Things the Bible does NOT say |
|
There are common sayings that are attributed to the Bible and are actually not even found there. Here are a few;
"God helps those who help themselves"
"Cleanliness is next to godliness"
"Money is the root of all evil" - this one is a half-quote. It should be "the love money........."
Can you think of others?

rocketj1 (2217) | 1 year ago | You are right. The concept of the trinity is found throughout scripture but not the actual word. Thanks:)

| ptty_noel (78) | 11 months ago | I dont see the word trinity in the bible. I didn't even see any scipture in the bible that says that God, his son and his holy spirit is one. However please look at the following scripture: Matthew 26:39-: "And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, "My father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me neverless not my will but as thou wilt" So if the father and the son were not distint individuals, that prayer would have been meaningless as Jesus would have beeen praying to himself, and his will would of necessity have been the father's will.
Please note that this is only one of the many scriptures that shows the thre is no trinity and the point is supported by the bible.

rocketj1 (2217) | 11 months ago | ptty noel, Just because the word is not found in the Bible does not mean that the concept is not clearly outlined in there. To learn more about what the Bible says about Christ's deity and the existence of God as the "three in one" check out the book "Why you should believe in the trinity" by Robert Bowman.

2. MonkOVision (936) | 1 year ago | These are excellent misconceptions often spouted as truths.
Another one that irks me to no end is, 'There but for the grace of God go I'or something similar. It assumes that God's grace is not for everyone.

rocketj1 (2217) | 1 year ago | I guess that one could depend on the interpretation. I think that if I were to use it, I would mean that someone's situation (like being a criminal in jail or being born poor) could just as easily be MY situation. That I didn't necessarily "earn" my lot in life but that I am only here through God's grace. I need not feel superior.
I think you are right in that it is not found in scripture. Thanks:)
| |
|
|
MonkOVision (936) | 1 year ago | It could easily be your situation, but when you invoke God into it, it supposes that God has prevented you from being in that situation, while not caring enough to prevent the other from being in that situation. Your own example of someone being born poor presupposes that there is something wrong with being poor, (even though God favours the poor, according to scripture) and that God prevented you from being born poor. Or am I reading you wrong?

rocketj1 (2217) | 1 year ago | Someone starving is not more blessed than one who is not!
God is sovereign. The Bible says that he chooses the times and places for me. I did not choose my parents, he did. I did not choose my era, God did. So when someone in hurting or in trouble or having a problem, I should not feel better than they are simply because they have ended up there. It could just as easily be me.
I can see though how you feel this saying can be used in a completely different way to say that God is more gracious to some. That's why I think we are both happy that it is not a scriptural saying but one made up by humans. Right?

MonkOVision (936) | 1 year ago | I see more clearly what you are trying to say. Thank you.

3. Pose123 (5857) | 1 year ago | Hi rocketj1, People have a habit of saying something is in the Bible, even if it isn't. Someone once told me that Jesus said, "do as I say, not as I do". If someone professes to be a Christian, I think they should at least read the Bible, not quote what someone else has told them. Blessings.

rocketj1 (2217) | 1 year ago | Wow! That IS a bad one! That would assume that Jesus was doing something wrong but that we should just ignore it and follow his words only. This is a saying that most people use to indicate that they are not a great example to follow. Totally the opposite of Christ! Thanks, my friend:)

kiwibee (182) | 1 year ago | Jesus was talking about the Pharisees, not himself. He actually told people to do what they said (when they were propounding God's law) but not as they did. That's because they were hypocrites... they didn't live up to what they were preaching.

5. AmbiePam (15472) | 1 year ago | You picked one that people quote and it bugs me. I hardly ever hear someone correctly say the love of money is the root of all evil. And if the Bible actually said cleanliness is next to godliness, I'd have to start thinking maybe God was a bit OCD. Can you imagine Him saying that to someone? Kind of funny. Not OCD, just imagining God actually saying it...

peedielyn (721) | 1 year ago | I actually heard that quote in a song my the smashing pumpkins. I thought about it over and over and over--I have OCD. But my point is, I went looking for these quotes-especially Cleanliness is next to Godliness and I couldn't find it in the Bible. My Grandpa said that to me one time--his house was imaculate and I asked him why he said it. He said that "If Jesus Christ was to come into your house right now and have to base His opinion about you on the look of your house, what would He say?" On that note, because of my mental disorder, my house stays clean constantly--It's my conscience I think.
The words of the song is "Lonliness is cleanliness, and cleanliness is godliness, and God is empty.....just like me." I love the Band, Just didn't like this part of the verse.
Has anyone ever heard or seen the phrase " Idle hands is the devil's playground"? This is one that I have heard since I was a little girl. I know what it means but have yet to see it in the Bible.

AmbiePam (15472) | 1 year ago | I'm just glad God looks at our hearts and not our homes. My sink backed up AGAIN! It flooded my kithen. And would you believe the maintenance man never answered my page? So if God went into my kitchen, I'm pretty sure he'd wrinkle his nose. lol

6. ErrollLeVant (2476) | 1 year ago | one thing that most think is in Scripture but is not, is that there were three wise men that visited Jesus after his birth. The assumption is made from there having been three gifts given!
| |
| |
|
|
rocketj1 (2217) | 1 year ago | Very true. We only guess that there were three because of the three gifts, as you say. People also put them in the nativity scene (myself included) when they really visited Jesus in Egypt when he was probably about 2 years old.

10. fasttalker (2195) | 1 year ago | Here is just a few that I can think of.
"Spare The Rod Spoil The Child" "He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him." Proverbs 13:14
"God works in mysterious ways" True...but not actually worded this way in the Bible.
"Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." I think thatis a Ben Franklin quote
That's all I can come up with! LOL
