Why do conservatives hate service?

I've been reading a lot of conservative blogs and Mylot posts lately; God knows why. Obama's "call to service" for students seems to be the new whipping boy of these folks. My question is why; what's wrong with service. Do conservatives hate it because Obama thought of it? Do they hate the idea of sharing? Are they opposed to young people gaining valuable experience, getting skills they wouldn't have had, and making friends, What's the deal? Please explain.

No, their opposed to the idea of forced community service. Usually it's only applied to criminals. Most would agree that the draft is a terrible idea, so why is forcing an unwilling citizen to perform community service any different? Technically, it's not - when you get right down to it, the government is still forcing people to perform work that SHOULD be voluntary.

I disagree. You get class credit or scholarships. You explore career choices. You grow as a person, in my experience.

Yet you're still forced into it. It doesn't matter what you get in return. By your logic it's perfectly okay to draft young men into the army and send them to their deaths overseas because the experience let's them "grow as a person" as well as gives them compensation.
I maintain that while it is a clever idea, I could never support anything that forces law abiding people to perform a service against their will.

I don't think they hate the young working , but it is the naming it service. I have the feeling that they hear service and they think of the kids are forced. But these days you can't force the young to do anything. It has nothing to do with Obama. Conservatives are Republicans and most Republicans want you to make it but with the least amount of help especially from the government. And this " call to service" may rub them the wrong way. This is just my opinion, a born Democrat.
