Do you buy a live Christmas tree or a cut one? |
|
Obviously, not everyone has a Christmas tree because they don't celebrate Christmas. This discussion is for those who do.
When you buy a tree, do you prefer the cut ones? If so, do you buy one already cut or do you go to a tree farm where you cut your own?
Have you or would you consider buying a live tree? I'm thinking of doing that this year. We have the room and I have already planted several evergreens for privacy. We live in what I call a "fishbowl" because the shared private road we live on goes right through our property and we really have no privacy.
So, that's why I'm thinking of a live tree this year. I will plant it after Christmas in a spot where it will give us some privacy. I like the idea, actually, for more than just the fact that it will provide us privacy; I like it because trees are living things and it's a shame to cut a tree just to use for a few weeks.
What are you doing this year and what is your reason for it?

2. pergammano (2020) | 1 year ago | mentalward...I haven't read the responses as I am having serious computer glitches! But buying a "live" tree is a wonderful idea...and to plant it for posterity is even more wonderful! But there are several things you should make yur aware of when considering a "live" tree! (Trial & error, dead vs. live)! 1. You will want to keep the tree in your house a minimal amount of time! The VERY, VERY maximum is 10 days! Best situation..4-5 days! 2. Keep it away from heat sources, e.g., have it in the coolest place possible! 3. Climatize bringing it in...and taking it out! 4. Use the coolest electric lights you can find, remember they get warm!
Please spend a few minutes of your time researching/do not rely on the Sales Person, as "live" trees are expensive (emotionally expensive, too)! I personally like a cut one....as I live where it can/and is still a tradition to go out & cut one as a family outing! I don't know about where you live, but here in B.C. we are encouraged to cut our trees from Hydro easements!Cheers!

3. poisonivez (418) | 1 year ago | We dont have real christmas trees in the philippines since it only grows in cold places. We have one place in the philippines where they grow christamas trees or pine trees, and buying it from there would be very impractical. So most of the household, buy those plastic christmas trees.

mentalward (4352) | 1 year ago | Those are fine, too! Some of them look like the real thing until you get up real close to them. I've seen a lot of fake palm trees with lights on them, too. I don't know exactly when that trend started but I think it looks pretty cool.

4. lilybug (15367) | 1 year ago | The last few years we have done an artificial tree. In past years we have had one that has been cut. We have several hundred trees on our property, so cutting down just one would not hurt anything really, but they are not your typical Christmas trees. We have mostly pine trees, but they are not sturdy enough to hold decorations.

mentalward (4352) | 1 year ago | Your pine trees sound like my pine trees. They're all kind of skimpy. Well, we do have one growing beside our house that's really full and thick. I put lights on it but I'm not about to cut it down and bring in inside!
I had an artificial tree almost the entire time my youngest son lived with me. We found out when he was about 4 years old that he was allergic to practically everything, including evergreen trees. So, I had to stop buying the real ones and get an artificial one.
Actually, it was much more convenient because it was always there. You didn't have to go freezing your buns off to buy a real one every year, nor did you have to spend that money each year! Real trees are expensive!
My husband loves real trees so I got rid of the artificial one. I'm going to insist on a live tree from now on, though. We have the room to plant them after Christmas and, if we're going to spend that much money on a tree each year, we should have something that will live awhile!

5. Chevee (3640) | 1 year ago | I do celebrate Christmas, but I am not going to put up a tree, I haven't put one up in years. I had an artificial tree and it was old and worn out so I threw it away. I have seen some beautiful artificial trees that I would like to buy just haven't done it. I really don't have anywhere to store anything I need to get me a storage shed. As for live Christmas tree, they are nice just hard to maintain doing the holiday seasons. If you do decide to get your cut Christmas tree I would like to see a picture of it.

6. winterose (17896) | 1 year ago | I haven't had a christmas tree since my son was six, in fact I just wrote an article about it. The cats were always pulling it down so we decided not to have one anymore.

mentalward (4352) | 1 year ago | Cats can be real pests with Christmas trees! I remember a cat we had when I was young who would climb up the trunk to the very middle of the thing! It was impossible to get him out of there! He knocked the tree over one year! After that, my mother would always tie a heavy string around the middle of it and attached it to the wall on both sides. I can still see that string! LOL
Of course, all the cats I've had since then would play with the ornaments hanging near the bottom until they fell off the tree and broke. I started leaving the bottom of the tree bare. It helped... some.

| 7. cloudstrife (51) | 1 year ago | usually buy a cut one. always so busy to actually get out and get to an actual tree farm even tho there are tons of them out where i live. it would for sure be all that much more fun going to the farm and picking out a tree.

mentalward (4352) | 1 year ago | I agree! I used to do that before I was married with kids. They're so much fresher when you cut them down yourself.
Getting a cut tree right now would be kinda nice because there are so many to choose from. I doubt the selection will be there next week, though.
I guess hubby and I should get out and buy that live tree soon, too. As far as I've seen, there's only one nursery selling them around here!

mentalward (4352) | 1 year ago | I had an artificial one for years myself. My youngest son was diagnosed with allergies when he was about 4 years old and one of them was from evergreen trees. So, I had to buy an artificial tree. They have two very good qualities... you don't have to go out and freeze your buns off then lug the thing home each year, nor do you have to shell out all that money for a real tree! Those things are expensive! Oh! And you don't have the problem with pine needles all over your house after the holidays! LOL

9. jhoannejoj (722) | 1 year ago | Hi mentalward.. I always wish of havin a real christmas tree since I grow up in a very warm country wherein its impossible to plant and grow one. I remember that my Mom way back in the pHilippines always make a very special Christmas tree. Its either made of soap bubbles, cellophanes, colored plastic papers and watever things she can think of. What makes our Christmas tree very special is the labor of love on how those tress bein made by Mom for several days. When I arrived here in DK and first experienced the Christmas last year, I was so mesmerized when I saw a very huge real Christmas Tree. I even touched it and just like a child go merry round by it together with friends. Though the Christmas trees here in Denmark are real, I cannot exchange the joy Christmas brings while celebrating it together with my family.

mentalward (4352) | 1 year ago | Oh, that's lovely, jhoannejoj! What a beautiful memory! I would give anything to have one such as yours to remember back on. That tree your mom made had more significance than any real or store-bought tree could ever have!
I would have loved to have been there to see you experiencing your first real tree, though. To be able to experience that kind of awe in our adulthood is so very rare!
Enjoy your next one!

| 10. XeroFrozenFs (77) | 1 year ago | My family just uses a fake Christmas tree.My grand mother is allergic to the real ones so we are unable to get one,and hey without family it isn't much of Christmas now is it:)
| |
| |
|
|
mentalward (4352) | 1 year ago | My youngest son had the same problem, Xero. When he was 4 I had to buy an artificial tree because that was one of the many things he was allergic to.
That was fine with me! No tree to buy each year, no pine needles on the floor to deal with, and no shelling out that money each year for a new tree!
But, my husband wants a real tree now. My son had 5 years worth of allergy shots so now he's healthier than I am! LOL
I agree wholeheartedly with your reasoning for having a fake tree! If my grandmother was allergic, or even if my son was still allergic, I'd have a fake tree. It just wouldn't make sense to put something like a real tree above the comfort of our own family!
