The more people, the more likely they are to put at least one more back on. Thanks and take care.

Ironically it was a holiday video where I got my idea to make an owl out of a pine cone for Arbor Day.. On these same videos I have made Rosh Hashanah cards and a banner for Passover..But that is about it, other crafts I do I ever get ideas from someone else or I make my own up or even find some sites that have many suggestions for crafts..

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 13 out of 4,081 in watching television  4 years ago

I've made a few crafts up, but they tend to not hold together well or not work out.

I found a bunch of how to videos on Ebay including playing Native American flute and making glass beads, complete kit. Those would be awesome, but I can't afford them. I'll have to be content with the soap one I got. Also hope I get the bid on the circle knitting video. I figured out how to do the hats, but everything else I try comes out weird. Thanks and take care.

Videos!!! When you said that, it reminded me of this site I used back when I had sound..It is http://www.expertvillage.com/ and you can search throughout this site and find many things to help you do just about anything..I found this site about 1 1/2 years ago looking for ways to teach my son to not be afraid to go under water. And the video was so good, I was able to not only teach him to be not afraid, but to do some swimming strokes and now he is an absolute fish..I love this site and happy I was able to find it again..I am positive it also had "how to" crafts on there too..

I didn't see this just now. I wonder why it didn't come up before. Is this site safe? Utube put a virus into my computer. If it has how tos, it could really, really be cool. Thanks and take care.

You got a virus from youtube?? shocked Wow, wonder if that was why our computer messed up...(don't tell my husband, or when we do get sound, he won't allow youtube or will blame me if the computer does anything strange)

Anyways, I don't know how to check if it is safe or not.. I used it like I said about a year and a half ago to teach my son to swim..Then I used it again for a couple of months and then forgot about it..My computer broke down way over a year from when I stopped going there, so I assume it is safe..

Thanks for the BR, did you find out if this site was safe or not? I hope it is, because other than viewing some videos I saved, I am going back there as soon as I get a computer with sound..

Sorry you are so frustrated about your shows being taken off the tv. I hate when that happens.

I used to watch DIY channel quite a bit but I haven't been watching it recently. I like the knitting show, I can't remember what it's called right at this moment. Vicki Howell is the "Hostess Knitter". I don't know if it's still on or not.

I can't think of other craft shows to watch because I don't tune in to them that much. But I used to love Junky to Funky. The people on that show were so creative!

I've never watched a craft video, well, other than over the internet to watch someone do a knit stitch that I wanted to review.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 13 out of 4,081 in watching television  4 years ago

I really loved Junky to Funky because it was like my family on steroids with more training and ability (except one of my brothers, he has the ability, needs more training and the money to make the alterations).

I saw one knitting show one time. It was about knitting dog hair. This lady was on to promote her book. We were just flipping through the channels. Labradoodles have the best followed by Goldendoodles for making yarn from dogs as far as I can see from working PetSmart. Sometimes I'd like to ask the PetSmart employees what is done with the hair the grooming department clips off the dogs. If they just throw it away, maybe they would give it to me or provide it for a fee to me. That would help PetSmart and me both. I used to clean wool for baby quilts with hypoallergetic soaps. Yarn has gone up in price. But I don't know how to spin. I've tried, but I need way more practice.

I fear I won't have this job much longer. The Canadians, only 2 or 3 buy my food because they can't get it in their Province, it's in 4 out of 10 provinces, just not the one above my start.

I will be buying some how to DVDs from ebay. I have one coming in the mail about making soap. Can't wait. People have to stay warm and people have to keep clean. If I stick to things like people have to eat, maybe, just maybe, one day I'll find my niche. Probably when I retire. 4 more years to go. Sorry to go on and on. I'm just thinking with my typing fingers. For some reason, you get my thinking cap going. Take care

That should be State, not start.

myLot reputation of 100/100. PearlGrace (1880)   ranked 1,065 out of 4,081 in watching television  4 years ago

I've never heard of knitting with dog hair in my entire life! That is so weird. I can't imagine spinning dog hair together to make yarn to knit with. Now that's interesting.

Gosh I hate to hear you might get laid off again. It can be frustrating when you are trying to find the right kind of work that fits you. Plus, it needs to pay off financially, too.

I have made soap before but it wasn't complicated or anything. I've got some soap molds. All I do is buy the big chunks of soap, melt them down and poor the melted soap into the molds. Then, after they cool, pop them out. I'm sure there are other methods that are much more complicated. I usually put a drop of fragrance in also.

Good luck on finding your niche. You've still got 4 whole years to do it. Glad I can help you get that thinking cap on.

I wish I had known about the dog hair knitting when my kid brother had the dog with the nicest fur. It was like touching silk. It was a heinz 57 dog, but part of it was collie and it had the longest and thickest hair I've ever seen on a dog, I think it was part huskey, too. It had three colors naturally, but they had different tones like a black that faded to a gray with a reddish brown that faded to just a light brown and white. It was about 50lb dog so it had a ton of fur. I could have really gone to town with that fur. In the spring, that dog's hair came out in handfulls.

Soap: many ways to do it including: starting from scratch-fat from meat and ashes from wood for the fat and lye, bottled oil (or raised and pressed sunflower oil, etc) and a bottle of lye from the store. As well as the reheating and reforming that you're talking about.

I checked ebay for more craft videos. Making your own glass beads, then I found some playing instruments ones and clicked on playing Native American Flute and another one on playing the dulcimer. Take care

I use the lint from my dryer to make paper, and its full of dog hair...
nice clean dog hair that strengthens the paper and looks pretty cool.
Another instance of using EVERYTHING... and why not? Frugality is so
necessary now!

Alamode, Very cool and very true! There was someplace that used to make decorative balls from lint. That really is using everything. Thanks and take care.

I've been fuming about this for 2 weeks... I watched all of those shows
too, especially Carol Duvall. They really taught how to do the serious
crafts. I now have a few shows on PBSHD, but they aren't the same, so I
don't bother turning on the TV until evening.
I hope they realize soon that they've shot themselves in the foot... at
least 6 of my friends have also stopped tuning in, and thats just people
immediately around me. Imagine whats happening in the whole country!
At least we can still go to the website and get the designs and all of
the instructions... thats something. I just hope they change their minds!

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7228)   ranked 13 out of 4,081 in watching television  4 years ago

Alamode, you're back!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank goodness. All my friends, especially my really devoted ones are special, but you have your own special spark and I feel a sisterly kinship toward you (I guess, I don't have any sisters, so I adopt them) that I really miss. Feel free to PM me and I hope you're ok.

Back to the topic at hand. Above, one of my friends had a good suggestion, let's write them. They must have something on their website where we can write to them. Maybe it's a seasonal thing. Lots of people are getting ready for fall and I noticed that one of the replacements is home repair. I know we're getting ready for winter here. Wonder if they just do crafts in summer and maybe they will return during the winter. Thanks for your reply and take care.
