A older woman in a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Tennessee finds a paperbag filled with $97,000 in $1000 bills. She took it home, and called back to the restaurant asking if they had a lost and found dept and described the find. More on the link I provide. http://www.startribune.com/nation/35822919.html?elr=KArks7PYDiaK7DUHPYDiaK7DUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU Would you do it? what would you do? in a time where economics is at a all time mow, discuss what you would do?

If I found money like that I would really have to think hard about turning it back in. I'd be thinking about all the things that I could do with the money, but in the end I fill like I would do the same thing this lady did. I think she done a really good thing

Thanks for being the first to respond! and Welcome to My Lot! My boyfriend and I discussed this and I was like, with debit cards, especially disposable ones all over the place, I would have either kept it in those, a checking account and used some maybe a couple of hundred for travelling expenses. That's what I would do myself. or have a fanny pack with some money in it. I just cannot in times as crucial as this and a time of year as this where folks are really hitting the bottom of the barrel will I be out there with that kind of money.

Hhhmmm...first off, it would be hard in bring that kind of currency back into the market. How many $1,000 bills have you seen in your lifetime? Today, my daughter went to go turn in her "Student of the day" award coupon for a free combo meal at a restraunt and the cashier was giving my daughter the suspcious look. She even went to ask several coworkers if the paper was real. So, you can imagine how some merchant would feel regaurding a $1,000 bill. *Pleiades

I'm not going to lie to you. $1000 bills got me looking funny. When I got my income tax refund a month or so ago, they gave it to me in $20s and $10; no lie. Who's gonna break a $1000 bill? not that many folks or businesses. So that sounded a bit fishy to me as well.

I would return it. It is not my money. It is different if someone drops a dime or some coins along the street, then you do not know whether they were being altruistic or just careless, but with thousands of dollars - mind you, I would have thought it was from a robbery and I would have called the police as well and have them come with me to the restaurant. As for the reward, I would have wanted to know all about how she makes out in Florida, like exchange phone calls and email addresses, but that is all. And I would want to know how she makes out. It is a good thing no employee saw the bag with the money or that woman might have lost the money altogether.

Well thought out Suspenseful. Thanks for coming by and answering. Like I say it's hard times and hard enough that someone leaves a bag in a restaurant with barely no ID and expect it back. If I can't be any clearer, PLEASE PUT THE MONEY SOMEWHERE SAFE!!! This is hard times in this world and though you have good people, I feel in this world, there are also people who are probably going through the worse of times and would see that as a blessing for them. I cannot reiterate this enough. Be careful out there.

Hello Savvynlady. I think that this granny is worth learning and respecting a lot by us. I appreciate her being so kind and helpful to giving back the money to the loser. It is a huge sum of money and I am sure that the loser must be very sad when he or she found the loss of the money. I think that I will do the same to return the money to the loser if I happened to find the same because I can understand the feeling. Merry Christmas, friend.

The same to you. I haven't been getting on as much due to me having to turn off the internet since I am not working. You are right, the grandma deserves our respect and we can learn something from her. You won't get no arguments there. but with times like these in the country, I had to ask the question and ask for honesty.

As much as I would love to keep the money, I would have to do the right thing and turn it in. I would bring it to the police, i do not think I would call the restaurant. I would be skeptical, especially since it was in $1000.00 bills. I have never seen a $1000.00 bill before, and would feel strange taking it to the bank. It could have been counterfeit, I can not imagine 97 $1000.00 bills.

I cannot either, and to have it in cash and in a paper bag that is something. I just got my income tax refund a few weeks back, and I had it in a paper bag, but I took out half and put it away. The other half I went shopping with. I feel good about that. Plus paid bills and all. that I feel good on.

I would be more inclined to call the police than the restaurant. At least with the police if no one claims the money they will give it back to you. Who knows what an employee/manager/owner of a restaurant would do. I definitely would not keep the money, as much as I would be tempted. I know that doing the right thing will come back to me in kind one day.

good answer Patgalca. But just like the lady below, I'd be a bit leery with them as well. I am glad the owner got back their money and all in the end because she was trying to start a new life in Florida.

Ther are too many holes in that story for me but if I was to actually find $97,000 somewhere I would have called the police for two different reasons. First of all I would have though it was from a robbery or something and with my luck the first dollar I spent would be marked ! LOL I mean it's not normal for people to carry that amount of money on them. Espcially in a tapestry bag and hang it on a hook! But the second reason would be that if a person was missing that amount they would have filed it with the police so I would be getting a reward and sleeping a lot better because it would eat me up if I kept it! Have a great day!

Which is why I say that it is best to put it in the bank or on disposable debit cards, and just have a few hundred for travelling expenses. To me that would be the best option because in times like these where so many people are out of work, looking for work, don't have a job, a bag with that kind money is a blessing for them. But I hear you on that marked money thing as well. Set ups do happen and you gotta be careful on that kind of thing.

Probably the same thing the old woman did, although days are really hard now, but i cant in my conscience spend dollars that are not really mine. Would rather eat the food i usually eat getting satisfied than to eat fine/luxury foods that the money spend came from someone who suffers by losing the money.

I really like your response. That is exactly how I would feel. As bad as I need money now, I would rather deal with my situation until I can do better than to gain from someone else's loss.

Well, honestly I think I would keep it. I know its not the right thing to do but I can't lie and say I would give it back. I am not saying I would spend it right away. I know I would be scared. i might sit for a few weeks and see if I hear anything about it and if not..spend it. If it was found in a paper bag to me it seems like someone was up to no good anyway with it.

When the other lady said she would keep it, I told her my feelings. I am not working either. And sadly, it's a depression going on here. Forget recession, it's a depression if folks isn't working. My heart goes out to them as well as those who are trying to do the right thing but they are catching their own hell at this time. But in times like these, it's best to keep the cash secure. plain and simple.

Wow that is a lot of money hmmmm.....I would think about it but in the end, I think that I would have done the same thing because if I kept it I would eventually feel bad about it because maybe someone who lost it really needed it to probably pay their bills or buy things it was important for something. So I wouldn't keep it. Now if the restaurant told me if no one claimed it after a certain time and it was mine then I would be a very happy person and I know what I would do with it. People would probably call me crazy to turn it in, but you have to think about it. Really someone was probably in need of that money and is probably running around mad looking for it. I know I would.
