Why do you think Oldmaids and Old Bachelors are grumpy?

To be honest I think that's a lot of bunk..LOL. When I was a little girl, next door to me was a elderly woman who had never gotten married. She was the kindest, most lively woman you could ever know. She had a generous heart and was giving and loving and became something of a second grandmother to me. She had a well rounded lifestyle, traveled, so she certainly didn't fit the grumpy old maid stereotypes. As a by the way, I never married either (yet)---and in no way do I think I'm grumpy only due to having a very positive outlook in life myself.

Actually my experiences haven't been like that. Especially single women, whom I think would object to be called an old maid. lol Sometimes it seems that they have a lighter load, a less stressed demeanor, which makes sense if they don't have children to worry about, or a husband. Sure it can be difficult, but single men and women who are older also have a lot more flexibility in their lives.

I have also seen that in one of the bank managers in our city. She's in a good disposition but then again, all her brothers and sister are single too, they still lived under one roof. Perhaps stress wasn't with them since all were the same, I guess it happens when it's only one who's unmarried and the rest have families of their own.

Well, it's no secret that my family's odd so I'm not sure if the examples I have count.
Most of our old maids and old bachelors have been happy party animals with eventful lives. *shrugs* My great Uncle...the one who was struck by lightning...four times I think it was...was someone who could drink and drink and hardly feel a buzz, he did it for fun, because people were amazed by this ability of his (it did end up killing him, but he never knew what hit him, so it's not really sad). He never married.
My Aunt Ruby loved the high life but never married, always too busy with that part or that, and she was well-loved in our family.

because they are jealous that other people are having a much better life than them?
I have no idea. But my mum is working under an old maid. and BOY.. she is a slave driver. All day she thinks nothing but work work work and she expects people under her to work like there is no day and no night.
And most naturally she cringe when she see couples with children going all lovey dovey with each other.. so that gave me the conclusion that she is jealous.
