| | as far as i know, the two instruments are different. the bass has 4 strings, and a guitar has 6 strings. you don't need to learn how to play the guitar to learn how to play the bass. as far as which to purchase first, i'm unsure about that. good luck learning! | | | | | | |

| | No, it certainly isn't necessary to learn acoustic or electric guitar before learning bass guitar. The right hand technique is rather different anyway. Once you have learned bass guitar you will find it a lot easier to learn guitar because the bass guitar's four strings are just like the four bass strings of the guitar only an octave lower. You will find that, with the bass guitar, you tend to learn scales and scale patterns, rather than chords. You should, however, know what notes belong to the chords because putting a good bass line over a chord sequence involves knowing the scales that belong to each chord. It isn't essential to learn conventional music notation but, if you do, you would find more work as a session or band musician. If you plan to play with a jazz or rock (used in the broadest sense) group, you will need to be able to read chord symbols (e.g. C, G7, Am7, Eb dim &c). A bassist will know the notes involved in each chord (as if it were an arpeggio) and how to construct a good bass line using the notes of the scales that belong to each chord. | | | | | | |

| | I don't have any recommendations on a good guitar to choose. Don't forget that you will need an amp (and ideally one specifically for a bass instrument: the power of a bass can often destroy the speaker if it is not made to deal with a bass instrument). The best way to go about it is to first decide how much you can afford and then to look out for a second hand instrument at that price. If you can get advice from a teacher or a friend who plays, it would be a very good idea. When buying a second hand instrument, the action (the height of the strings above the fingerboard) and the balance (whether the instrument hangs naturally when you are wearing it) are probably the two most important things to check for. Always spend some time feeling whether the instrument is comfortable to you before deciding on buying it. When buying an amp, it is very important to see that it works, so it's essential to have an instrument to try it with. Play with the controls to see that there are no dead spots or crackles and, as I said, make sure it is made for bass instruments (the name will usually have 'Bass' in it somewhere). | | | |

| | I am on my way to learn acoustic guitar but I have a friend who started learning with bass guitar. I have heard that bass guitar is easier to learn, I don't have a point for that, that's what I have heard. For me, I prefer acoustic guitar better because it sounds better for me. I take lesson at home but plan to find a teacher who could show me basic tips to ease my home lessons which I am doing by myself. I use a book for beginners and much useful information on the net. | | | | | | |

| | I decided to buy a fretless bass guitar to play in a wedding band. It helped me a lot that I knew already clasical guitar, spanish guitar and folk guitar. Why? because for the bass you need to play scales, like in classical guitar, but you have also to play the bass line like in the finger piking style of Chet Atkins. Also the 4 strings of the bass are 1 octave lower than a guitar. Then the right hand. In flamenco and spanish guitar, they don't use a pick. Take a look of Paco De Lucia playing with Mac Laughling and Al De Meola. On You Tube. You can see Paco De Lucia doesn't use a pick like most of bass players. You need a good method to learn how to play bass. You need also a band, to have more motivation. You can also listen to a CD and try to find the bass line of a song. I wish you lots od success !. | | | | | | |

| | It isnt a must, but it would help if you know at least the basics in playing the acoustic guitar. It will help you when you started to study playing bass. I am not really good in playing the bass but because I know how to play the acoustic guitar, I can also play basic bass beats :) Good luck! | | | | | | |
