Crafts Made From Recycled Christmas Cards  email this discussion to a friend?

Do you recycle your Christmas cards (other cards work too)? When I was a child my mother bought some sandwich bags of decorations that were made by some church group. They were made with construction paper, Christmas cards, and curling ribbon. We had those for years and hung them up around the house every Christmas. When I was an adult, I made some of my own. Basically they were the cut out pictures on the Christmas cards, cut out with pinking shears. You could use any of the fancy scrapbooking scissors also. Then you cut two pieces of contrasting colored construction paper, also with the fancy edging, but the first piece just slightly larger and of the same shape as the Christmas card, and the second piece slightly larger than that piece. You can cut the Christmas card to any interesting shape that goes along with the picture. Then you take a paper punch and punch a hole through all three pieces of paper, and then tie the ribbon through the hole for hanging the finished decoration.
Later when I worked as an activity director in nursing homes I found other ways to recycle Christmas cards and other greeting cards. These were used to make placemats. You would take a glass or can lid or other circular item about 4 inches diameter and make circles on the greeting card over the best part of the picture. Then you lay out some clear contact paper about the size of your placemat you want to make and start placing the cut circles on the placemat face down. If you want a two-sided placemat, place a second layer of circles face up on top of the ones you put face down. Then cover with a second piece of clear contact paper being careful to not get air bubbles in it. Finally, cut around the outside edge to make the shape you want for your finished place mats.

What kinds of crafts have you made with recycled Christmas or greeting cards?

I used to cut out the designs in each cards I have recieved and make a collage out of it. Then I'd attach a picture of me and my family. Sometimes I used some of the Christmas cards with unusual shape as a pattern. By the way Merry Christmas! =)

Great idea putting your picture into the collage. I like that.

My friends used to use recycled Christmas cards as gift tags. It made the gift look so much nicer with a big picture on it.

I can't think of much else to do with it, although your ideas are neat.

Well, I have done the placemat thing with older cards when I was younger a couple of times. When you do the Circles like you were mentioning they do look nice, and a Great idea for kids to do for presents as well. I usually do still keep my cards around in case I ever want to do anything with them later, but never seem to find the time anymore.

We've made place mats and coasters with them. I reuse mine each year as gift tags. In grade school we brought old cards then glued them onto tin cans to make Christmas pencil holders. The coasters we bought the plastic ones you slip photos into and put the cards into instead...then we change them at the end of the season.

I've hung old ones up each year until i get new ones in the mail. I've also used them for putting in photo scrapbooks. (I've done this with gift tags as well)

This year my mom cut up some old ones and used them to make new scrapbooked ones to mail out to people..they were different because she'd cut the snowman out of the picture and leave the background but use just the snowman on the new card. They looked really pretty.

Those are some good ideas. I especially like the pencil holder idea and the scrapbooked cards.

There are so many great things to do with them. I like crafting with them. One of things I do is use them to glue onto containers to give cookies and candy as gifts. Sometimes I use left over [or recycled ] gift wrap and put parts of the card in too, sort of a colloge. I use them on wreaths also. Don't forget to use the text parts, they say so much.

Very nice ideas. I like the idea of the collage. And you are right, the text is often very good.
