Is the World Changing Faster than Human Capacity to Change? | | Do you agree? Is this good or bad?
Do we really need to give up the old values, all of them? Given a choice, what values would you discard, and what would you retain?

I would keep all the values,e.g. respecting your elders, being polite etc but I wish I could remove some of human vices!:) Sounds impossible, doesn't it? Yes,we live in difficult time and there are wars everywhere, small and large, and technology changes faster than we can keep up.So what? I'm sure a century ago people were confused and perplexed with cars and telephones,as well as the World War. The society might be not as gentle and refined as it was but people haven't changed much.

This world has wiped most life from it's surface many times, that we humans have discovered. So it would be very naive of us to think it can't or won't do so again. Have a Happy New Year, while we are still here to enjoy.

on the one hand yes, it is hard especially for older people to adapt to the way of young people and there values, like couples living together without being in a marriage is still hard for many older people, but then many older people have lived through many changes and fared out well,
i grew up with a black and white tv, I learned to type on an old manual typewriter, then went to an electric typewriter and finally a computer.
when I first started to work in an office there was no computer system to do the office work, now it is very hard to find an office that doesn't use a computer in some capacity.
my mom used to do the washing with an old fashioned ringer washer,
it was the custom to wear only black to a funeral as a sign of respect, now people where any color they feel like it.
older people stayed in a bad marriage rather than get divorced, but today people get divorced at a drop of a hat.
and so on

When woman were treated with dignity and our flag was something also respected. Those are values that we should never get rid of and I believe since these things have started to slide our society has as well. You see people pushing and shoving people to be first in line. Usually at the expense of others. See the clerk who was killed in a NY Walmart just before Christmas. We see young people talking, launghing and sitting with their hats on as the flag of their country passes by. You see men abusing woman and taking them for granted. What ever happened to respect for our fellow man and for our country. These are values sorely lacking today that I would like to see more of in our society today.

Society, at least the bulk of society, seems to need social stability if it is to maintain moral and ethical standards, and the changes have unfortunately put real strain on those things.
It should be possible to adjust, at least for the more flexible minds among us, without the social structure collapsing, but it seems that felxibility is very much a minority trait.
A lot of things seen as values, however, particularly in the sexual, political, and religious areas, are culturally specific, and vary enormously from place to place and time to time. There are certain values, however, which seem to remain constant over long periods and in all cultures, particularly to do with human interaction. Co-operation, altruism, respect for elders (where deserved), and all those elements contained within the various Golden Rules and criminal codes. Those, I feel, should be emphasised and maintained; the culturally labile stuff should be ignored, unless it impinges on personal freedom, as in sexual moralism, jingoistic patriotism, and religious bigotry.

| | 8. Pose123 (5844) | 1 year ago | Hi bantilesroger, You have raised a very important question here, are we capably of keeping up with changes or are they coming just too fast? First of all I want to say clearly that I don't think we have to give up all the old values, but first we have to decide which of these values are serving us better. What is really important in life? I expect you want a better life for yourself and your family, almost everyone does. Many people would want to see peace, so lets set our mind to a way of achieving peace. There is a saying that peace much begin with peace in our own hearts. If people really knew each other better we would find that there isn't really much difference in what we all want, certainly not enough to kill someone over. You see the question is, "What do we mean by the old values"? It may be something that we'll have to think long and hard about. Blessings.

As far as giving up values I think that we have already given up to many of those. In evidence of this I would point to the increase in violent crime and in particular violent crime committed by children. Because we have given up the right to discipline our children they act out more and more.

Well I believe in old values as they are a good teaching, so I will keep all for them, but today people don't believe in anything so that is why this world is in a terrible place.
