http://www.wyff4.com/news... country was attacked by Middle East terrorists, hard working Americans are forced to prove that they aren't terrorists before being allowed to fly. Large American corporations import items with lead base paint from China putting our children & grandchildren at risk, small mom & pop companies are forced to prove that they aren't using lead based paint in their American made products. Does anybody beside me see a problem with this picture??? A large portion of our problems come from outside our country & American citizens are forced to prove that they are honest. This company is located in a town of 25,000 people not far from where I live. They make educational toys for children. They buy pasta & dye it for craft projects. They cut foam into shapes & dye it in bright colors so children can learn. They sell these items by the bag. Most of their products are sold for under $10.00 per bag, yet the cost for the required tests will cost them around $800.00 per item. Do the math. I'm sure they're NOT the only company affected by this problem. It seems to me that testing a batch of product might (& I do mean might) be reasonable. Then they could spread the cost of the tests over the entire lot. To test individually will break the bank at small companies like this one. Parents & schools will NOT pay over $800.00 per bag. (At that price there will be NO profit.) When this started, the government had meant to even enforce this on consignment shops, yard sales, etc. They backed down when the public began to protest. Are these small companies any less important than the consignment shops or yard sales??? They employ more taxpayers than most consignment shops. This company has NO history of lead based paint use. The nature of the items they sell precludes using lead based paints. Since they are an American company, charge the owner with attempted murder if they use any lead based paints. (They don't import their products to sell.) Do you have any companies like this one in your area??? We are bailing out the banks who still are not loaning money. We are bailing out the auto industry who still aren't selling many cars. Why can't we protect the small companies who work hard to grow & employ more taxpayers??? If we can financially assist the large corporations, why can't we help the little guy???

That law is ridiculous. We should charge a tariff on all imports and apply the law to them only. Our own products list all ingredients used in them-by law! We do not need this new law, we need parents who will buy American and we need to make it affordable to businesses like the one you're citing to do business here in this country.

I agree. This country was made by the sweat & hard work of mom & pop companies. They care about the country. Corporations have proven over & over they just do not care about the average person nor the country!!!

Yes, I see the problem. We don't have the same standards for our cheap imports but we have to have all the I's dotted and their T's crossed.. it doesn't seem quite right that we can import goods that will kill our kids and pets, as long as they are cheap products. By the time there is a recall there usually is more than one death. The imports should be governed just as strictly as the small business person here.

I like the way you think!!! If our regulations were as strict on the imports as they are on our small businesses, we'd be buying better products.

I sympathize with your concern. I live in a third world country and it is very difficult to make a living because large corporations have taken over the country. They suck the goodness out of our country and bring it to their country to enjoy. Large multinational companies have done this systematically leaving our country barren and lifeless.

Since my country is one of those countries, I apologize. If we could ever get back our small businesses, you'd have one less problem!!!

I agree!!

Make all our own products and buy our own products. Make sure all ingredients sold are have random tests by the company not by the company buying the ingredient, but if we do not have this crap to start with, I do not see a problem.

Also, do not allow anyone who is not a US citizen to work here (no visas) and not stay for more than a certain amount of time, unless they prove that they are working towards becoming a citizen.

Charger companies and people who hire illegal aliens so much money in fines that it would cause them to go bankrupt if they did. If there are no jobs for aliens, they will not come.

Do not give free medical to aliens, or schooling. Make everyone prove that they are a citizen or they get nothing.

Companies who outsource jobs from the USA must pay the same wage to foreigners that they would pay in the USA. Then charge them high rates to ship the stuff back into the US. Then it will not be worth it for them to outsource.

I agree with everything you say. Write what you said to the president's office. They WANT to hear from you!!

The problem is, in essence WE have become the problem since the mind-set for just about anything is running and doing things that is "cost-effective"---very few products in America are actually made here anymore...(I actually faint when I see something that says Made in the USA). Even items that are "distributed" under an American label the parts of the item are usually made elsewhere. For instance all those recalls from the biggest toy "manufacturer" in America, meaning Mattel..but were the toys actually made here...a big NO. So since our companies rely so much on getting cheap items by the gross, made and manufactured elsewhere by essentially slave type labor, they can make a huge profit by sticking the American label on the product. So since we in a sense have allowed this to happen now everyone is going to suffer, whether the product is made elsewhere or here-and no, it's far from being fair--I think a lot of mom and pop type establishments here are going to suffer big time due to that new law

As a person who has an itty bitty online business, I was scared when I first heard about this. It doesn't affect me though but I would have no worries because I don't use anything lead based in my products. But there are many that I know who are being affected in the handmade realm. They don't use anything at all lead based but they have to pay to get their stuff tested and as you stated, it's about 800 bucks to do it. It's putting a lot of crafty artists out of business and nobody seems to care because they aren't Chrysler. They are just stay at home moms trying to make some extra cash (or support) their families. This whole thing is outrageous and ridiculous to blame our country for what has happened in others. Small companies care more about their product, they aren't putting out volume. They are putting out art and I'm sure safer than anything you can mass purchase. It's unfair and wrong- the government should be ashamed of themselves for this travesty and it should stop now. Maybe they could "bailout" these labs who are charging 800.00 and maybe these labs could lower their prices for small businesses. But I think that is too hopeful unfortunately.

I think the whole thing is crazy. I also think that our government just needs to ban imported products, if it's such a problem. Make sure that our companies are not manufacturing lead paints. That should solve that problem.

I know, It would cause other more serious problems to stop importing, but it's just a thought.

I can understand why we need to protect our children from led based paint but I am with you this is going to far. Why can't they prove the paint is lead free from the paint manufactures and not the toy companies? Why are they only attacking the toy companies when they should be attacking the paint manufactures? As far as I know paint made in the USA does not have lead in it why can't they prove where they got the paint?

Why aren't they attacking the foreign countries who make the lead based paint toys...or the US companies buying them??? Why put the smaller, honest companies out of business??? thumbdown thumbdown thumbdown
