Winter Coats

My son has had the same winter coat for 2 years now. It was a little big on him when I got it for him and he lost weight this past year, so it still fits him pretty good. I am debating over whether or not to buy him a new one anyway. I need to buy my daughter a new coat year since she has gotten so much bigger. Do you buy your kids a new winter coat every year whether they really need one or not or do you make due with what they already have?

He just wore it last year? I wouldn't get a new one. My daughter fits in hers. She's only 4 so she doesn't care. How old is your son? Is he asking for one? Not that he should get whatever he asks for, but if he doesn't care I REALLY wouldn't offer it. I guess it depends on his age.

Oh I see he's 9 and going to hit a growth spurt? BONUS! You might be able to get a new jacket at 1/2 off by the time he needs it.

one never knows when a child will have a growth spurt. My kids always seem to have theirs in Janurary. If they need a new coat then it was just too bad because by then the stores are already putting out spring and summer clothes. a coat couldn't be found. I think that I would go ahead and get him one now while they are still in the store.

Mine always got theirs right after the first of the year after we bought them new clothes for Christmas. It took me a while to realise that Christmas wasn't a good time to buy them clothes

That is a very good point. He is almost 9 years old and I think he is due for a growth spurt again soon.

If the coat is still in good condition and fits I wouldnt buy another one. With the way the economy is it would be like wasting money. If my kids coats are still in good condition and still fits we dont buy new. We also noramlly will go to second hand stores first, why pay full price if you can find one in good condition cheaper, especially if they are still growing? We also do the same for ourselves. I have had the same coat for about 5 years.

This jacket was purchased at a thrift store 3 years ago. This will be his 3rd year wearing it. It is still in pretty good shape though. I think I only paid $3 for it when I bought it.

Well 3 bucks isnt going to break anyone totally. If he wants a new one then I would go see if I could get another cheap one.

He's been using it for 2 years not, I think it wouldn't hurt if you buy him something new this year. He can still use the old one. He can switch from one coat to another at least every week.

I ended up ordering him one off of walmart.com this week. It was marked down to $10 and I got shipping for 97 cents! Can't beat that!

I think it's kind of silly to buy a new coat if the other one still fits and is still in good shape. My daughter is a 4-5T. Her coat is a 3T but still fits great so we're just waiting until she actually grows out of it. Same with my son. He got a jacket for his birthday two years ago that was a size 8 and he was a 6 at the time. It still fits him great and so there's no reason to buy a new one. Kind of the point of buying big...it lasts longer. :) Plus, the way the economy is right now, it's a smart way to make our dollars stretch.

Well if it fits him fine, AND is in good shape i don't think you need to buy him a new one. But perhaps he would like a new one? Your daughter gets a new one each year and he might get a bit jealous of that. My brother used to get so irritated when we'd get new coats and he didnt... he was at that age much like your son. If my mother thought he was feeling left out and it is the THIRD year for the same coat she buys him one. She didn't buy new coats or shoes unless we really needed them due to wear and tear. It taught us to not be gimme gimme all the time lol... made getting a new coat more fun than just a yearly routine ;)

It's not an issue for me. My daughter has sprouted up every year. So she gets a new coat. Or one that is in good condition handed down from one of her cousins. If her growth ever slows down I would keep a coat for a second year. Juast depends on the condition of the coat.

Fortunately, when my son was little and growing all the time, we lived in FL and TX and rarely needed winter coats. We could use jackets with sweaters under them for the times when it got really cold. He didn't have a real winter coat, probably, until he moved here to Cincinnati to live with me and my hubby. He and I both needed new coats this year, and we were blessed to find brand new ones (with tags) at Goodwill. I love thrift shopping!

Oh...and it was 50% off everything day so I got a brand new coat for $6.50. And so did he.
