You will not believe what's happening at my house!!!

If anyone had ever mentioned that this would ever take place at the edge of our land, I would have told them 'no way'! We have watched the property next door, within throwing distance of our house, being cleaned off for the past 6 weeks or so. We have tried to find out what was going up. We thought maybe someone was building a house. Well, we've been lied to over and over and over again! So on Tuesday night, after a huge company with all their machines started cleaning off that 5 3/4 acres (half of which runs behind our house and connected to our acreage at the end), we decided to drive down the road and see what was going on. They had a huge bonfire and my husband pulled up and went down to talk to the men. What he learned shocked us to the core!! See, we live in one county, and our land borders with the next county. The next county has a law that they can build BINGO HALLS - doesn't matter where unless it's in one big city which is prohibited. NO ZONING Laws FOR the small communities. Well, we live in a small community and the acreage they bought is in the next county - nobody within a mile or so on the other side. We had tried to buy the property years ago and the lady that owned it said we would have first chance at it. She lied! She either gave or sold it to her daughter and her husband who live in another county, miles away from what is going on, so it's no concern to them. They sold it to some people who are into gambling. They secretly went about doing all this behind our backs to get a license to build this HUGE BINGO HALL (80 feet long and 40 feet wide). In fact, the guy told my husband that they kept it secret until they got it ready because they didn't want to 'upset the neighborhood'! WELL, they have made the neighborhood mad and there isn't much we can do. Our land and nice brick home will go WAY DOWN in value. We'll never be able to get anything for it. It won't be worth much to our two children when we die. This was their inheritance - the house and 65 acres of land. We just made a mistake of building on the small end of our property, I suppose. But it angers me to think that people like these gamblers love money so much that they forget there are people out there that don't gamble and have no use for a gambling hall being next door. This area here has only a 2 lane road leading between 2 four lane highways, one of them an interstate. We live 7 miles from the interstate and the guy told my husband that's the reason they are building here, to draw the traffic off the interstate. Also, the blinking BINGO lights and all the lights from the parking lot will be a nuisance. IN FACT, the parking lot will be right behind our house since the property is a long section of land and it goes behind our house and connects to our other land. They have no other place to park. This angers me considering my bedroom is on the back side of the house and our property line here at the corner of the house is only about 60 feet from the edge of their property! Would you be angry if this happened to you? What would you do? We are going to a meeting in that county tomorrow night, hopefully to find what our recourse might be. But, I doubt, barring a miracle from GOD (and I do believe in them), the building will go up.

Well if your county can't help you, then I'm not sure what else to do. Get all the neighborhood to sign a petition to stop the hall from opening. I would personally go so far as to protest with signs... but that's just me. I'm really at a loss for any other ideas, but that's just awful. That's part of the problem with society today, and it just keeps getting worse.

People have tried to get this rescinded in the legislature but it didn't pass. I think they like the money! Brings in lots of revenue! But we found out this afternoon that one of the guys pulled out, removing $1 million, so the building has gone from a 200 x 80 feet building to a 150 x 80 feet building. But we are praying it goes down to nothing!!

I hope it goes down to nothing as well. That just isn't right. I think the bigger stink you make of it, the more people will pull out.

They were getting the pad ready today to pour the concrete. Once it's in, it will be no time until that building is built. And we thought the septic tanks would probably be put behind our property but we found out this afternoon that the parking WILL be behind us. That is going to be terrible, too! You never know what is lurking behind those fences or in the woods! Our property will butt up against the parking lot in the back on two sides and on one side of our house in the front yard.

Oh wow, that is big news! How can they do that ? is it really legal? I thought they are required to post on newspaper etc and have meetings with other owners in the vicinity to get the approval too? It sure is different in the small town. And I would say I admire your 65 acres of land, that is worth a lot of money these days. ( or should I say 2 years ago it was worth a lot) Now with the annoying lights, I doubt it. Plus this means sometimes strangers may wander onto your property too. Bingo hall, do they have that many players for bingo game? They don't need it so big? Good luck and I hope you find a way to stop them.

We live in one county and the bingo hall (gambling) will be in the next county. Just happens to be right here at the back and sides of our house! And it's legal in that county because they didn't put any zoning laws in the bill they passed! Hopefully, it will be outlawed one of these days if they can ever get the democrats out of office that did this to the county. But people love money, so I doubt it ever happens. IT's illegal in our state, so how they ever did it we will never know. Lots of money under the table, probably. This BINGO HALL is not like your regular bingo. These are electronic machines - not really bingo - just a casino! People who would go over to Mississippi frequent these casinos. AND yes, there are lots of people. We went to a meeting Saturday night about the problem, and coming back late by those on the highway, they were full!! We are worried about people on our property or even of them coming in our drive or parking on our property if there isn't enough room there. The property isn't big enough for the building and the people it will bring, believe me. They have made the building into a 150 x 80 foot instead of the original 200 x 80, but that doesn't make us feel any better. The casino itself will knock our real estate prices around here down, especially ours. And the lights will be SO annoying! I wish our house was on another part of our property, but who would have ever thought of a bingo hall coming out here in the country on a two lane road?
