One nut is as good as another, I don;'t think so

We went shopping today, and I went into the bulk section of the store, and picked up some walnuts and was going to get some almonds, but my husband said get peanuts instead and even though I was going to get some almonds he made such a fuss that I did not get any. He says that peanuts are just as good, but I know that with peanuts, I will eat until I get sick, but with almonds I can have a handful a day and am perfectly satisfied. I have read on the net that almonds are good, and because it was so cold, I could not go and take another walk down to the bulk food store and besides I am trying to save money. It is a shame when I cannot get what I need because of some silly idea that one nut is as good as another according to, you know.

Peanuts are high in protein and beneficial oils. Walnuts also are very good for your body. Almonds are excellent for your heart. Contrary to what your husband says, not all nuts are as good as the other. Peanuts are higher in calories and have a totally different taste than peanuts. Walnuts are high in oil content and are good for you but again are high in calories. I prefer almonds myself, and will grab something that has almonds or almond paste in it. Next time, when it comes to nuts, send you know who on an errand at the other end of the store and pick up the nuts you enjoy. If he gets lippy about it, look at him and say, not all nuts are as good as another, because I married you and you're the best nut of them all!

He wants me not to run off and disappear because he had a stroke and is afraid of falling. I am hoping when he is told next year that he can no longer drive to go with my daughter-in-law so I can get what we want, and not just what he wants or can go with one of my friends. Shopping with husbands is no fun.

I hope so too. I was planning to go shopping with my daughter-in-law next year, but then my husband got this brilliant idea, that we could take the Handicapped bus and since I was a caregiver, I could go along. Great!! Now he will be going to Superstore with me and telling me "you don't need this!' and we went to my sons's place and they did not have any nuts, no almonds or anything. And I am trying to cut down on spending next year.

Well he was raised Mennonite, and I found out that his oldest brother's wife never drove, neither did the wives of his other brothers drive. One of them tried for a little while, but stopped. It is a pattern there, they seem to think that women are too nervous. My other sister-in-law lives near the stores, but with me it is a good almost mile to the stores. I do not know if my husband will live long or not. He is just 63, if he were about my age, 65, then I would think that he might die anytime now, but his sister is in her 70s, and she had a stroke, is practically incapacitated and is still alive, and his father had a bad heart and strokes and survived to his seventies. I would love to shop with my daughter-in-law, and I do not mind changing to shopping on Saturday. I do not do much on Saturday either.

I hope that you will get some almond nuts soon. I think each nut is different in flavor and often in appearance too. I like flakes of almonds on my soya dessert. I love to eat macadamia nuts most of all in small amount. I like peanuts but they don't agree with me so I avoid them. A Brazil nut is large and a hazel nut is tiny. Pecan nuts look similar to walnuts but taste different. One type of nut can taste different plain to roasted, natural to salted. Peanuts are the cheapest nuts to buy in my home country and some nuts are pricey to buy.

I was wondering whether I can get mixed nuts, without the peanuts, and they will do just as good. Most of them include cashews, so will check and see.

Yes, in my home country, I buy a packet of mixed nuts, a premium brand because it doesn't have peanuts. Good luck with your shopping, it is Boxing Day today so all supermarkets here are closed.

I was thinking of going to the Bulk store since I can get things cheap and it looks as if it will be fairly nice today, only 28 degrees F, but that means it will be icey.

At the recent 2005 Experimental Biology conference there were several studies regarding the benefits on almonds. Almonds may lower LDL (aka “bad) cholesterol, and they seem to help block the body’s absorption of both fat and carbohydrates. This has numerous implications for diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. The fiber structure of almonds may be the mechanism behind this phenomenon, and this reduces the calories available from the almonds themselves. Almonds may slow the actual absorption of the carbohydrates into the body, which means that they help to create a slower rise in blood sugar levels – and therefore help to keep insulin levels in check.

That is why I wanted the almonds. I think my husband wants me to die sooner (even though he had the stroke) so he can gt my money and I do not have enough. Then he will be able to move into a senior's home and then have me cremated against my wishes.

Yes that is what I thought. I told my husband that, but he would not believe it. The only way is if his doctor tells him on a stack of bibles.

You're right Elic! I don't know how I lucked out with my boy friend. We decided to put off Christmas until after the first of the year. I am so glad we did as I wouldn't have had the money go pay for Murphy's vet bill on the 24th! It took the last $150 I had to get her better, but as I said in my discussion she is worth every penny. Well yesterday I got up feeling a bit blue, no presents under the tree. Bill came down and had a gift bag for me. The man had gotten me a new Starbucks travel mug (which had my favorite chocolates in it!!!) and a gift certificate to Starbucks for when I start going to class again next month. It was a wonderful surprise... I don't know how I rated getting such a wonderful man who remembers my favorite things and is there for me and worries more about me than I do, but I thank God everyday for sending me Bill. It sounds like with that man he is as stubborn as a mule. There is no easy way to change a mules mind, so you have to think of ways to work around the mule.

I guess the only thing for me to do is to buy almonds at the bulk store - and that will be a whole $10 or so- money I cannot afford to spend.

Actually some nuts are not nuts at all. The peanut is actually a pea, not a nut, so we got half the name right. Strangely enough the almonds you speak of is actually also a seed. http://www.boston.com/news/science/articles/2006/10/30/are_peanuts_really_nuts_i_say_theyre_not/ [this is not a reference link, it is a link to an article] You would have to check the nutritional content of most nuts side by side but I am sure from what I am led to believe the oils in them are heart healthy and have lots of protein, but are usually high in calories. You might also find peanuts while having healthy oils, there is usually a lot of added salt.

I told my husband that, but he thinks that peanuts are the best. It does not matter if the almonds are better for my diabetes, he really does not care. Unless the doctor can tell him straight off - that is if he comes in with me to the doctor's office, that almonds are better and swears on a stack of Bibles, he will not believe.

The trouble is that he gets $2000 plus for his pension, while I get about $600, so I would rather have him pay for the food instead of me. One time I had to get some nuts because he made a fuss and I had to spend about $10 extra for them and that was on top of my herbs and vitamins I get for my diabetes. We do get the unsalted kind, but with peanuts I cannot just stop eating them, whereas with almonds and walnuts and other nuts, I feel full after a few.

Where does it say in your marriage contract that you have to eat the same nuts at the same time, so why not buy almonds for you and peanuts for him. I find it odd that people would be so stubborn over nuts but then I am not married. You have to watch out for peanuts that have been deep fried in saturated oil. Check the labelling to make sure they have not been dumped in saturated fat. The combination of saturated fat, salt and calories make peanuts a poor nutritional choice from what peanuts should be without the added oil and salt.

Well, Doesn't seem you are saving money then if in fact you eat more peanuts then the almonds because you will end up buying more peanuts and I have heard the almond is healthier, and since you eat less and are satisfied more then maybe you should buy the almonds...cause really as you said you eat more when it's peanuts..I think if you had something from the doctor saying that you need almonds instead of peanuts then maybe he will break down let you get what you want. I love almonds...I can eat alot more almonds then peanuts..I like the harder texture of the almond.Well, Good luck and Happy Holidays.

LOL that's funny. how come one nut is as good as another. their nutrition content may be close but definitely not the same. plus the taste counts especially if you are going to mix it in a dish. I can't imagine hubby says that. he is very particular when it comes to food and snacks. Yes it would be too cold now to walk outside. I hope tomorrow temperature won't be as low and you can get the almonds.

Tomorrow is Christmas, so I hope they have nuts at my son and daughter=-in-law;s place. We picked up some biscuits and chocolates and of course, my husband got some that did not have any nuts in - just some stupid brandy filled chocolates and chocolate covered biscuits. If not, I will have to wait until next Wednesday to get some and it will be too blasted cold.

I would have to agree with you that almonds are better for you than peanuts. Just as with anything, if it is more expensive it is better. Peanuts are cheaper than any other nut. Peanuts are good for protein, but I'm with you, I prefer an almond over a peanut anytime.

Yup, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, macadamia- the taste itself is definitely different! I like eating nuts, and especially macadamia - but all are rather expensive, except for peanuts. If budget is not a problem, I would opt for the others instead.
