What direction should the Republican Party take to get back in touch with the people?

Some of my thoughts:

1. Take a stand on reducing government spending and cutting taxes.
2. Educate the people on the Constitution what it does and what it stands for.
3. Articulate the Social values (Life, Family, Personal Responsibility)
4. National Security and a Strong Military

They need to get new leadership and the best and brightest in the Republican Party have to go out and speak to the American People. They have to sell the new ideas the same way President Reagan did after the 1976 election.

Not being a Republican, my first thought would be that Republican's need to get off the religion for a while. That is not how Reagan won. That is the main thing that turns me off the Republican party. I was really disappointed when McCain himself took it up.

The religious right hasn't done a thing for the Republican party that I can see; it has sent many in the opposite direction. I'm a strong believer in keeping religion out of politics. If the Republican party wants to change, I think losing the religion would be the first thing they should do.

Looking at the Obama gameplan, the first thing that Republican's need to do is to get their grassroots politics correct. What Obama has managed to project in the current elections is that the Republican party is for the elitist and the Democrats are for people of all cadres.

You are right in the fact that Republican's need new leadership, but I would be really wary when McCain says that Palin is the next big hope for the Republicans. Don't get me wrong, she can be a pitbull no doubt, but Presidency is completely a different ball game. I think that was the biggest mistake for McCain campaign strategy. Things were head to head till that moment and when Palin went on a personal attack on Obama things started going wrong for McCain.

The only segment that seemed to be still voting republican was the above 65 years category. Unfortunately, this category is a dwindling one and that should alarm the republicans. The 19-24 year segment is firmly in Obama's favor and this segment is more or less going to be around for 10-15 more elections to come, so the Republicans need to make inroads in this segment and this can only be done with young leaders, the 40 somethings need to step up to breathe life into the Republican party now!!

Cheers!

First lets look at the most personal and mean spirited attacks were by the Media, which supported Obama, against Gov. Palin. How many times did the media bring up troopergate? Did they broadcast the fact that she was found to have done nothing wrong in the firing? What she did was nothing compared to how she was treated by President Obama's supporters.

Her biggest problem was trying to deliver a mixed message that the party and Senator McCain wanted. In her own right I think she would be great. Hope she runs in 2012.

Actually, they did broadcast the fact Palin was cleared by the Personnel Board, members of which she could fire. I honestly didn't feel she was attacked. Sure, there were reports of her very poor performances in the few interviews she did, etc., but I don't consider those to be attacks. In my opinion, all most of us needed to do was watch those interviews ourselves to draw our own conclusions.

Anyhow all that is history now and history has been made by Obama. Let's see how the future turns out to be...

I agree. They also need to stop compromising the basic values that they stand for, and tell the neocons to take a hike.

If they would have stood on their conservative values and listened to the true conservative base, McCain would not have been running in the first place.

The conservatives do not view McCain as one of them, which is why his campaign was in trouble from the beginning, and is what gave 0bama the edge.

The conservatives have got to stop blurring the lines between themselves and the liberals... big government is not a conservative ideal, yet Bush grew the size of government.

Above everything else, the conservatives have got to put American interests first, which is something the liberals will never do.

I agree lets give the voters a clear choice and if we lose we lose defending our values and principals. Most conservative ballot questions passed. Some very mixed messages that the voters want a clear choice.

Would social conservatives have voted for Senator McCain if he had been a fiscal conservative too? It might have made a difference. We also need to tell people that we are the government of reform by pointing out that yes we have people who make mistakes but we punish them unlike the Democrats.

The Republican party sure isn't what it used to be. the time is pretty ripe for a new conservative party to step up and take it's place on the national stage. I believe the Constitution party to be just that party.I have become a member and plan on supporting it in my state as much as I can. by attempting to promote candidates firstt for our state senate in the next 2 years, perhaps the U.S.congress. I can only hope many republicans have learned their lesson in this election and with the current president and support real conservative candidates for president.

We need to start a grass roots effort. There are several potential leaders that need to get out and spread the message to the people. They Should make the talk radio circuit and appear on shows like O'Reilly, Hannity and Glen Beck. They need to get out and meet the people and get the message out.

The tricky part is getting main stream media's head out of the assses of the 2 big parties, their so far up them no other party can get in to the debates or even a mention on them.

I kind of feel like I shouldn't be responding here since I'm not a Republican but I have to agree with my friend CP about giving less power to the Religious Right. I don't mean this to be anti-religion at all but I just feel one's faith should be a more private matter and should be kept out of politics as much as possible. I also think the GOP is in dire need of some new blood. Another thing I really noticed during this campaign is that none of the Republican candidates ever even mentioned the "middle class" at all and I really don't see how they can return to power without the middle class. Probably more than anything I think they have to stop the accusations of being anti-American or unpatriotic against those who disagree with them. That's not a very good way to persuade people to take a closer look at your philosophy and policies.

The religious right or the evangelicals have certain values that they hold true. They will support candidates that hold those values in the same way that a pro abortion person will vote Democratic yet do the pro choice people control the party no but they have a lot of influence, you just don't hear about it in the media. In my area the Tavern League is a very influential voting block for both parties. The candidates can talk about enforcement of drinking laws but after the election they go back to business as usual. In this past election one poll showed that 20% of the evangelicals voted for Senator Obama. This is a tag placed on the Republican Party by the Media.

The income tax returns show that Gov Palin is the poorest of the four. yet she gave more to charity than Senator Obama or Senator Biden. Gov Palin was middle class by Senator Obama tax numbers. This is why she had such great appeal to the American People. This is why the supporters of Senator Obama tried so hard to discredit her. Middle class people could identify with her so she had to be destroyed. This is why the Old Guard middle of the road Republicans are attacking her now. They lost the election and not her but they have to blame her or people will begin to look at them and blame them for this loss. To me she and her new bread of Republicans are the hope and future of the party and the country.

I don't know, I'm middle class and everyone I know is middle class but none of us really feel that we "identify" with Sarah Palin. I agree she appealed to the far right wing of the GOP in the beginning but I don't think even they supported her by the end simply because they didn't feel she was qualified. I think she really offended lots of people with her "real America" comments; ironically, Obama won in the place she'd said that so I guess it wasn't in the pro-American part of the country after all.

im pretty sure the republican party is in fine condition. no offense to any democrats/obama supporters, but to increase amount of jobs, taxes need to be increased and when tat happens, jobs will be lost. so not only are there fewer jobs than when we started wit, taxes are sky hi which will prompt the republican party to swoop in and "save the day".
