Safeway supermarkets, facing a decline in same store sales, says it will be lowering prices in 2009, including on milk, and focusing more on store brands. http://www.walletpop.com/article/_a/bbdp/kellogg-raising-prices-on-cereal-pop/300079?icid=200100397x1216197725x1201112983 My question is why did they wait so long? If they can do it, then why didnt they do it before? It just goes to show you, they have alot of control in whats happening? What do you say>

2. kijiky (582) | 12 months ago | Well here in Kentucky we don't have Safeway supermarkets, but we have Winn Dixie's and last year they all started to close due to a decline in their sales. Our largest supermarkets now are Kroger's and Meijers and now Wal-Mart with their super stores are coming up really fast to the top. I like shopping at Wal-Mart the most now because I can do my everything shopping all at one time, clothing, office, animals, garden, food. One stop shopping. And in the Wal-Mart I go to I also can do my banking, and get my nails done and my hair!!! I love it. But I end up walking out completely broke!! lol Lol

3. momoftwingirls (622) | 12 months ago | Yeah, I have been purchasing store brand products since the "recession", oops, I mean depression...The reason for lowering prices is our government (you gotta love them) is not extending credit to grocery stores.I heard about the government not extending credit to supermarkets, but I can not find any articles on it.

With so many stores getting into the grocery market (our local Walmart just expanded to become a super store)the days of keeping your prices high are gone (that is if you want to stay in business). If they go out of business so many people lose their jobs which then causes them to not be able to buy the things they need.... It's just a vicious circle.

5. wolfie34 (13865) | 12 months ago | I didn't realize Safeways operated in other countries, here in the UK they went out of business some time ago now, I think Morrissons bought most of their shops and moved in but Safeways is no longer in the UK. I never did shop there I didn't like the stores to be honest and I much prefer Tesco or Sainsburys. They have to lower prices because of the competition, if their prices are too dear people will shop elsewhere, it's not like petrol we have no other alternative, with shopping thankfully we do!

6. us2owls (2034) | 12 months ago | Well our local store here in Sheffield UK was Safeway when I first started spending time back here. I haven't come across one in the USA. The one near us here sold out to Tesco and I shop there quite often but find a lot of their prices overboard. I prefer Morrisons and when I am in the USA I do a lot of my shopping at Krogers and County Market stores along with Wal-Mart.

7. jillhill (11664) | 12 months ago | I think any corporation is going to try to keep up the profits as long as people buy at a certain price then they get what they want.....when people pull back and don't buy the products then they have to do something to make up for what they are losing....like us not driving as much when the gas prices got so high....they say that people haven't returned to driving as much so now there is too much oil again. They just want to line their own pockets with as much as they can.

8. tyc415 (4492) | 12 months ago | I wish we had a Safeway supermarket here. I have not been to one of those in a long time. I agree and it also shows that if they can do it then other grocery stores can do it also especially the big chain supermarkets since they order and buy in bigger volumes therefore they pay a lower price for the things to begin with.
