Tom Hanks calls Mormons UnAmerican |
| |
| Tom Hanks calls Mormons who supported Prop 8 Unamerican in a recent interview. What about the people of other religions that supported Prop 8, are they Un-American too? In recent years we have heard others get mad about Palin's "real Americans" comment and some people being told not supporting Bush during a war was unAmerican. What is unAmerican? Personally I think people are starting to use the term to label people who do not agree with them. But really that is what the country was founded on....voicing your opinion even if it was different that what other people thought. That is American. Tell me what you think? Should people be called UnAmerican because they have different views? | | | | | |

| | Yep you are right. He picked the easy target. If he would have spoken out about the fact that 70% of the African Americans that voted for Obama voted for prop 8. He would be called a racist...so he is shifting the blame to a small group that is not popular. Why can't celebrities just stay out of it. Especially Tom Hanks...he is the executive producer of "Big Love". Talk about an oximoron. | | | |

| | Hey, thanks for reminding me about Tom Hanks being the executive producer of Big Love. I'd totally forgotten about that. I guess he must have been referring to the "bad" Mormons at the compound instead of the "good" ones in the Henricksen family...lol! Annie | | | |

| | I don't think anyone should be called UnAmerican unless they're saying it about a known terrorist! That was my absolute biggest beef during the Bush Administration, when anyone who didn't support the Iraq War or all of Bush's policies regarding that was called unpatriotic or anti-American. It was only a select few who said that, but I found it offensive. It was a big part of what made me dislike Sarah Palin. I could disagree with her politics and still like her as a person but when she started that nonsense at her rallies it just ticked me off to no end. I've always liked Tom Hanks but if he said that I definitely disagree with him and think it was wrong for him to have said it. This is the first I've heard of that interview so I'd have to read or hear his exact words to form an opinion but from what you've said it wasn't right to say. We all have freedom of speech in this country; we also have the freedom to think someone's an a$$hole when they say certain things! Annie | | | | | | |

| | Do a search engine on it. It was all over the news. I can understand not liking the fact that prop 8 pasted. I think it is discrimation too. But I am not going to call someone or a group of people unamerican just because they voted for something I did not believe in. | | | |

| | I finally did Google it and I see he's apologized. http://www.foxnews.com/st... "Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California's Proposition 8 as 'un-American,'" the actor said in a statement through his publicist. "I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination." "But everyone has a right to vote their conscience; nothing could be more American," the statement continues. "To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are 'un-American' creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use 'un- American' lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have." An apology doesn't undo what what he originally said, but at least he DID apologize. I think he nailed it about how no one should use "un-American" lightly or in haste. It's now the new buzz word for anyone some people disagree with and that's all wrong. I know how angry it made me when I've thought I was being called un-American or unpatriotic for my beliefs. Annie | | | |
