do you wave to the person you don't know?

I live in California and my neighborhood is nice like that too.

This brings back memories of dating my husband. The first date we had we went to a race track on Sunday afternoon. You have to realize it was a long way from his home. Well, before we got to the track, we were passing people in their yards, and he would wave at them. I asked him if he knew those people and he said, no, he was just being friendly. I do wave at people when they wave, and I speak to people when they speak to me. I don't live in a close neighborhood or near the road where people would wave. But we've been working in the yard and people would wave or blow and we'd wave back. When someone asks me how I am in a store line, I always tell them fine and ask them how they are doing. I think it's just a custom in our country that we learned when we were young. It is just good manners, and it shows we are friendly. Now, I wouldn't say you'll find everyone this way. It all depends where you are.

Yes, of course I often do that custom with all my neighbour. Even with someone which I do not recognize before, but she/he lives in my neigborhood, i give them with my little smile.

For me, it's my pleasure to say hello or even say: good morning to anyone, and i think it will make them feel happy with my greetings.

I never do that. I am always suspicious of strangers.
From my own personal experiences, I have learnt that one cannot possibly trust strangers. We have to keep stranegrs away for our own protection.

I live in Florida...in the country...and the people around here are very friendly so, yes, there is a lot of waving going on. My husband and I like to sit on our front porch and folks wave and sometimes beep their horns as they drive past so we wave. Some people in the neighborhood walk and we've had lots of chats with folks we don't really know who are walking past our house. I've also had nice talks with total strangers in our little grocery store or at the post office and I met the nicest little old lady when we bought our Christmas tree this year.

Well, my experience is not about our neighbors. I've been embarrassed many times when I waved to the wrong person inside a mall. There was one time that a lady was smiling back at me and waved her hand inside a this ladies clothing store. I really thought she was waving on me because she kept staring at me. Of course, I waved back and thought that this person might be someone I used to know, but only to find out she was waving to the person behind my back. LOL. They seemed to be long lost friends or I don't know. My face turned red at that time and I'm so embarrassed.
Now, I learn the lesson. I will only wave back when someone shouts my name. Dang it!

It will be so nice if there is person that will be so friendly to you..but not here in the Philippines. People here specially tourist should be careful. Even though not all people have here are like that..that will smile and then have bad intentions on you..Only few anyway..Even I my self if someone will smile at me and then I dont know him or her I will try to think and ask myself.."Do i know you?" I will never reply and smile back or wave back my hand to him or her..NO way..I am just afraid to trust people doing like that this days.SO its better to be careful.

Yes, I do sometimes. But, it leaves me confused and I keep thinking that where did I last meet that preson? Do I really know him/her?

we usually don't do that here in my country.. but just for the heck of doing it, i wave at little kids whenever i see one and the parent's not watching.. i like making friends, that's all.. lol! seriously..:) take care...

yes, I do but only to babies. I don’t wave to stranger adults as I’m not sure of their reactions but babies are always such a beautiful sight. I just cant pass by without waving at them and when they wave back with their tiny tottering palms with a wonderful toothless grin…aahhh that makes my day any time.

My neighbourhood or rather country is like your former country and specially in cities where almost everybody is a stranger, we dont wave just like that.
