Rent, Buy, or Build?

Would you prefer to rent your home, buy your home, or build a home? Why? If you would prefer to build a home, would you want to design it yourself or have one built from someone else's design?
Personally, I plan to one day design and build my a home for my family. I want to have the experience of designing our home the way we want it to suit our needs. I think it would be a lot of fun and I would have a reminder each and every day of the dream I started as a child.

Hello lynnemg! I am not good in designing actually so I would rather buy a house. I just want to see it for myself if the house I will buy is quiet simple but elegant not too small but not too big as well.

I know you have a talent in designing. You would not think of designing your own house if you don't have it..

I think the best thing for me to do would be to buy a house, and then renovate the inside (and maybe the outside too, who knows?) to look the way I want it to. But building a house sure sounds like fun too!

I"m currently building a new home right now. I've found that if you shop carefully and negotiate with the builder the right way, you can build a new home for less money than it would cost to buy an established home. Then, when the home is complete, the value of it is higher than the money you paid for it, which means instant equity.
Of course this only works if you're willing to work out what the median house price is in any area and then make sure you're building something that will give value but not cost too much to create.
I'd never pay a landlord rent to live in their home or pay off their mortgage. That's wasted money. But I would happily BUY several properties and let other people struggle and stress for 5 days a week in a job they hate to pay ME rent ;)
