Oh No! Toxic Pet Toys! |
| |
| I only just came across this in my email. I subscribe to the petplace.com website and get a daily e-newsletter and this one "woke" me up. Remember how not too long ago, there were massive recalls of toys for children that were made in China due to the high levels of lead paint? Well I just bet none of us thought about the possibility of lead paint in toys for our pets....Well now we should be thinking it, and yes, due to pet toys made in China. Here's an excerpt from the article itself..I urge you though to read the entire article in it's entirety. In the wake of the lead scare, two laboratories have conducted independent tests on randomly selected pet items. These very qualified laboratories include Trace Laboratories, Inc. in Illinois and ExperTox Analytical Laboratories in Texas. Both labs have found lead and other toxic heavy metals in pet items purchased from American stores. ExperTox Analytical Laboratories tested a Chinese-made, Wal-Mart marketed cat toy and dog toy. Both were packaged in a clear plastic wrapping with a cardboard label and no brand name. The dog toy, a latex, green monster, contained high levels of lead and chromium (a cancer-causing heavy metal) and smaller amounts of other toxic materials. The cat toy contained very high levels of the toxic heavy metal, cadmium. The lab determined these toxins were easily accessed and could be acquired from the toy with a simple lick of the dog's or cat's tongue. Trace Laboratories tested Paws 'N Claws tennis balls purchased at a dollar-type store. They found an astounding 27,200 ppm lead levels in the ink on the balls. They also tested a ceramic food dish and found lead levels at 2,890 ppm. The lead levels in both these items far exceeded the limit set for human toys. Besides toys..here are other possible sources of lead that can poison your pet and the symptoms of lead poisoning itself Some lead-containing products which can be a threat to pets include the following: lead paint, fishing weights and sinkers, gun pellets, linoleum, drapery weights, rug padding, automotive parts, and construction materials among others. Some symptoms of lead poisoning include anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures, blindness, deafness and behavior changes. Here's the entire article..it gives more about lead poisoning in general http://www.petplace.com/c... (Warning: This is NOT a referral link but a link to the article about lead poisoning) So gee, just great we now have to concern ourselves about possibly poisoning our pets from lead painted toys...wonderful | | | | | |

| | Yes welcome to the Insomnia Club..Actually not so much insomnia..just a night owl. I've been writing ALL day/night ....the end of the month crunch to earn moola for December. Most of the toys I get for my babies are soft toys..and I've even made my own toys for them..not really too hard..just take some scraps of cloth, I stuff it with catnip, sew it up and instant toy. There was also an article/discussion I wrote about another dangerous dog toy...a ball type thing that dogs can easily break it they chew too hard on it...some dogs' tongues get caught in it and the dogs' tongue winds up having to be amputated as it's the only way to get the ball off...bet that's made in china too. | | | |

Yes, unfortunately, I am up anywhere between 1:00 and 3:00 every morning! Good thing for me that I don't have a job huh? Besides all that, this is ME time, nobody to interrupt me, nobody rushing me off of the computer! I'm Tracy BTW Are you a New Yorker too...IE: The Giants? I am from the Poconos and have been a Steeler for quite a few years. My boyfriend is an Eagle..that is a nice conflict! I just moved to Philly yesterday but he is not going to convert me, that is for sure! I'm glad that you wrote, I was getting bored! Gotta make some coffee now...May as well just stay up at this point!

| | Good God, even our pets aren't safe! Butchie isn't allowed to play with balls cause he can chew right thru a tennis ball like it was butter. That boy has jaws of steel. He used to like to play tug o' war, but he seems to have grown out of that! He's pretty picky when it comes to his toys! I watched a show on the Boston Terriers yesterday morning & everything that they said about them just fit him perfectly! Little sh1t is sleeping with his dad tonite....told ya he was a little homo...You guys have any idea why he has to hump men all of the time? He is fixed and he never does it to women! Thanks for sending a new friend my way! | | | |

Hey guys, tell me something...Darren & I are living together for ONE day now...and on Friday he is leaving me here to go to Vegas to party with his friends. MF never even considered inviting me along. I am HOT on this subject...I don't think that is right, we are a couple for 2 1/2 years & now we are living together. I can't help but be angry with him..especially since I have no idea how to get around places here. I cannot get past this issue & I find myself taking it out on him out of the clear blue..I get pissy & he has no idea why! We have talked it to death & he says I can come next time...Oooh Lucky ME! Normally he is the nicest and most considerate person that I know but he really did a major SNAFU on this move...am I wrong?

| | Hey pye! Oh no is right! Great! I'm glad that I haven't done any Christmas shopping for my babies yet! Now I will have to extra careful to make sure that I only buy them toys that are made in the USA! And I have a feeling that this is not going to be that easy! Most of the toys are made in other countries! But I sure as hell won't be buying anything that is made in China for me or my babies ever again! This is just ridiculous! I was talking about this in another discussion before about children's hairbands being made of used condom's made in China (think it was one of Jerz's discussions) WTF is wrong with those people! I think that the US Government should ban any further trade with China totally! They don't seem to care if they kill their own people so why should they care if they harm or kill us! Now I have to be scared to death that I might buy something that might kill my poor cats! I just can't take it anymore! I sure hope that I can find some nice safe presents for my babies! I just don't know what to do! I'm going to have to go to PETCO and make sure that I get safe toys for them. I think I'll get them a nice scratching post or something that I know won't hurt them! Thanks for the this very important update! | | | | | | |

| | You know what I do opal? I make a lot of my own cat toys and it's really very easy...Just take some scraps of old fabric..I sometimes use the fabric from old tee-shirts...I cut out a shape, sew it up a bit, then stuff some catnip in it, then sew it close...they love it --think so much safer. Yeah, what is with the products made in China. Used to be the joke that everything was made in Japan...never heard them making inferior, poisonous, hazardous products | | | |

| | I think I'm going to that! It sound's like a nice safe way to go! I'm going to buy some catnip. I'm not the best sewer but, I'm going to try! I want to get them a scratching post and hope they will get out of the habit of using the couch leg. I'm really scared to buy them any toys now. | | | |

| | This doesn't surprise me at all. I have come to the point now where I'm sorry to say I will buy nothing from that country. Not food or childrens' toys or pet toys. It has even been shown that some of the clothes have caused people to be ill from chemicals leaching into their skin. I bought a pack of tennis balls for my dogs and when I opened the pack the smell was so dreadful it was enough to knock you out. It was a really vile chemical smell. I didn't want to touch them myself let alone give them to the dogs. They went straight into the garbage bin, tightly wrapped up. The problem is, some of the things are marked with the name of a country we trust and later we find they are actually manufacturing the product off shore. This is what happened with that well known American brand of toys we all bought for our babies. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, I think you're speaking about Mattel...one of the largest so-called American toy manufacturers but in reality all the toys are made in china. Thing is, it's hard to get anything nowadays that isn't made there. It's like suddenly other countries are forgetting how to make anything anymore, and the products from China are dirt cheap. I actually feel sorry for the workers in China who are making the products as they are unknowingly being exposed to toxic materials....it's the higher ups, their CEOs that are to blame...I mean they don't have to be exposed to the product since all they do is sit in their cushy offices all day long, planning lunch dates or cocktail hours with friends..if they're anything like the CEOs here in our country who are flying in their private jets at a tune of $20,000 a trip like they did recently from the CEOs from the car companies who were asking Congress for a financial bailout--sorry..rambling a bit..LOL | | | |

| | Yes Mattel. They make Fisher-Price toys don't they? Those are the ones we used to buy for our little children. If you look at them now you can see they are nowhere near the quality they used to be. They used to be well made and solid, now they seem lighter and more flimsy looking. | | | |
pyewacket (12221)
|

| | Yes, I think Fisher-Price is a division of Mattel, but not sure, all I remember that during the summer there was a massive recall of toys made by those companies, and you're right. The quality of toys has gotten real flimsy | | | |

| | I must admit, I HAD thought of this when purchasing a pet toy to take to my daughter's. My Mum has a dread of anything made in China, so I was mindful of the stickers on the toys and purposely didn't choose anything from there. I also worry about the bright coloured dyes on the toys. It's very frightening there isn't more policing of chemicals and additives used when making things - even upholstered furniture from China has been found to be grossly toxic. No wonder so many people now have allergies and asthma - almost unheard of 30 years ago! I didn't know a single kid with an asthma puffer when I was growing up, and now every second child seems to have one in their schoolbag. Something's seriously wrong! (Digression ...) | | | | | | |

| | The problem is, did you know a lot of products might be from companies here in the US, and maybe say "distribued by (company name)" but are still made in china? Yikes I didn't know that about furniture items as well. And you're right about more and more kids having asthma now...not only kids but adults as well...does make you think | | | |

| | Just last night they had an article on telly about buying Christmas hams. Apparently if the label says 'product of Australia', it means the ham is from Australian pigs - but if it says 'made in Australia', it contains pork (?) meat imported from possibly questionable sources which is processed into a ham here. The article said the best way to be sure was to buy ham on the bone, as it's illegal for boned ham to be brought into the country. A handy hint! | | | |

| | HI Pye: I'm glad you discovered this, and yet it does not surprise me one bit!! Not one bit! How much longer is ( our country) going to keep putting up with this nonsense and why is it that everything we wear everything we buy most of it comes from there and or other countries?? I don't understand it all, cheap may be the way to go but not when its killing us all one by one and our pets and just everything; I'm sick to death of it myself; I rarely have enough $$money$$ for anything like that for any of my pets so I don't have to worry there but I sure know plenty of people who do buy their cats and dogs lots of silly balls, and other toys and probably have no clue what they are doing to them; Its just so sad! REally really sad!! Thank you for sharing this with us all you night owl you; LOL! and the other night owl ladies...(G)! | | | | | | |

| | I'm beginning to wonder if anything is made in our country anymore, and it's not just cheap discounted items or stores, but even expensive stores that sell things from other countries. What's wrong with this country anyway. More of our people could have employment if more things were made here. | | | |

| | Thanks for the warning. Luckily for us we do not buy dog toys as our dog destroys them in seconds. We stick to proper bones now but it is worth knowing so we can be careful of anything we see. Even tennis balls? What are they doing to their own people? Doesn't anyone care any more about peoples welfare. | | | | | | |
