What is Being Glossed over about the Coming Digital Television Conversion

All the stations are talking about getting the converter box or cable or what not if you are in an affected area. But what few are mentioning or if they mention it, it is just briefly in passing, is that you may also need a new antenna if you don't have cable or dish or something like that. If you use rabbit ears, a converter box may not be enough for all of your stations. If you are in an area where some of your analog stations come in a little snowy with your present antenna, then because digital is all or nothing, you will get nothing on those stations. Even an amplified antenna may not be good enough. I live in the foothills of the local mountain that has all the broadcast antennas on its top and one of the stations I watch on a small TV in the room where I have my workout equipment comes in snowy and I'm not even really in the "shadow" of the mountain. My set there has both analog and digital tuning and when that station has done tests, I get the message "digital channel strength too low" and no picture or sound even with an amplified indoor antenna. I have cable for my main TV but I don't want to pay extra to get it in another room where I use it so much less. So you should be aware that just getting a converter box or having a TV with a digital tuner may not be enough if you are in a poor reception area.

I completely understand and to me this is just dumb that they are doing it. This is the first of many things they will move over off that frequency so that the government can free up that analog space to watch us and control us. Don't buy into they are making things better they are freeing all of that space for a reason.

The main reason they are freeing up the space is for cell phone usage and things like that.

i dod not know you would also need an antenna!! Man, I just threw a bunch away. I did not think that we would ever need them again.

Well if you have cable or something and think you always will, then you probably don't. But if you have an analog TV that you want to use with a converter box, then yes you still need an antenna and it may have to be a better antenna than what you had.

Thank you for the information, I am pretty sure we are OK. But I am sure there are many that are really confused about this whole thing.

When the conversion happens I'm just giving up TV for awhile. I figure the time off will be more productive and when I save up enough to get the flat screen high def TV that I want, then I'll watch TV again.

When that time comes just remember what I wrote if you are going to try to use an antenna rather then cable or satellite.

Yeah, your advice is helpful. A lot of people who got their converter boxes are going to be disappointed when they find out they still don't have any TV reception.
