Are you planning to grow your own vegetables this year? |
| |
| With the credit crunch making us all need to tighten our purse strings it seems like a good idea to grow some of our own vegetables this year. Last year I grew Chilli's and they were very successful and tonight I've been looking on Ebay at what seeds are on offer. There are loads of variety's of chilli's on there I'm going to get some called satan's kiss that sound great and are an unusual shape and some jalepeno's. I've also seen some great tomato seeds you grow in hanging baskets that give loads of fruit and some really big pumpkins. Also some purple cauliflowers similar to the ones I saw Jamie Oliver cooking and purple carrots. I'm not sure I'll have room to grow all of those plants but I'm going to try anyway I can always give some plants away. Do you have any vegetables planned for your garden or containers? | | | | | |

| | Well, we probably won't plant vegetables as I'm not very good at taking care of any living thing but my kids but we do plan on planting pumpkins this spring and giving some of them away to our daughter's friends and our family. I think it will be a good expierence for my girls to see them grow into giant pumpkins from just a little seed. As far as chili's, we don't eat any kind of peppers so I will stay far away from them! I may try my hand at some corn though...Hmmm... | | | | | | |

| | Pumpkins are great for kids, and I found this variety of tomato that grows in hanging baskets that sound good and would save space. | | | |

| | My sister and I planted pumpkins when we were kids. My dad gave us a piece of land that he hadn't done anything with yet. Then we went away on a very long vacation. When we cam back the pumpkins were all over the place. They grew all over the dirt patch, on the sidewalk and into the street. It didn't make the neighbors happy. My dad asked why they didn't just cut them back. The neighbors thought that we wanted all the pumpkins, so they didn't do anything. Heck we were just dumb kids that planted to many seeds. | | | |

| | sorry to hear that it is satisfying eating something you grew yourself, some vegetables are really easy to grow and can even be grown indoors. | | | |

| | I'll probably just plant my usual: tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and potatoes, along with the raspberries, strawberries, garlic and chives thaat come up every year. It will be interesting to see what the squirrels plant this year. Last year it was pumpkins in the front yard and a sunflower in the backyard. And they didn't even share! | | | | | | |

| | My husband and I would love to be able to grow our own vegetables, but we live in an apartment right in the middle of town. We also live in the basement, so we can't even grow a garden outside of our window, or on a balcony. If we had a house, we would definitely grow our own vegetables. | | | | | | |

| | I grew chilli's indoors last year and going to grow more chilli's and some tomatoes this year. I have got a light kitchen window though, in a basement it must be hard to get any light to growing plants. | | | |

| | I love having a garden. There is nothing like going out in your own backyard and picking some fresh vegies, they always taste so much better. I have been having a garden for many years. | | | | | | |

| | All I've successfully grown so far is some chilli's on my kitchen window, but they were so successful it's made me braver. I live in a flat but the building has a garden I'm going to put some out there, and my boy friends flat has a garden too so I'll have some down there. | | | |

| | Heyya nancyrowina! I have been considering growing a few veggies of my own. I have grown tomatos but I think this upcoming year I may try some other things too. I'd like to try fruits. I am a huge eater of strawberries and blueberries. Maybe I'll try some of those. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, we do every year, we have a small backyard and have put in a garden twice in two different locations trying to find the right spot in our yard...and last year we decided to just do potted vegetables, and it worked out great so we will do that again this year. We always do tomatoes, and green pepper, and twice we have done cucumbers..but they dont do well in pots so i am going to figure a way this year... even when we had our apartment and a balcony we planted in pots on there two with little veggie plants... we love our own grown...so much tastier. oh my husband does Jalepeno and a different hot pepper every year, but always the Jalepeno...and tries another... he loves hot foods, and every year they turn out well...I cant wait for spring and to start ours. | | | | | | |

| | The seeds I've got recommend wearing gloves to even handle them so they must make a really hot plant, I like hot food but can only take a certain amount of heat before I just can't taste the food so it's pointless. The best thing about growing your own chilli's is it really is loads cheaper than buying them in the shops, it can cost nearly £2 just for 3 really small chilli's in a bag. | | | |

| | hi nancy, we dont have a garden and we only have a small balcony. We once grew chilies as well and we still do have some of them in the freezer, frozen whole, to put into chili con carne or meat dishes. I would also like to grow some Jalapenos. The idea with the tomatoes in the hanging basket is a great one and I hope it works out fine for you. | | | | | | |

| | I hope the tomatoes are as good as the pictures I've seen as they seem to give a lot of fruit and are very small for tomato plants. The variety is called "Tiny Tom" and I think there are some other small varieties. | | | |
