Gift Cards might not be a good idea for some stores.  

That is an excellent idea. I think that the giftcards are usually good but some of those are a problem. It was good of you to bring this to everyone's attention. It is importatnt to be able to use them when you buy them for someone.

I'm doing no gift cards this year. I usually do a few but I had rceived this via email and opted for restaraunts this year. I did a few Restaraunt gift cards but as unstable as everything is this year I would be afraid to try the gift cards. Some of the plces that have alreay gine out were selling gift cards right up to the day they closed the doors. What were those people thinking? Thanks for sharing!

If you want to get a gift card you could get a visa gift card that is good anywhere that way you don't have to worry about the store closing or sending cash in the mail.
That would be so sad to get a gift card for Christmas and then the store shuts its doors. You can use gift cards online thought too if there are still other stores open. My son usually gets a gift card to Walmart for Christmas and he is getting on to Mcdonalds also so I think the gift cards we are getting will be ok.

Thanks for a great discussion, I'm sure this list will be very helpful for lots of people! I'd heard of some of these store closings but not all of them. It's really a shame, all these people losing their jobs not to mention the snowball effect they will have on other area businesses where they close.

I've given money for years and haven't gotten a single complaint so far and I sure don't mind receiving cash! I may not look "fancy" or have a pretty design on it but at least the recipient can be sure it won't end up being worthless by the time the New Year rolls around.

I buy gift cards all the time as a gift for people because I don't know what else to get them. JC Penny and Circuit City are stores I regularly purchase gift cards from. It's a shame they won't tell people about this, I know it has to be about the money, because if they mention it at all they know that a lot of people might not purchase any more gift cards from them.

I never buy people gift cards. I'm old fashioned and think it's insulting to give someone a gift card--I know this is not considered valid by most people, and I don't hold it against anyone who uses gift cards. I prefer to shop for gifts, that's half the fun!

It's good that you posted this because there are a lot of pitfalls in buying and using giftcards.

I too received the same list. It's a very good head up for people who are going to make purchases from such stores around Christmas season. Purchasing a gift card would be a very bad idea. Imagine giving someone an expensive card and then the person not being able to use it as a result of the store closing. Thanks for the list. Good information!
