I think $400 is way too much to charge for changing a name on a ticket. Although she should have though about it before deciding to travel.

Yes, she should have made the changes. However, many people are not aware of the rules. It also won't work out if this is your honeymoon and the reservations were made in the married name. Can't change the passport without the valid marriage license. It also takes time on top of that, like up to two months.

$400 excessive? Depends on where she was traveling to. The rule is that in essence you have to buy a new ticket. It's not an airline rule but but an FTA rule (after 9/11 rule). The airline could get into a lot of trouble and be fined. Your passport has to match the ticket name exactly, the name on the credit card used has to match the name on the ticket (if you buy for a family it has to match at least one ticket), or you have to jump through extra hoops. Most travelers are not aware of the rule. I only found out because I wanted to use my dads card to book a trip to Germany over the internet and the pop-ups refusing acceptance provided all the information. I don't think you otherwise would even know.

She got the change done for $50, nothing to complain about.

Of course I find $400 excessive. At least she is the type of person to stand up for herself and argue the point. Many, I expect, have just swallowed the loss.

Oops!? More like Yikes! Wow that is a steep amount. Some forget when they first get married and on a rush for the honey moon. I probably wouldn't change mine till after the wedding because I wouldn't have wanted to change it then not get married then have to change it back all over again.
