"If it is to be, it is up to me!"

Do you like this little saying? It means that if you want something to happen - and if it's right for it to happen (that is quite important!) - then it is YOU that's going to make it happen. Different people will have different ways of thinking about it. Do you think that it's possible to do absolutely anything (if we want to enough) regardless of whether it's good or evil? Do you, perhaps, think that we can do much more than we think we can do, so long as it fits in with 'what is to be'? What do you think about our involvement in this world? Can we make things happen? Are the things we make happen always 'good'? Do you think there is a 'guiding principle' (whether it's a personal God or a sort of 'universal rule')? There have been many times when I have wondered why something was invented or discovered at a particular time rather than before. Why, for example, when all the technology was available, didn't the Romans invent printing or others discover electricity (there is some evidence to suggest that it was known as a curiosity rather than a practicality long, long ago). Do you think that discoveries and inventions only come in their proper time and that, therefore, there are many things still to be learned but that the 'right time' is not yet?

Owlwings my dear deep thinking friend! I truly believe that we have the power to do whatever we want to do if we believe we can. Most people have low expectations of themselves and what they are capable of doing. Kind of like "the secret" I guess, but I have not read the book or seen the movie. I believe a higher power can have a great influence over what happens or doesn't happen, and that it has to be the 'right time' as you have said. If it is not the right time for something, it will come about when it is the right time and we need to be patient and accept that it will be when it should be.

I like the saying but I'm not sure I agree with it. I think you should be able to do anything you want as long as it doesn't involve hurting, upsetting or demeaning other people. That's not a religious thing just what my parents believed. I have often wondered why the ancient Chinese or Egyptians or Romans didn't invent electricity and did come to the conclusion that there were many other things to learn before it became necessary. So it looks like I do think things come as and when they are needed.

I do like that saying, even though I've never heard it before. I agree with it completely. If I thought 'I can't possibly do that', then I probably wouldn't even attempt it, but I now have a 'I think I can..............I KNOW I can' attitude instead. If I didn't think like the latter I wouldn't be attempting a Level 3 Diploma in Holistic Therapies, admitidly it does seem to be a little more difficult for me to do than for some of the others, but they don't have the problems I have. I'm happy because I know I'm doing the best I can and I'm happy because I've passed all the theory tests I've done so far, if I'd have had the attitude of 'I can't do that', then I wouldn't have ever known if I could have done it or not. As for the 'guiding principle', I think that everything happens for a reason and what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I also think that everyones destiny is mapped out for them with some of the major things in their lives, but I also think that your final destiny "hasn't been written yet", to quote Doc Brown (from Back To The Future), you have two paths in my opinion, you chose which path to follow....for instance you may see someone has dropped their wallet on the floor, it is jam packed with money........you can see who dropped it and they are still there, do you hand it back or do you keep it? Either way you're creating your own destiny, one way you could be destined for a life of crime, the other a life of helping others. (Obviously that's a very black and white example, just to simplify things). Another one could be, 'do I ask him/her out or do I just leave it?', one way you could end up happily married, the other way you could end up miserable for the rest of your life hankering after the one that got away. My beliefs are actually a little more complicated than I've room to go into here, but that's the basics of it. I also think that there is a time and a place for everything, maybe the world wasn't ready for electricity the first time round, maybe if electricity had been properly invented then we wouldn't have had certain other inventions.

Well, for me when it comes to things that are to be, it is with the help of God that things happen for me as well. But it is True, that you have to help things happen as God does not just throw something in your lap, and say here you go now do something with it. You do have to work for it, and if he feels it is something that you will be able to handle than it should happen. But at the same time especially in Careers in life if you sit and do nothing than you will get nothing, but if you spend time bettering yourself and always moving forward you will be rewarded for that as well.

A little reminiscent of my Que Sera Sera discussion. lol Generally, yes, you need to make things happen. I don't believe opportunities just fall in people's laps all that often. Why... when all the technology was available, didn't the Romans invent printing or others discover electricity Interesting question. Their focus was elsewhere, I guess. Roads were important to them to transport armies and goods. Plumbing was important to them partly because baths were an important part of the culture. Printing probably wasn't invented because there were more than enough scribes and nobody felt a need. Just a guess...

I totally agree with the 'no one felt a need' bit! The intriguing thought for me, though, is that if we were able to step back in time and show them these (relatively) simple technologies, what would they do? Would they have run us out of town as sorcerers? Would they have said 'Cool, but what's the point?' or would they have taken it on board and found a need? It often seems to me that new technology is occasionally satisfying a need but mostly creating one where none existed before.

I suspect if you found the right Roman who could see the value of mass publishing things for propaganda purposes or whatever, they would have jumped all over it.

I really like that quote. I think we are capable of achieving anything and everything in our path. But certainly, somethings will be recognized at a better time then the other. A lot has to do with the timing but if you are desperate and passionate enough to make things happen whether the time is right or not, people have the ability to do so, I believe.

Yes I believe that if we really want to achieve something, we can do it. The urge and the sincerity should be there, it should rather be like an obsession. Whether its good or evil is a matter of debate as each is welcome to her own views. Regarding inventions and discoveries, you may be right that each thing has its own defined moment in the history of time and each individual is pre-destined in this world.

It is the same as the saying "Making this possible or making things happen". If we want something we will do anything to have it that is the meaning of the quote. But the question is there are things which are not meant for you. We do not always succeed there is always a failure besides us. The positive side is, if there are things we want in life we have to do our very best to have it, but if things did not happen now we have to keep on trying because there is always a right time for us. We alwasy have a choice.Make the most out of life.
