The latest outbreak of salmonella in peanut butter products is really scary. What frightens me is that these incidents are becoming commonplace. I suppose we are now at the point where we only have to wait a few months to be informed of the latest food scare. What do you think would be the solution to this growing problem? I know that it would be more costly but I can't help but think that we need tighter restrictions at every level of the food production industry. Sure, we have had contamination scares in the past, but more and more in recent times the results are life-threatening. I have become a label-reader on everything I purchase. I want to know where my food comes from! I feel that these actions have become a must. Do you worry about where your food comes from? A local TV news show aired this report on the current situation:http://www.whiotv.com/health/18501784/detail.html#-

I have been following this story for some days now and it is quite frightening. Several people have died. It frightens me because it's not as easy as avoiding peanut butter, but all products that have peanuts in them. Apparently this covers a lot of food.

I do read the labels these days. This was something I never considered years ago. Sure, perhaps we didn't have so much information on labels, but it also seems that we didn't have so many problems with harmful food.

I believe that most people are doing their homework these days, Monk, when it comes to shopping for food. With the passage of time it does seem that food producers and handlers have become lax in their responsibility.

I totally agree there are way to many of them lately and we do need to have tighter restrictions on food inspection, Maple Canada has enforced tighter restrictions since their wisteria scare last year.

I think, winterose, that this is the way of things for the future regarding our food. With food becoming more readily available from places that are far away, it is adding to the problem.

That is terrible. I am so scared to have something like this happen to my family also. I am so skeptical about the food that I eat anymore.

We all have to be more vigilant, stephcjh, where our food is concerned. I don't see that it's going to get much better.

One has to wonder what the heck is going on here. I mean here we are, technically more advanced than our ancestors, yet there weren't so many outbreaks of salmonella or e.coli back then, and it seems there are more outbreaks of some kind of contaminated food all the time..so where are we going wrong? And it seems our FDA is slow in discovering contamination outbreaks in food until AFTER many people have gotten sickened or even died. Why isn't food in general tested before it reaches the shelves of our stores??

Crazy how this keeps happening. You really don't know what foods to trust anymore. Perhaps we need to go back to the simple days where we prepared all or most of our food by scratch. Even peanut butter was made this way.
