And so the credit crisis comes to town.... .....

And probably it will land right on my doorstep.
We all know the state our economy is in right now, some of us being affected more than others. We are lucky in that in the past couple of years, we knuckled down before all this started and sorted out the vast majority of our debts, its been hard but worth it to see the accounts starting to look healthy for a change.
Only what I did not expect was that our hard work would ultimately turn out to maybe being our safety net. I live in a small town, a town that thrives from one main business, this business has factories all around our area and if you ask anyone in my neck of the woods where they work, they will all tell you the same place.
Well recently this business started redundancies, they laid off a few hundred jobs, it was a tense time, but my hubby was OK, his job was safe. I predicted that there would be more job losses as the company comes into its quiet period in November and so I expected there to be more job losses either before or just after christmas. However, I was wrong, and last week an announcement was made that a further 500 jobs are to go. Well, now it is just a waiting game, waiting to see if my hubby is going to be on that redundancy list. It is going to be tough week for a lot of people, including us, the waiting is awful.
But I mean we are in a better postion than so many other families, I mean even if worst comes to worst, and touch wood it does not, we will have a lump sum of redundancy to come in, we will get more money for child benefit to help out and we have about 2 months of wages in the bank, so we will float for about 6 months before it becomes dire. My hubby already is planning to go into driving and take a course for HGV driving, and they are desperate for drivers. But what about all the other families, they have no back up, they are in debt up to their eyeballs, all of them live way beyond their means and cannot survive on the wage they get without masses of overtime. How are they going to survive, what they get in redundancy will not last them more than a month or two. It is such a sh!t time.
Oh well, not a lot I can do, but boy, have I done some worrying this week, even though I know we will be OK for a while the worry of it is making me ill at times. Could you all please send positive thoughts that my hubby manages to keep his job this time? If he can just keep his job long enough to train up for this lorry driving it will be fine!!
Has anyone else been made redundant recently?
How many of you are worried for your jobs at this moment in time?
What impact on your lives is all this economy worry having?

hey gemini, my husband is self employed in construction. We have been in business for 18 years. Yep we've made some stupid decisions over the years and were not really financially prepared for this 75% decrease in business. I know that % doesn't do much justice so I'll tell you that we need at least 2.5 contracts per week to pay the bills. We have NO overhead, we work out of our home. This month we had 4 projects. Next month we have 2. Hubby laid me off in August. He gets paid maybe every other week.
Do not feel alone, we are with you. I went to church yesterday after missing two weeks. It made me think of all the rough times we've been through. The year of the hurricanes was the worst. We thought we'd never survive. Good people suffer and somehow they always make it through. Keep looking up, it will not be this way forever!

I am sorry to hear that, the trouble is,none of us do think of the worst happening, we get so comfortable in our lives that we just do not think of it. I will be thinking of you, and I hope that it gets better for you real soon xx

Hi gemini,
That is also happening here in our area and truly sad for other Family really who are in a situation where it's hard to find an alternative for resources!
Hopefully, your hubby will not be part of those and for those who will lost their job, there will be ways for them to find another alternatives!
ANyway, this time, my hubby's work is stable but we are also affected by this crisis and instead of having some renovations of the house this year, we were not able to pursue it....Hopefully, this worldwide crisis will be given an attention and solutions for the benefits of all the people who are affected!
I am not working this time but hoping to find a job to assist my hubby with our expenses and plans!

It is a terribly sad time, most of the worker' families do not do their christmas shopping until the pay comes in december as usually there is a bonus, so a lot will have no money for christmas, I have been planning all year for it and have nearly done my christmas shopping luckily.

Thanx gabs, it is all still up in the air, the union is trying to come up with compromises for the workers but to be honest my hubby needs to get out as soon as he can really, it is going to get no better and there will be more job losses even after this round.

As far as my husband's job is concerned, he says he is safe, BUT you just never know. We got ourselves into a bit of debt and slowing digging our way out. I've picked up more seasonal hours at my part time job and am looking for a full time job. Have sent off my cv for various jobs so fingers crossed something comes up. If not now, hopefully after Christmas when my hours cease, then I will have a full time job to go into. We are cutting out on a lot, (hubby still not willing to give up a few things) but I'm working on him. It's helping though.
I hope things get better in time but until then, you're family are in my prayers Gemini and hope your husbands job is safe :)

We are lucky that this is not one of our worries. Hubby's job will always be safe, as there will always be a need for it. However he is still thinking about making a career change into sales. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that, but that's another discussion, lol.
I pray our economy straightens out and families find themselves in less turmoil than as of late.

I think your hubby should stay as he is for the time being, it is a pretty precarious world at the moment.

I was working less hours for weeks, but have my hours back again. I'm sick today so came on to read posts. Hope there are improvements in the economy soon.

I know exactly how you feel. My husbands job contract is up in 2010 but with things the way they are, it's possible that they will break contract and end early. I went through the panic a couple weeks ago. We would literally be destitute. We have no back up wages, I am a stay at home mom. If his contract does end and the new company wouldn't pick him up, we would have to take about 4.00/hour pay cut which we could not survive on. It's scary times right now and with Christmas coming up it's even worse. I'm actually having health problems due to worry and stress. So maybe we can row up sh!t creek together...do you have a canoe? I would rather be rowing on a yacht but a canoe will work!!! Good luck to you, happy thoughts being sent your way right now...Can you feel it???
